LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 1881. w .ancaster intelligencer. FRIDAY EVENING, JUNE 24. 1861. 1'laBtfBg for the Petate Bng. Country Gentleman. Wbcn a farmer plants a large field of potatoes his neighbors are apt te rally mm en his care in " providing for the bugs. But in some cases this should be profusely done. In every field of early planted po tatoes a few rows of some late growing variety should be planted en which the bu"s can concentrate after the early vines have died. It docs net need many. The fewer the better, provided they are scat .ri enr.iifh. These late hills should be visited twice a day at least for a week or mere. In this way a friend ofmine last year destroyed literally millions of the bu"-s from his own and neighbor's fields. Panning these late hills is preferable te usiug Paris green, as many of the old beetles would net cat, and would thus es cape. A few hills of Peerless planted as late as July 1 would be green until killed by frost, might ripen some potatoes. IS'cre wished tbat all Reme had only one neck that he might mere easily destroy it. Se far as possible the potato bug should be mmwntratMl and destreved late in the season te lessen their numbers the coming year. That the old beetles will Uy is un questionable, but they rarely or never fly far at a time, and if the farmer destroys the bugs en his own land he need borrow no trouble about visits fiem these of his ncijj ilibers. Fertilizers In Pennsylvania. The chemist of the tate beard of agri culture has been busily at work analyzing the various kinds of fertilizers offered for sale in Pennsylvania, in accordance with the law en the subject. In addition te these already announced, the secretary of the slate beard publishes the result of fifty eight ether analyses, making the entire number thus far submitted te this test one hundred and twenty-one. Out of the last h-itpli niiMivzcd. enlv seventeen out of the l(Yv.fi.rlit. were found te be worth the money asked for them. One kiud was found which is sold at !Jl-, te be worth only ether sample, sold 85.71. Most of the $2.03 ; and an- at 14 was worth kinds fell far below what their be worth. manufacturers claim them te These facts cxplaiu why the results from the use of fertilizers nave been disappointing and unsatisfactory te farmers. Many arc geed, worth all that is asked for them, but far the largest num ber are deceptive, and the farmer who buys them is cheated. Secretary Edge, who was se active in having the present law providing for the analyzatien of all the artificial fertilizers offered for sale in the state passed, deserves much credit for having this shield thrown around the ag ricultural community. If a fanner is new deceived and cheated in the purchase of artificial manure, he lias only himself te blame. Twe or u Kiud. A hheucr et Toads. Ki'llilclicniTimc-i. After a heavy shower of rain last week the railroad Crack of the Lehigh and Susque hanna division, from the depot te the Bethlehem junction, was literally covered with little " hop toads," about the size of a common beau. Andrew Beylau, llag mau at the railroad crossing opposite the cana! bridge, first noticed the phenomenon after the shower of rain, aud the attention of many persons while passing there dur ing the day was directed te the strange sight. A number of the little toads could htill he seen en Saturday morning hopping around the railroad track. The question new is, where did the toads, come from ? Did they come from dewu up or from up down ? A Sliewcr of lizards. San Jese (Cat.) Merald. During the late storms a strange thing happened out in the Willows. The trees en the lauds of Norris Plumnicr and Mr. Arthur were covered with lizards, aud some were also found ledged in the branches and stuck en the ends of the lately cut limbs of the trees. The lizards varied from two te four inches in length. As te hew they came there no one can positively tell, but it is the opinion of these who saw them that they must have rained down. This leeks a little like a ca nard, but Mr. Plumnicr and II. L. Dart arc ready te vouch for the truthfulness of the statement. We have heard of angle worms and toads falling during a thunder storm, but this is the first instance of a Miewer of lizards.
