agsaw LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1881. icastcc i-ntelitgencer. j' "VtW. TUESDAY EVENING, FEB. 8, 1881. Popular Hayings Abent Doffs. The Queen. An Eufrlisninari says, "If you cannot bits, never show your teeth," or "don't bark if you can't bite," while the Scotch say, " great barkens are nae biters." We also say, " what, keep a deg and bark my self?" These need no explanation, and the same is true te ethers, sueh as "any stick will de te beat a deg," " give a deg a bad name, and hang him," "it is easy te find a stick, te beat a deg," and " when a deg is drowning every one offers him drink." On the same principle of giving te these who de net want, we are told that every one bastes the fat deg, while the lean one burns. Of course, a hungry deg will cat dirty pudding. It is a bad deg that deserves no crust, and, "it is useless te tie up a deg with a chittcrliug." The French language is sinmiiarly pro lific in sayings about dogs. A geed deg never barks amiss, but net every deg bites that barks. The best of friends must part as Uegabert said te his dogs. This is well known, and se is this : He is like the deg of Jean de Nivelle, which runs away when it is called. A deg may leek at a bishop, is like our own, "A cat may leek at a king." Te beat t he deg when the lien is present may be sale, but is rather cow ardly. Twe dogs te one bone are bad. lie who would drown his de;; calls it mad. Yeu must threw stones at the deg Which bites ; but flatter the deg till you get te the stone heap and de net make mil of the deg till you are out of the village, because a deg and a cock are always brave en their ea'ii dunghill. If he who takes a deg by the ears is bitten, it is no wens'r-r. - Love me, leve my deg, is advice recog nized in different countries : but it is French te call the chief man, a deg with a grand cellar. Mere curious is between deg and wolf, te denote a dim dawn in which objects can scarcely be distinguish ed. We could add several ethers from French sources ; but we wish te give a few examples from elsewhere, and mere particularly from the German. A German, like many mere, may be as hungry or as weary as a deg ; and when he labors under a delusion, sees a blue deg. Thai the dogs bice the hindmost, is as true as a stronger utterance known amenir ourselves. He is in a destitute condition who has net a deg te draw out of the even. De net blame the innocent. It rests net with tiie dogs hew many her.-es Miallriiu in the year. The Litre may run the fastest, but many dogs are the death of the hare. Nobody cates te own a deg which is everybody's companion. The Turks have a few geed sayings, enc of which is, "The deg harks and the cara van gees by ; mere noise is nothing." Anether is, that "The deg which is led out against his will catches no game." The Arabs, have observed that every deg baric s at his own gate, and that a deg whh-h runs is better than a lien which lies down. They think it a foolish thing te draw t fie deg's teeth and bark yourself; but having no great confidence in the animal, they say, "Pat a deg en the jaws tiil you can muzzle it." Frem the Chinese we learn that a deg which rais-cs its tail, despi es its fee ; also, that he wh beats a Ueg, Mieuld think of its master. Other rough-and-ready sayings el theirs arc, that "The deg in its kennel howls at the Heas, but the deg which is hunting docs net feel thvni ;"' and that, "It is net deg's Ileus which make the wits cry out." Nene of the ancient stories about dogs surpass one told by Bechait, who says that when he wrote a deg was living at Palis which had watched for almost three years at the grave of his master in the ccmelery of St. Innocent, and could net be persuaded te leave it. Once it was seized and taken te another part of the city, but as seen as it get its liberty it went back te the grave. This was in the year 1CG0. and during the winter the snow had been very deep and the cold most in tense. Heyhar! adds, that if any reader is anxious te knew hew such a deg lives, let him undei-stand thai the inhabitants, struck with the novelty of the thing, sup ply him abundantly with bread, which they send te the grave where he sits. Cured 1 IJrinki:i.
