Among the passengers from Honolulu te San Francisce by the last steamer was Majer G. "W. MacFarlaue, aide-de-camp and bearer of despatches te King Kala kana. His mission has excited some inquiry. Frem a number of the most prominent planters and mer chants from the islands it is learned that the king was at eue time induced by Cicsar Celse Morene te enter into arrange ments by which the Chinese merchants' line of steamers were te land a million of Chinamen of the islands, en which a capi capi tarien tax of $7 each was te be levied. They were then te be made citizens and the kingdom turned ever te the Chi nese empire for this consideration. The scheme was balked by the action of for eign residents aud officials, Chagrined at the issue and his resulting unpopularity, the king went oil en a tour of the world. It was supposed that the arrival of Mae Mae Farlanehad some connection with this scheme, but Claus Sprcckles, a leading planter of the islands and & merchant of San Francisce says that his mission is te officially announce the death of Chief Jus tice Harris and ether news of importance. Mr. Wm.N. Armstrong, the Hawaiian minister of state accompanying King Kalakaua, says that the rumor published in the United States regarding tbe pro posed sale of the Hawaiian Islands te Eng land or France is frivolous and utterly false; that the king is traveling for pleasure only, and has no po litical purpose whatever ; that if he bad any such purpose, it would rather be te obtain the guarantee of these countries for the absolute independence of the islands ; that England and France de net wish te acquire the islands, and that the United States wish only te see them independent.
