LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER,. SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 1881 COLUMBIA NEWS. UUB REGULAR CORRESPONDENCE . The raft channel, near the ''Black Beck " at Turkey Hill, is still closed by the rock which is spoken of in auether articic, and as a consequence of this a de tention te running has neeessarily oc curred. This morning's market is said te have bren very geed. The employees of the Susquehanna roll ing mill were paid a off this morning for two weeks' work. The Ladies' aid society of the E. E. Lutheran church gave a sociable in the church lecture room last evening, which was much of a success. The attendance was large and a geed bit of money was taken in. Rev. A. II. Leng, of Marietta, will preach special sermons in the Church of Ged te-morrow morning and evening. A new express wagon for the B. & O., D. L. & W., and P. & R. railroad compa nies has just been put in service in Colum bia. The pocket book ceutaiuing $17, of which we spoke yesterday as being lest, belonged te J. II. Leng and net te J. S. Snyder as we inadvertently stated. ltev. Samuel Yingling, president of Ilar risburg conference of the Lutheran church, will preach for St. Jehn's Lutheran con gregation in Shulcr's hall, en Sunday morning at ten o'clock, and in St. Paul's German Lutheran church, Locust street, below Sixth, in the evening at 7:30 o'clock. There were two sections te the way passenger train west this morning. Beth were heavily leaded with emigrants for the far West. Forepaugh's advertising car passed through en the second section. A KaR Wreck. Yesterday morning Pilet Harry Stiple left here with a raft en which a party of timbcrmen with their wives and friends from Biughatnten, N. Y., Clearlle'd county, Pa., and ether places had taken passage. Closely following Siple's rait were four ethers piloted by Messrs. Sam uel Will and Warren Brown, of Washing ton borough, and Benjamin Ohmit and Samuel Stever, of Marietta, in the order named. With the first raft, except te note that it get through all right, this article has nothing te de, but with the four ethers it has. A Columbia gentle man who was making"a trip with Pilet Ohmit gave te us what we bciew give te our readers : Wheu Will's raft the first of the fe ur with which we are dealing reached Tur key Hill it was found that a binder had broken and the raft become unmanageable. Just below the "Black Keck," where the current is &tretig and the water is swift the front end et the (spar) rait caught en a small island and htuck fast, the ether cud swinging around until its broadside was turned te tlie channel, wuen it, tee, stuck. Brown's rait was but a little way behind, and in a moment it piled into the first one, scattering the sticks of timber in all directions but leaping upon and ever the portion which is still half fast, and making the barrier mere potent than ever. While all this was going en raft Ne. 3, was bearing down upon the wreck ahead, as yet unaware of the danger in front, but with no possibility of aveitin it even had it been known. There was another collision, another breaking up of timber and another leap ever, when things once mere became quiet, but only for au instant, for in nnother memeat the raft piloted by Stever bbewed itself coming around the curve, but a little way up, and it was known that another smash-up was incvit able. Our informant says that at this time he felt thcie were safer places in the world than just where he steed, but the difficulty was in reaching them. While he was thinking thus the fourth raft crashed into the wicclc of the ether three with terrible force, and playing havoc with the neatly bound timbers. The lashings were broken and the pieces of weed thrown about in all conceivable shapes and forms, some escaping and going en down the river, but most of them clinging te the wreck or te rocks near by. Seme one en shore, noticing the state of affairs, had sufficient presence of mind te run and meet approaching rafts and signal te them before they were drawn into the vertex, and this was the only preventive of a still mere indiscriminate scattcratien of incongruous parts of several wholes. What the less will be we are net able te figure out, but will net be inconsiderable The excursionists, tefwhem we before re ferred, were fortunate in being en the first raft. COURT. What was Dene tins Morning. Court met this morning at 10 o'clock for the purpose of hearing license cases.
