LOCAL AFFAIRS. Paper Mill.—There lias been considera ble talk in this county for several years about erecting a paper mill, and although there arc several most excellent sites in this neighborhood, those who had money and could have created a remunerative business, as well as benefitted a number of male and female employees, have again waited until other parties took the mat ter in hand. Workmen, we learn, are now (ngaged in putting upthe wallsofubuild ju<r designed for a paper mill, at Dull's mill, alwut two miles southeast of Mc- Vcvtown. We hope it will thrive. Death of J. W. Boody.— This gentleman, to whoso untiring industry most of the ore developments in the upper part of the county are owing, died quite suddenly near New ton Hamilton on Tuesdaj' even ing of last week, while engaged in laying off a tract of land he had sold to a 00111- punv of capitalists, on which it was de signed to test the gold and silver value of Mr. Boody's latest discovery. He was between do and -30 years of age, was a useful citizen, and had the perseverance of ten ordinary men. Counterfeit 50 Cont Note.—The most dangerous counterfeit of this denomina tion yet tr"t up appeared here on Monday last. As long as it is fresh and new it will be easily detected by those who are judges, but if once worn, it will be extremely dif ficult to determine the good from the bad. When compared with a genuine its defects —one eye on the face and the tine work on the ends on the back—arc apparent, but in other respects it is well calculated tn deceive nine out of ten. Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Cen tral Pennsylvania. This body held its 13th annual session in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewistovvn, com mencing on Thursday evening, June 6th, 1817, and ending Tuesday, June 11th. The retiring President, Rev. W. H. Div jen, preached the Synodieal Sermon to a full house, which was listened to with marked attention during its delivery. At 84 a. in., on Friday morning Synod was called to order; a quorum being present, the roll of ministers was called and creden tials of delegates presented and examined. The President read his annual report, af ter which an election was held for officers for the ensuing year, which resulted in the election of Rev. D. Kloss of New Berlin, as President; Rev. I.'M. Anspach of Mif tlinburg,Secretary; and Rev. J. A. Haek enberger of Bellefonte, Treasurer. The President delivered a neat and appropri ate address on taking the chair, thanking the Synod for the honor conferred. The ; regular business was then taken up arid dispatched with regularity and prompt ness. Arrangements were made to pur chase the Loysville Academy from the heirs of Col. John Tressler, for ail Orphan Asylum for the use of the Orphans be longing to the Synods of Pennsylvania in connection with the General Synod. Ap propriations of over three thousand dol lars were made lbr Missionary purposes, among which the sum of SISOO was voted for the use of the Mis-ion in Kansas City, which has been established there during the hist year by the Central Synod. There was excellent preaching every evening during the week in the Lutheran church, and on Saturday afternoon thepreparato rv sermon was preached by Rev. Antho ny from Mifflin, and the communion ser mon on Sabbath morning by Rev. Sheafer of R loom field, Perry county Pa. On Sab bath evening Rev. M. Officer preached to a large congregation, and on Monday evening the ordination sermon was de livered to a full house, by Father Sahm. Four candidates for license were set apart for the Ministry, and authorized to preach the gospel in its truth and purity, (in Sabbat 1 1 afternoon a grand gathering; oi the Sabbath Schools and people of the different churches took place in the Pros-, bytcrian church. The meeting was ably > addressed by Rev. Officer, Rev. Dr. Brown ; and Rev. W'illard ofthe Lutheran church, and Rev. Chenowith, on temperance, ofi the Methodist church. All the pulpitsof the town were occupied by Lutheran ministers oil Sabbath morning and cven- ing except the Episcopal and Catholic, i I he Mendelssohn favored the Synod with excellent music every evening, except ■Sabbath, and on Sabbath afternoon they conducted the music in the union meeting, j The attendance at Synod was nnpreee-' dentediy large, and the meetings were of great interest. The citizens ofali denom inations were exceedingly generous in j opening their houses and offering their; hospitalities to the members of Synod and visitors, for which they will he long! favorably remembered. M. Brennenian, the proprietress, together with a pair of prostitutes named Emma Wilson and .Ma ry llaines, and one or two young men who should have been elsewhere. The parties were taken before the Mayor, when a further hearing was had. Mrs. Bren ncmun was charged with keeping a baw dy house, for which offense she was held in SM)o bail to answer at court. Emma 1 Wilson and Mary H.tines were held in the sum of S2OO each. The Girard had become notorious as a bouse of ill-fame, an t the police deserve the thanks of the community for breaking up the den of vice. Sunday School Convention.