Hu" LANCASTM'i)ilttlikXl6yiciEt'iMbA? Elim5" Lancaster JntelUaencer. B FRIDAY EVENING, JUNE 11, 1880. Bnrdette en tbe Blackberry. Burlington Hawkcye. The greatest enemy the blackberry has is boys. Five boys from town can eat mere green blackberries in a day than would ripen in a -week. Fer many years the great desideratum has been a hardy berry that could resist the premature on slaught of boys from town. It is a great desideratum still. The Schneider,, a .vari ety that was invented by an Iowa horti culturist, is the nearest approach te it. It is bred from a perfectly green persimmon crossed with a dogwood tree, and still far ther propagated with a liyDna 01 worm wood bush and wild crabapple. It is net a perfect defence, but there are a very few boys who care te eat mere than a quart of them. Nobody else, however, can ue past the field where the Schneider is growing, without being attacked by Asiatic cholera, and this tends te weaken the partial suc cesss this hardy berry has achcived. Then there is a bug I de net knew the name of it that crawls ever the berries new and then. When you cat a berry that has been glorified by a visit from this bug, you lie down in the briars and pray Heaven te take you home in just about three seconds. And if you live you can wake up in the night, along in the middle of next wiutcr, and shudder as you taste of that berry. When your blackberries grew tee thick ly, you will want te thin them out. Te this end, you must kill some of them. This can be done by digging a well where the plant stands ; then turn the farm upside down and let it dry out thoroughly for a couple of years, then turn it ever, upside down, and start a brickyard en the back of it. This will kill oil- some of the plants. There may be some shorter and cheaper method of killing blackberry vines than this, but I have never heard of it, and it isn't likely that there is any. If you want te devote about forty acres of ground te the cultivation of blackber ries, plant about three healthy vines in some comer of the field, about the middle of April. Then about the first of May the man who owns the farm en the ether side the read will bring civil action against you, and try te collect damages for destruction of his two fields of wheat by a raid of blackberry vines. It is net known just at what season of the year blackberries ripen. The black berry Iras never been known te ripen. If the hucksters and boys should all die in June, it is probable that the berries would ripen some time in July or August. But they have never had a chance te see what they could de at ripeuiug. Snewdcu's Contempt. Washington (Pa.) Ueiew and Examiner Dem. The census enumerators get drunk and behaved in a diseiderly manner in Lancas ter en the day of the Republican primary elections there. They were arrested and the mayor sent them te jail for thuty days. They wei-e brought befer Judge Patteiseu en a writ etlicbcas corpus. (This is the same .judge who disbarred Steinman fc nensel for alleged contempt.) He decided that the commitment was legal and then dis charged them from custody se that they might be able te take the census ! They are net taring it .however. With praise worthy promptitude the census Supcrvi mii Mr. Snewdeu, dismissed them. And new we aic waiting whether Judge Patter son will rule the supervisor te answer for centempt: Lcitamly nothing ceuiu ee better expressive orcentempt for the judge's action than the summary removal of the enumerators for whom he opened the pris on deer.
