Fer tbe Week Ending Saturday, May 14. U. S. Tobacco Journal. There was very little stir iu our market this week. The extraordinary heat and the absence of transient and city buyers caused the quietness. In '80 tobacco noth ing was done. Connecticut seconds of that crep.wcrc luekad for by jobbers, but the few parcels that holders showed will ingness te sell were held at from 11 te 11 J cents. The price being thought tee high prevented their sale. The feelinjr of packers of all kinds of '80 tobacco is quite dilfurcnt from that which they evinced re garding' the '79 crop. There exist no screwed-up expectations of getting im mense Ggurcs, nor arc there any fears of great losses. As a whole, the '80 crops vserc bought with mere consideration and judgment than the '79, and with the sta bility of business in general the '80 in vestment will pievc protitable if nothing unforeseen occurs te effect a change in it. Of all the holders of '80 crops, these who held the Pennsylvania feci most secure. They arc perfectly at case, claiming that even if it ferments unsatisfactorily, the texture of the tobacco is sucli as te enable it te stand even a violent artificial sweat ing. The stock of '79 tobacco en hand in this market is deci casing daily, and especially of yielding wrappers, geed or bad, quite a scarcity exists already. The much neg lected '79 Connecticut has come into slight prominence this week by a sale of about U50 cases of wiappcrs at about 22 te 2 cents. Outside of this we note sales of about :.j0. cases of '79 Pennsylvania, at previous figures, and several small lets of '79 Ohie, probably aggregating 200 eases, at an average of 10 cents. Havana Market lemains active. The demand ler geed '79 and '80 is as strong as dining the previous week. The uncer tainty regarding the "81 crop is the cause. Prices firmer. Less llitvauu Used. While the manufacture of cigars in the United States has increased enormously, the consumption of Havana tobacco, as compared with the number of cigars made, has fallen oil greatly. Since 1877 then; has been au increase iu cigar production amounting te .i00,000,000. In 1871 there were imported te this country 8,394,980 rounds of leaf ami 9,7"9,3.w pounds in 18S0 only 1,340 375 pounds mere than iu the first named year, which shows conclusively that the importation of Havana tobacco has net kept pace with the manufacture of cigars. Ke-Sueating Tobacco. Tobacco 1 e if. During the past few mouths suits have been brought iu our state courts for in fringement by several patentees of the processes of re-swealing leaf tobacco, and one of these suits has been decided iu a We -tern city. Other suits have recently been commenced against parlies who arc making use of processes for rc-swcating leal tobacco, and as nearly everybody con nectfd with the manufacture of cigars or the selling of leaf tobacco, is compelled by the custom of the times te resweat in some form or ether, it is vitally essential that these interested should ascertain what arc their rights under the law at the earliest-possible moment. Delay may in volve them iu court expenses and dam ages. There have been se many patents taken out during the past fifteen years for re sweating tobacco that it is a nice question te determine what is an infringement and what is common property, ami it is time this matter were definitely settled. Te aid in reaching a solution of the problem pre sented, a mcctingi.s te be held in this city, en Wednesday evening, May 18. There should be a full attendance. Tlie PtiilailelpliU Market. The only difliculty dealers have new is te obtain prime old stock for wrappers ; the cry for such goods is daily, ami the fortunate hehleis have tbe satisfaction of realizing a handsome profit. What cigar dealers aie. te de after awhile, is difficult te solve. Nearly all our first-class houses are busy buying and packing iii Lancaster.