— The seventh annual ounday School Convention, of the Juniata District, East Baltimore Confer ence, Methodist Episcopal Church, met at Bloody ltun, Bedford county, on Tues day, May 28th, ISO7. The Bev. Thomas Barn hart, Presiding Elder of the District, President; and Bev. J. I>. Stewartot by rone, and J. H. Ross of MeVeytown, Sec retaries. The number of Ministers in attendance was about twenty-five, and sixty representatives, and it was consid ered in many respects the best and most religious Convention as yet held in the !);-trict. Quite an interesting discussion arose in regard to policy and benefit of holding at some future time in this Dis trict, a Sunday School Institute. Rev. J. 11. Vincent finally consented to hold an Institute some time in the fall. Thechil drens' meeting, on Wednesday morning, was very interesting. Addresses were made by Rev. 1). S. Monroe, Rev. W. Gwynn, itev. It. E. Wilson, and Bev. J. P. Moore, aecompoiiied with singing bv scliool. Quite a number of interesting remarks were made on the Temperance question. The following resolution was offered and passed: R'nolved, That it is the duty of S. S. Officers and Teachers, to impress the principle of Temperam- upon the minds of the children committed to their care. Resolutions were offered and passed as follows: licsolvcd, That the best plan to raise missionary money, is the plan set forth in t lie Discipline, by organizing our schools into Missionary Societies. Resolved, That there should be, as far as practicable, a Normal class in connec tion with each of our schools, and all S. S. Superintendents and Teachers should be members of the same. Resolved, That we hold our next Sun day School Convention in Huntingdon, on the last Tuesday in May, 1808, at 1 o'clock, p. m., and to close on Wednesday night. Resolved, That the first Sabbath of Aug., 1.5..7, beset apart in all our churches, as a special day of thanksgiving ami prayer to Almighty God, for conversion of all tlie children in our Sabbath Schools. Several engineers and firemen, on the Penna. Railroad, were recently arrested at Altoona, at the instance of John H. Fritoliey and others, and carried before Esquire Leet, of Hollidaysnurg, charged with violating the law forbidding persons to follow worldly occupations on the Sab- Bath. At the hearing, on Saturday week, Hon. S. S. Blair appeared for the prose cutors and I). J Netf, Esq., lor the de fendants. Esquire Leet decided to im pose the penalty of the law in each ease. The defendants counsel appealed from the decision of the justice and the case will be heard at tlie argument court on tlie 18th of this month. Hugh Gillan, engineer of passenger train, on Ehensburg Branch, was knock ed down alid run over by a locomotive, while walking on the track, at Cress on station. His left arm was crushed at the elbow, and lie was considerably cut and bruised about, the head and face. Dr. Gemmiil was summoned to dress the wounds, and found that amputation of the arm was necessary. Tlie operation was performed, and the patient is now on a fair way to recover. The Young Men's Christian Associa tion, of Hollidayshurg, have established three I liion Sabbath .Schools in the coun try districts surrounding the town. The Cambria Iron Company have erect ed a line of telegraph running between their store room, woolen factory, brick works, and offices of the com pail v at Mill- Yiilo. The Juniata Sentinel recommends Da vid Wilson, of that county, as one of the Republican candidates for Senator from this district. A jour printer who gave his name us Paul Sadler, committed suicide near Blue Hill, Snvder county, last week, by taking a dose of strychnine. He had served iii Battery I, Jd V. S. Artillery. We think he had been in this place, as a jour an swering his description lately called at our office. The toj) of a buggy belonging to Adam Khowersof Middlehurg, w;is hurntth rough some careless cigar smokers. The extensive saw-mill and turning