In the fuither discharge of our duties, as instructed by your Honorable Court, the grand inquest visited the public institu tions of the county. In the Heme for Friendless Cfcildicn we found 94 inmates 71 boys and 23 girls of whom 3 of the boys and 2 of the gills arc colored. The building is in splendid condition, geed ventilation and inevc.y way well arranged. We found the childien in perfect health and well cared for under the efficient man agement of the matron, Mr.. Hannker, and we cnccrtuily recommend tlieappio tlieappie priating of 810,000 asked for, for the f-up-jlbrt of the institution. We next visited the Lancaster county almshouse, under the stewardship of Mr. Jehn Breck, and found thcreiu 210 in mates, of which number 147 were men, 50 women and 13 childien. They seemed te he well cared for, and te all appear ances contented and happy. We found the building clean and well ventilated throughout. We also visited the hospital, under the supervision of 3Ir. B. F. Cox. Theie are 214 inmates. The buildings are iu an ex cellent condition, clean and as comfortable as possibly cau be made for the arommo aremmo aromme dation of the unfortunate inmates In the county jail, under Capt. Jehn P. Weisc, we found xu prisoners, 10 1 con victs, 23 awaiting trial aud 85 for diuukeii and disorderly conduct. We found the prison generally in geed condition, aud the prisoners as well cared for as jrj-.dble under the crowded condition of the institu tion.
