LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER WEDNESDAY MAY 11, 1881? adapted te the best interests and complete happiness of humanity. Sin is mere than a violation of the law. The offender against law encounters measurable punishment, but he who wages war upon government is held for treason and te capital penalty. Sin is treason against the law of Ged. It is the sinners flinging his "I will net," against his Maker's "tiieushalt." The sinner tears down the pillars of his Master's throne. The perfection of the law involves the certaintj of retribution. The lawgiver is able te save and destroy. He will held an assize. Without retribution thcre could be no law, as the civil statue is invalid which does net prescribe penalty. This retributieu must be end'ess, or the Jaw would be only re medial. Then if en the one haud there is the siuful and guilty man and en the ether the righteous aud inflexible law, the media, tieu of them, te.man'.s salvation, can only be in the Christian scheme of redemption, which admits all the truth of man's lest state and asserts the inflexibility of the law, while it holds te the mercy of Ged en the ether hand. Te deny the one, how ever, is te deny the ether ; and the yicw of Christianity which presents only the mercy of Ged aud net his righteousness, drags it down te the level of Mohamme danism. The sermon was attentively listened te, and its crisp aud logical argument, of which we cau present only a naked out line, was much commended. TIRED OF LIFE. lulin Miclufuss, of this City, Hang lliuiscl in urownaleivn. Jehn Shcinfuss, of this city, committed suicide by hanging himself in a shed at tached te the hotel of Jacob Bear, in Hrownstewn, West Earl township, yester day afternoon. Shcinfuss was a German and was about 55 years of age. He has been in this country almost seven years. During that time he lived in this county. He worked in the neighborhood of New Helland at times and would often go aieund the country peddling goods. About a year age the wife of Shcinfuss aud four or five children came te this country and they went te house keeping. The family new resides en La fayette street in the Eighth ward. The deceased has purchased goods from Chris tian SehacHer, greecrymau, at Water and West King streets, for four or five years past. Ou Saturday he went te Mr. Schacl f'cr's store and bought about $25 worth of goods te bell, besides some things for his house. He started te the country en Mon day and arrived at Urowustewn in the afternoon. He remained around the hotel during the day aud seemed very much de pressed in spirit. He spent the uight there aud yesterday morning after eating breakfast he started away, but leturncd in a short time. Hd sat around the hotel but spoke very little te anyone ami seem cd te be low spirited. Seme time during the afternoon he said he was going aw:iy for a short distance but would sliertly return. lie was net again seen alive. At. 5 o'clock some one around the hotel had occasion te go te the shed near the barn, aud there they found the lifeless body of Shcinfuss. lie had taken a small rope, one end of which he had tied te a hole in the feed trough, aud the ether he placed around his neck. He then let himself fall and in that way choked te death. AVheu found his feet were ou the ground aud his knees almost touching. After the body had been found Deputy CorenerS. W. Wanner was netilicd. He cmpanncllcd a jurv, consisting of U. It. Shadier, G. AV. Kafrelh, T. L. Cox, Daniel C. Brown. AV. C. Bear and Jehn B. Brown, aud they found that the man came te his death by hanging himself. The body was brought te this city by the deputy coroner aud a son of the hotel proprietor. AVerd was sent te Mr. Ciiristian Shacfl'er, who, from the descrip tion of the man and from papers found en him, was able at ence te identify him. This morning the body was taken te the home of the deceased en Lafayette street. Persons who knew Shcinfuss say that he was an upright, industrious and honest man, aud they can give no reason for his having taken his life. VIOIITINK FOH A I1USUANU. Wife Number One Taking Her Ituvciigc Upeu Wife Number Twe. In Lebanon en Monday uight the Far mer's hotel was the scene of a lively scrimmage between two women, both of whom claimed te be the wife of a certain individual from Lancaster county, who arrived there two weeks age and Stepped at the above hotel. The lady who accompanied the man in ques tion was his junior by about thirty years. He is about fifty. His story was that his wife died several years since and the young lady had been an inmate of the house and a personal friend of his deceased wife. He married her en account of her winning ways. They seemed te enjoy their honey moon and matters passed along smoothly until Monday evening, when wife number one arrived en the scene, accompanied by a sister of the truant husband, for such he proved te be, having deserted his first wife, after taking about 500 of her money. The man and wife number two had but just arrived at the hotel after hav ing taken a carriage ride. Their reception was of a lively nature. The woman who had been deserted spraug en the young woman with the fury of a tigress, scratch ing and pounding her in a terrible manner until she was compelled te beat a retreat from the place, and she is still missing. The man had made arrangements te go into the livery business and for this pur pose had pui chased a let of horses from prominent citizens. The ai rival of wife number eue and the story she tekF of his doings had the effect of putting a quietus en the arrangement. IMierccs Made Easy. There don't seem te be much necessity for parties desiring divorces te go te Chi cago or ether prominent divorce centres in the AVest. Berks county is much nearer home, and a costly trip is avoided. Last year lifty-nine divorces were granted in that county, aud the business of the courts was far from being pushed te its utmost capacity. Xcic Era. Sweep before your own deer, neighbor ! Divorces are suspiciously numerous and easily secured in our own local court. In two recent cases, the particulars of which appeared iu the Intki.ligexcei:, libellants came te Lancaster from neighboring coun ties with very llimsy cases for divorces and get them, as they probably would ret have done in the courts of their own coun ties. Our judges need te scrutinize the testimony a little closer or their court will seen become a " divorce centre." A Aluulcipal Spread. The financial clicst of the borough of Hummclstewn is evidently in a salubrious condition. Frem the minutes of the pro ceedings in its municipal council last week the following is extracted : "Dr. W. C. Baker moved, aud Frank L. Hummel seconded his motion, that the chief burgess, town council, high consta ble, supervisor, collector of borough taxes, and town clerk, have an oyster sap per en the evening of the 12lh of May at the expense of the borough, and that au order be drawn upeu the treasurer amount ing te thirteen dollars te pay the same." Need Repairs. The Chester county coramissieucxs have written te the commissioners of Lancaster county, stating that the inter-county biidge at Pine Greve forge is in a danger ous condition. The skewback en the Chester county side needs repair and the ends of the arches and bridge have sunk about ten inches.
