At last evening's meeting of council the finance coumittee report showed tbe re ceipts, including a balance of $987.05 te be $13,554.28 and the expenditures te be $12,401.03, leaving a balauce of $1,090.25. The lire committee reported their action at Reading in relation te the repairs of the Columbia engine, which has been shipped, te the Spawn & Dennisseu manufacturing company, and that a machine for oiling hose had been examined, and the commit tee recommended that one of these ma chines be purchased for the use of the Co lumbia fire department. The gas and water committee reported that with a few exceptions the water plugs and lamps were in getwl condition. The exceptions were etdcred te be attended te. The sanitary committee reported having had two thou sand notices printed calling attention te section 3 of the erd inance relating te health, pissed May !), 18GC, and having a copy placed in each house in Columbia. They further reported complaints of an offensive .smell issuing from the tannery at Fourth and Mill streets, aud a number of gutters as Ijcing in bad repair. He asked that council take action looking te the street's improvement. Papers relative te the duties of the several standing committees were read by the secretary, and adopted and eidcrcd te be placed upon the minute book for lercrcuce by members of the commit, tees. Upen the question of floating the borough debt at a reduced rate of interest "pre gicss" was reported by the finance com mittee. The secretary was instructed te furnish cachScommittce with a book for its miiiutcs and with instructions in its duties. Permission was irrautcd J. Milten Mishlcr te erect a hitching pest in front of 1 ins residence, i e tlic paving committee was referred the restricting the moving en the pavements of trucks, push-carts, etc. It was adopted that the boieugh tax be collected under the same rules and pre- isleus ax last year. Proposals were read for the collection of the borough tax from Thetnam B. Dunbar at three per centum and Dr. S. Atlce Iieckius at four per centum. A call of the roll resulted in the election of Dr. Beckius. The question of I'entiuuing in the service of the borough the special policemen who have been doing duty for the past few weeks was referred te the police committee in conjunction with the chief burgess. The chief burgess was instructed te commis sion Messrs Michael Dysingcr and Henry Itedcuhauscr as special policemen. It was resolved that au abatement of five pjr cent, be made en all taxes iaid en or before July 10, and four per cent, en all taxes paid en or before August 10. A communication was read from the sccrc tary of the school beard returning the thanks of the be vrd te council for the use of council chamber at the holding of the meeting of the beard. A report reaches us that Harry Cockley, a seu of thej late David Cockley, of this city, died in Detroit, Michigan, several weeks age. He left Lancaster long age, and pursued a successful business in tbe West unt il recently. He was a very genial and attractive companion and was much esteemed by liis Lancaster aenuautauccs. Rebert Robinson, of this city, will leave for Detroit, Michigan, en Tuesday next te attend te some important business interests that will detain him there for two months or mere. G. W. Brown, undertaker, has completed the removal of the dead bodies of the Don Den nelly family from the old St. Mary's ceme tery in West Vine street te the new ceme tery en the New Helland turnpike. The bodies of the father and mother of David Dennelly, together with these of hirasef, his wife and son. were among these removed. David Dennelly was a prominent and in fluential citizen in his day, and was the origiuater of the project for tbe establish ment of St. Mary orphan school, seen te be built en the site where his bones have se long lain hurried. Twe tramps supposed te belong te the gang arrested en Thursday night were captured by Andy Flick and held for a hearing by Alderman A. F. Dennelly. Mrs. Dr. Thes. Geedman, the grand jury of Clearfield comity has found a true bill aud his trial has been continued te the September session. It will be re membered that Evans and a woman visited Geedman in jail, quarreled with bim and inflicted fatal injuries. Evans is well known iu Lancaster where he formerly lived and whence he fled under suspicion of being concerned in robbing Fritchcy's jewelry store. Couldn't Ituy. Iliintiiiixdeu Monitor. The prisoners, McKennet aud Roberts, who attempted te blew up the Liverpool hall, have been formally remanded. They were examined this afternoon ou the charge xt damaging a buildiug with intent te murder and with laying an explosion te damage a building. The man who at first gave the name of Roberts has since his arrest given it as McGrath. A strong ferce of police was present at tbe examination. Only persons having business were admitted te the court room. Twe wooden buildings of the Laurel Dale factory, at Ashaway, in Hopkinton township, R. I., were burned last night. The less is estimated at $13,000 ; partially insured. Daniel Merau and Hcury Leusberser, two of the men scalded by the explosion at Atkins's niHJ, Pettsville, yesterday, died early this morning.
