Ivy., Pec. 10, 18S0. R. K. MeiitKjhmi, J'Jhj : DmvkSik: Your letter of Dee. G, le ceiveil. Ker .some jeai.s past I have, been impressed from ai tides in the agricultural papers that, there w.i; seuiu virtue in sow sew ing halt en grreivi!!:; wheat, especially as a picvciilivu of i ust in a wet season and te btilli'n the stiaw in strong laud, se about the 1st of Apiil, 1871), I sewed ou seven acres of veiy .stieu land in rank white wheal (silver chief variety), at the rate of 175 1 s. of refuse of pirlc house salt, piir acre, the result was very satisfactory as the rain was clear of uist and steed up well, tli-.' whole field of '.VI acres making a yield of 1'H bushels per aero, but as all the lield was turcslied together, I could net tell the diHereiicu in yield, where sewn with salt, and where net. Last summer, 1830, our whea was full of lly, some, el it .seemingly almost ruined, and I aaiu sewed the same ratio of salt en my crop of eighty acres, and the re sult was ajiain cjuile satisfactory. I sewed breidcast about A (nil 1st ; in a dry time is piefeiable. I think the salt inter fered very mateiial'y with the lly in its ravages, and in a vci y dry f-easen is beuc licial in ictuiiiiug; ilie moisture. I think it the most ci-ntia! in ;; season following an open wiiiii'i, when the wheat lias a rank nm th. My salt ee.st te; t'ds pist season $45, and I think th ii at a moderate estimate it was weith $."i00 tn me. It is cl. timed by many per.-en.s that salt is a line feililizer, and will veiy liiiieh increase the yielu of wheat in any season, but of this I am net pit; pa led te say. lul am fully satisfied that .salt is a fine ptcvcnlive of nist, slill'cu injj iii of the straw and crystallizing the jjrain, and is net at all relished by any insect. I iai.se haidy, llinty, white wheat altogether, and have been quite suc cessful for several years p st, growing only en the best el laud. Yours linlv, W. T.' HKAitNi:. Glkntei:, Minn. December 18. ISSQ II. K. Menac.han. Ksq., West Chester, Pa: Yeiii.s asking my expeiience with salt, en wheat Kind received. My experience with salt is confined te one tiial during the past season with one bushel of common Michigan salt sewn ou 1 acicsef old land, alter the wheat was sewn and hai rowed in tiie .spring. Wheat Bewncailyiu Apiil. In a b'0-acre field. one aete was u.i:e fully me.isiucd and threshed by itelf. where the salt was net gown, and it pieduced 31 bushels machine mcastuc, and wemhiti; out ob tutshels, while the average yield was 21 bushels. The wheat pieduced en salted laud test ed US pound as it came fiem the machine while no ether part of the field tested ever 57 pounds. 1 lie st a son was rat Iter wet and I did net auticipite se favorable a result as though it had been dry. Iain se pleased with the result th.it 1 shall try te salt my whole Held, at the rate of J of a barrel, or about 200 pounds te the acie. I made my experience from information obtained from Wisconsin farmers, who claim thai salt will incicase yield eight bushels per acre. The best of my wheat being one pound .en the bushel mere than that produced from any pait of the field, convinces me that the salt is a very necessary ingre dient te our laud in wheat raising. I also find that harrowing the land after the wheat is up several inches docs it much geed. Any further information I can ren der you of interest will be cheerfully given. Yours very truly, A. H.
