Next Friday, tbe 15tU of July, will be St Swithin's Day, abent which there wan adage that if it rains or is fair upon that day there will be a continuous track of wet or dry weather for the forty days ensuing. " St. Swithin's Day, If lueu dost rain. Fer forty days it win reuuuu -, st swithin's Day, if thou ec fair, Ker forty dayawUl rain nae malr." St. Swithin was Bishop of Winchester 111 802 and was noted for his uprightness and humility. Se far did he carry the latter quality that en his death bed he requested te be buried, net within the church, but outside in the church yard, where his grave might receive the caves-dreppiuKS from the reef and be trodden by the leet ei tne passere-ey. His lowly request was complied with and in this neglected spot his remains reposed for a huudred years, when a fit of indigna tion seized the clergy that the body of se pious a member of their order being al lowed te occupy such a position. Accord ingly en a certain fifteenth day of July they all assembled te convey St. Swithin's body with great pomp into the adjoining cathedral of Winchester. When they were about te commence tbe ceremony a heavy rain bunt forth, and continued without intermission for the forty suc ceeding days. The monks interpreted this tempest as a warning from heaven of the impious nature of their Attempt te contravene the directions of St. Swithin, and instead of disturbing his remains they erected a chapel ever them, at which many astounding miracles arc said te have been performed. Frem this circumstance arose the popular belief of the prophetic character of the weather en St. Swithin's day. TheSadMery Told liy a y'S &. A sad liltle precession silently wended its way yesterday from within the sembre walls of the Eastern penitentiary bearing a coffin containing the remains of a 17-ycar-eld lad, who died of consumption en Saturday after having completed half of a two years' scntence for larceny. At the time of the boy's arrest be gave an as sumed name, and retained his incognito until the latter mrt of last week, when he .felt the hand of death laid upon him. It. was then that he called one of the kcecrs te his bedside, and, aftcr giving his right name, stated that he was an orphan and came from the Seuth, where his relations, who are people of geed connection, resided. He had come the city te make a living, and obtained employment en an ice cait, but hard weik seen told en his frail con cen con stitutien, and at last he had te cease labor ing. But two alternatives remained for him, one of which was te go te the alms alms heusc, and the ether te prison. 1 le prcfei red the life of a convict te that of a pauper, and he stele a set of harness, ler which he was sentenced te two years' imprisonment.