establishment owned by J. N. Vanortner, in West Perry township, Snyder county, was totally consumed by fire on Wednes day night a week. Loss $2,000. The dwelling house owned by Captain F. M. McKcehan, and occupied by Wrn. Snicigh; at the Juniata Furnace, Perry county, was consumed by fire a few weeks ago, together with the personal property in it, belonging to Mr. Srneigh. Adam Stabler, of Marysville, Perry county, was run over by a locomotive on .Sunday morning a week, and so severely injured that lie died the next day. Jus Morrison, of M ifllintown, while at tempting to hold a failing ladder at Ma rysville, so as to ease the fall of his jour neyman, iiad his hand caught between it and a picket fence, over which it fell, crushing the bones and causing great pain. Dr. J. C. Kalpdressed the wound, and thinks that with care there may be no necessity for ati amputation. Tiie Republicans of Indiana county held their primary election on Saturday a week. Capt. W. <Gordon and A. W. Kimnicli, Esq., were nominated for As sembly. Charles L. V. Haas, a flagman on the Shamokin division of the North Central Railroad, was instantly killed on Saturday a week in attempting to jump from the train. Lock Haven was thrown into a feverish excitement by the reported loss of a child named Myers. After a general hunt and all kinds of suppositions as to its fate, it was found in bed, soundly asleep. William T. Ralston, of Waterside, Bed ford county, died on Thursday evening, tin 2'M ol May, ultimo, at the residence of iiis sou, Robert Ralston, Esq., at the' advanced age of lug years and 8 months. The Johnstown Tribune says that dur ing a friendly scuffle on Thursday morn-' ing in the Rolling Mill, between several young men, one of them, named Leopold Haiser, was pushed against a revolving wheel and his head almost severed from his laxly. lie was nineteen years old, unmarried, and a resident of Coneniaugli borough. Horrible I A boy lately went to shoot a bird in the neighborhood of Carroltown, Cambria : county, but missed his a .in, and shot in stead a Catholic priest named M'Govern. Six shots were imbedded in the reverend gentleman's leg, and a painful though not serious wound was inflicted. The dwelling house of Win. P. Freliu, at Dublin Mills, Fulton county, was to tally destroyed by fire on Friday morn ing, May 31st. The fire originated from the stove pipe. A son of Mr. It. V. Glover, of Hartle ton. Union county, aged nine years, was almost instantly killed on the 30th May, by being thrown from u wagon while go ing down a hill. The Sheriff of Snyder county was called on some days ago to quell a disturbance at Port Tivverton, where some boatmen de manded higher rates for shipping coal and prevented others from loading at the old prices. The sheriff and his possee made some arrests, when the matter was com promised. Rev. J. M. Burnett has had a verdict of SOOOO against the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for injuries sustained. It ap pears he was in bis own carriage with his family, and while driving on a bridge o( '/• the railroad near St. Clair station, a train passed undo- it, causing his horses to run away. This verdict, it appears to us, is rather straining a point. A boy named Win. Melliu, lias been arrested at Greetisburg, Westmoreland county, for stoning passenger cars. Some boys here who are in the habit of throwing j stones at each other, or at houses, fences,! Ac., will probably some day learn that it is an unsafe pastime. The Lebanon Courier of Wednesday savs: a shocking accident occurred on Monday of last week in Heidleberg town ship, a few miles east of Shaettcrstown. A lad about 1+ years of age, the only son of Aaron Keller, was engaged on a neigh-: boring farm: while standing near the cat tle, one of the turn's gave chase to a strange dog which had evidently got too near her C.tif. The dog in his lliglit took refuge j b "hind vouug Keller and the cow rushing : on, caught the hoy on her horn. The! horn entered on the right hand side of the abdomen, near the liver, and passing up wards as far as the diaphram, made a fright ful wound, from the effects of which the Toy died before medical aid could reach him. He was a very bright and intelligent boy. j Peter Eby has got himself into the Sny der county jail for larceny. The house of Joseph Smith, of Dun can's Island, was robbed of overs2,oooon Saturday night a week. Dr. Thompson, Surgeon Dentist, has found it necessary to discontinue his prac tice at other points, the increased business requiring his constant attention at home.
