ESSSSgssseaKasajasBssfiB 5522953HHESSH! saMaeweaea LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCEK, MONDAY, MARCH 14. 1881. Lancaster IntcHijjencer. MONDAY EVENING, MAB. 14, 1881. The Tebacce Market. Seed Leaf and Havana for the Week Ending Marcb 1, lO a. m, Market dulL With-tlie exception of a sale of 1,000 cases of '79 Ohie, nothing really noteworthy occurred. Prices for all '79 stocks have net advanced any daring the past week, nor did they decline. These having useful stocks en band de net make any effort te attract buyers, as it will be many months before the '80 crop becomes a competing article. Furthermore, the total amount of '79 goods en hand has been growing smaller of late, and though jobbers in the country and large manu facturers here during the past few months supplied themselves largely, the greater portion of the middle class manufacturers have, as usual, no great surplus of leaf en hand and consequently will continue te buy whether leaf is cheap or dear. The opinions regarding the '80 crop arc still tee varied te affect anybody or any thing. Packers in Pennsylvania have become very lively, as will be seen from reports in ether columns. All statistics and calculations regarding the amount of seed leaf tobacco raised in this country having proved fallacious, any ar gument why the '80 crop should or should net be bought at the figures that have been and are being paid, would be out of place. Se, therefore, let these who wish te invest their money in the '80 crop, de se peacablv. Their profit does net se much Tie in the geed or bad qualities of the crop. It lies in the quantity raised. The result of the '79 crop showed that the prices paid by jobbers and manufacturers were net in accordance with the quality or yield of the tobacco (wrappers especially), they were in accordance with the quantity raised. There was net, apparently, such a quantity of '79 'tobacco raised as was re pcrtcd by the agricultural bureau at Washington. And should the estimated amount of seed leaf raised in 1880 be as incorrect as that of 1879, the investments in the '80 crop will prove profitable. If a hlanufactuivr can't cct tobacco without holes, he will take that which has them. . Sales of the week : Ohie Crep '79 : 1,000 cases running ; reported at 9 te 11 cents. Pennsylvania Crep '79: COO cases; fine running, cents ; medium, 18 cents ; fillers, 8 cents. Connecticut Crep '79: e00cas.es, mostly wrappers, 25 te 40 cents. Crep '79 : CO cases seconds, 14 cents. Havana Market active. Sales 700 bales, of which 200 were of the '80 Reme dies crop; price 90 cents (reported by broker). '79 sleck continues in geed de mand at previous figures. A Fraud Exposed. A brand new swindle en a grand scale, has been going en in this city, which, thanks te the vigilance of a reporter for the U. S. Tobacco Journal, will new prove net very hurtful cither te the Havana to bacco tratle of this country, te the reputa tion of tobacco grown in Cuba, or te the manufacturers of cigars there. Of late it has doubtless been noticed by readers of this paper that the sales of Wis consin and Pennsylvania fillers, as report ed in these columns, have been unusually large. Iu face of this, however, manufac turers of cigars have been buying very lit tle seed fillers in the market, a great many even dispesiug of the .fillers contained in running lets of leaf which they had pur chased. Therefore, the rapid disappear ance of fillers from the market has been the talk of the trade, no one being able te designate the real outlet for this stock. We are enabled new te give an explana tion, and one that will, no doubt, cause astonishment and surprise iu all tobacco circles. The fillers referred te were and arc being shipped te the Island of Perte Itice, which is net a great distance from Cuba, both being in the same group. The te bacce has been and is new being put up in carrots like Havana tobacco, packed iu bales just like Havana bales, and the steamers of the Atlas mail line, plying be tween this pert and Perte Itice, are carry ing these bales te the latter pert. Frem there they are smuggled into Havana, aud resold there as genuine Havana tobacco. Gang's Repert. Sales of seed leaf tobacco, reported by J. S. Gang's Seu & Ce., tobacco brokers, Nes. 84 and 80 Wall street, New Yerk, for the week ending March 14, 1881 : 123C cases 1879 Pennsylvania, fillers, Cc. ; asserted, 1222c.; 200 1879 New England, wrappers, 1 0:j0c. ; 1,234 cases is 1 9 Ohie, !13c. ; 100 cases sundries, i)(a)18c.
