Alteena Tribune. A rural friend who has paid some atten tion te the pomelogy of our country dis Bcnts from Mr. S. P. Eby's hypothesis in relation te the cause of the alleged dimi nution of rains and the deterioration of the apple product of this country, as briefly summed up in Monday's Tribune. Jeremiah-like, he seems te weep ever the fail ure of the apple crop and the water supply. Te this exception is taken and se far as the apple product gees it is vastly greater and better iu quality than that of forty years age. Hundreds of valuable sorts originated long after 1840. The expert of apples from the seaports te England and Europe is new equal te, if net mere than a thousand fold beyond, the production of forty years back. Splendid well-trained orchards are new in full bearing where none existed at that time, and varieties that the men of 1849 net only knew noth ing of and it would seemmre incapable of appreciating, if we judge of their attain ments by their wail against the present time, as behind the days of yore. If Mr. Eby would inspect some old say iifty or sixty years old orchard in this country, with trees hollow, full of brushy sheets, very late, and fruit utterly useless, and then inspect some recent orchards, yjclud ing new varieties and trees in "shape," he might take a step forward and conclude that the apple has net yet gene te the " demnitien bow wows," and that this beating children with the bones of their fathers was uet, te say the least, a sound, practical way te treat that valuable fruit. In reference te the water supply, if he is old enough te cci tify te events as far back as 1840, he may remember that in 1839, the Susquehanna river was almost as dry as a turnpike read, and then for a period of years much better fed by the mountain streams. Dees he uet remember that these extremes meve in cycles of years just as the extremes of cold and heat de, and the chopping away of some trees is wholly inadequate te produce the ef fect ? The cause el these cycles we de net pretend te give. We de believe that they exist and always have. The people that settle en our western prairies all dread dreughty summers, for with them come the locust. AH are fully impressed with the belief that as fast as the prairies are broken up and cultivation begins, they have mere summer showers and less dread of water famine. Every mau believes in this theory. New, the vex pepuli should decide against Mr. Eby's theory. He maintains that cutting down trees and cultivating the land diminishes the rainfall. Beth cannot be right. Apply the maxim above cited, and he must be in error. There is practical observation and admitted results against theory. Mr. Eby should take a mere hopeful and encouraging view, and help te iutrodiice ineie and mere geed plowing and skillfull agriculture, and mere new, geed ports of fruits, and by all means learn hew te make an orchard ex ceed the qualities of these of the days of yore. Foreign Fears and Apples. Gcrmantewn Telegraph. Net long since the German nomelogists undertook te discover by a system el vot ing, ouce popular in our country, but which, very properly, we think, lias lest favor of late years, what varieties were net the best but were most popular iu the various districts. Net one of the ap ples returned de we recognize among our popular kinds except the Red Astrachan, a Kussian variety, and this is given at the tail end of the list, with the remark that it does well in an occasional case. The Gelden winter Peaimain, one almost un known te our cultivators, is ser down as the best apple in twenty-two out of thirty four of these large districts, and such trashy things that is, trashy as we find them as Alexander. Rihsten Pippin and the various Rcincttcs, carry oft" the palm. New, in pears of all kinds named as their best are well-known te our cultiva tors, and although wc would net put them in the same order as resulted from this German inquiry, some American cultiva tors, it is net at all impossible, would make some such list. First and foremost they have the Beurrc Diel, which would have suited a laigc number of Americaus seme years age, before it took te shedding its leaves early in autumn before the fruit was quite ripe, alter which it never comes te its best flavor ; and before it took te cracking iu some few locations. The White Doyenne, however, had just as many votes as the Beurrc Diel, and this also our people would have agreed te years age. The Doyenne Gris. still a popular pear, comes next ; and then the Bcurre de Capiament, hich, though well known te many of our pear growers is scarcely pepul.ir, because its Haver is net equal te its wonderfully prolific diameter, though this very fact of its enormous bearing is probably the cause a cause which judicious thinning might remedy. Napeleon stands fifth ; but in this case Americans have nothing te say, for although it is remarkably healthy and productive and of fine quality if eaten a day or two after maturing, there are none left after a week or se is gene. The next one is Williams' Ben Chretien, or as we say, Bartlett ; and then comes Marie Louise, which like Napeleon ripens tee fast for us te make anything out of. Fi nally the two last en the list we find te be Beurre Clairgcau and Bcunc d Harden pent well known te Americans as excel lent pears in seme localities. Of course our order of excellence would be very different from this ; but still as compared with the apple, it is remarkable te find all well-known kinds te us and kinds which we find se often in our gar dens, te be the leading ones in the German lists. It would be interesting te knew hew our best American seedling pears de in Europe. The Scckel, the Tyson, the Shelden, the Braudywiuc, the Reading, the Lawrence and ethers would no doubt be as acceptable te them as their varieties are te us. Ge te H. B. Brandy as a Medicine The lollewing article was voluntarily sent te Mr. II. E. Slaymaker, Agent for Eeigart'e Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who has extensively used the Brandy referred te in his regular practice. It Is commended te the attention of these af flicted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine of great potency in the cure of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. Wit ha purely phUanthrepic motive we pre sent te the favorable notice et Invalids espe cially these afflicted with that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which b nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with feeble appetite and mere cr less debility, will find this simple medicine, when, nscd properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their ills and aches. Be it, hewcvei strictly understood that we prescribe and use but one article, and that Is REIGARTS OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young friend, II E SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as far as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preference ever all ether Brandies no matter with hew many Jaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of thn money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would aufilec te buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or cases. In proof of the curative semen ei Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon num bers of witnesses ene case in particular we cite: A hard-working farmer had been aiHlctcd with an exhaustive Dyspepsia for a number of years: ills stomach would reject almost everv kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new. Drenched at times, and in Lis discourses often declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te try Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked np with astonishment, but after hearintr et its wonderful effects in . I thftmflpanfhfimnnf hlanMlrfuvmuintiinpua liu t at last consented te foBew our advice. 'lie nsed tnc Brandy faithfully and steadily; the the second was taken he was a sound man. with a stomach capable of digesting anything which hcSchese te eat. He still kecDs it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since he has this medi cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene u. u me uecujr. . i'kacxibise jraveiCLAK. H. E.
