3 GAZETTE. LOCAX AFFAIRS APPOINTMENT. —Alex. M. Lloyd has been appointed by the Right Worship ful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge tf Penna., District Deputy Grand Master for the counties of Cambria, Blair, Huntingdon, Mifflin, Bedford and Fulton —the position having be come vacant by the death of John R. VYeekes, Esq. QUOTA. —The quota for this Congres sional District, under the late call for 300,000 men, is 2319. The quota for the different Sub-districts has not yet been established. As the enrollment will probably not exceed 8,000, the draft will take two out of four, and allowing for exemptions, one out of three will have to go. This makes a narrow chance, and if bounties are to be raised ought te induce a liberal sub scription. weather during the past week has been changeable. Friday last, rain and sleet; Saturday, a heavy snow storm ; Sunday, clear and cold; Monday, moderate, and yesterday rain again, making slush. This morning it is again cold and icy. Ice was taken off the Juniata on Monday. A short season of enjoy ment was afforded the skaters, but we suppose the rain has done away with both work and play. erA th ree-horse team, belonging j to Chas. Stratford, Sen., stopped on the railroad track where it crosses Main street, on Monday eveniug last, and some one seeing the ears approach, j started the horses, who becoming frightened ran up Market street at full speed, but were stopped at Sample's. No damage to wagon or horses. feaT Mathias Rush, of Oliver town ship, on last Saturday a week, shot three wild turkeys with one bullet from a flock of six. This is decidely the best shot we have heard of for some time. The Juniata Sentinel records the distressing death of a young wo man, about 18 years of age, named Maria Coder, of Beal township, and daughter of James Coder, a soldier in the 49th Regiment. It appears that she had a pin in her mouth and falling asleep, awoke to find it lodged some where in her throat. Medical aid was summoned, but in vain. She lingered for several days and expired, relieved, no doubt, from the most excruciating agony. What adds to the sadness of this unexpected death, is the absenoe of both her father and brother in the army. Women and children should be warned against the dangerous habit of carrying pins in their mouths. OYLTERS. —The editor's family en joyed a splendid feast on Monday, through the kindness of Mr. D. Grove, who keeps one of the best establish lishments of confectioneries, cakes, fancy articles, groceries, &c. He also receives oysters from below on Tues days and Fridays, and can supply them by the quart at a low rate. Ladies' Furs. Editors: —l thought I wnuld jjive you a brief description of the present base of supplies of the army of the Poto mac, as it may interest your readers some City Point is finely located upon an eleva ted plateau on the south hank of the James river, at its confluence with the Apporua tox. and is ten milea distant from Peters burg by the railroad, which connects the two places, but which "Johnny Secesh' has not been permitted to use since the un expected chancre of base and advent of our forces in front of the latter place last June. Tbe Point is admirably situated for the im portant military purposes which it sub serves, with an excellent river harbor, which is navigable for all sorts of vessels, from a canal scow or river barge to the stately man of war and heavy sea going steamer The town is one of the most an cient in Virginia, as the moss covered roofs of some of its venerable log houses indi cate. It boasts also of some very fine modern buildings. I observe one bearing the date of 1858, formerly inhabited by a family of "F. F. V.V but now, by the fortunes of war, appropriated to the use of post Quarter Masters, ordnance officers and other post officials. It was here that the exchange of prisoners between Uncle Sam and tottering Jeff used to be effected, flag of-trnce boats beiDg run up from Fortress Monroe for that purpose. In the good old times of peace this was also Richmond's base of supplies, Northern products being brought here by water direct from New York, Baltimore and Philadelphia, and transported from here by rail to Richmond, via Petersburg It was only for this rea son that City Point then had the slightest commercial importance as a trading town ; of and withiu itself it never amounted to anything, the old City Pointers having been obliged to go to Petersburg to buy even a jack knife or a yard of calico As the base of supplies for the army of the Potomac, it is now an important locality, and the characteristic energy and enter prize of Gen Grant has transformed the once sleepy old town, as with a magician's wand, into a wonderfully thriving and bustling military port of entry, outrivaling any equal area along the crowded wharves of New York Thus do the necessities of grim visaged war often outstrip the de niands of peaceful commerce. A splendid wharf of about one fourth of a mile in ex tent has been built, on which is an exten sive and commodious warehouse. The new military railroad njw extends some fifteen miles to our extreme front, and has its ter minus on this wharf. The most of this railroad was built in two weeks, just after the recent move on the left, on the YVeldon railroad. A large engine house is nearly completed near the wharf, a big railroad workshop, a large and commodious military hotel for boarding officers of the post dur irg the winter, a huge government bakery, large and ample quarters for the men, a bull pen, where deserters, bounty jumpers and other pfisoners are confined, and good quarters for the distribution camp are all just completed, all built of lumber brought from the North. The scene on this wharf on a busy day surpasses any business bustle I ever saw along the wharves of the Em pire City. Military stores of every de scription are being constantly landed, from all descriptions of vessels Bales of hay, hales of straw, wagons, flour, beef, vinegar, salt, potatoes, whiskey, little boxes of hard tack and ammunition for small arms, and big boxes of military clothing and muskets, besides tents, cannon wheels and everything else, needed by a large army, constantly crowd the long wharf and are being car ried to the front. Gen. Grant evidently intends that this shall remain our base of supplies for a long time, judging from the compactness and permanency of the ar rangements made. Of course the übiqui tous suttler locates here, and hangs his shingle out. There are plenty of these Yankee Shylocks around, who vend every thing eatable or wearable, which may be needed, at prices most extortionate and abominable, the most ordinary huckster of the tribe making more money than the richest merchant in Pennsylvania. On the opposite side of the James is Bermuda Hundred, Gen. Butler's base of supplies for the army operating on the North side of Richmond. Everything is going on right in the 9th corps hospital. The weather has been very bad the last week, the snow flakes flying here yesterday thick and fast. W. J WISE. On Friday, the 16th of December last, the scholars of Fairview school house, in Fayetto township, Juniata county, found a large black snake among the snow, in a stony place near the school house.
