2 2 3 3r ASSISE. LOCAL AFFAIRS. TEMPERANCE MEETING. —Mr. Det weiler, the celebrated western lecturer, will address the people of this place and vicinity on the subject of temper ance on Monday evening next, 9th inst., at 7 o'clock. All are invited to attend. THE "LITTLE FOLKS." —These hu man miniatures, Comodore Foote and sister and Col. Small, touring under the management of Mr. Win. Ellinger, were exhibited to crowded and delight ed audiences, on Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon and evening. Their performances are truly wonderful. Col. Small we think a prince of dan cers—in fact we dare not go into de tail, without devoting a lengthy article to their praise—but suffice to say eve ry feature in it gives credit to the management of this great moral exhi bition. FESTIVAL AND .CHRISTMAS TREE. — For several weeks past the scholars and teachers of the Lutheran Sabbath schools have manifested a lively inter est in a Christmas tree, erected in the room of the infant school, and on Mon day afternoon last the scholars of the adult department were invited to a New Year's festival, prepared for their benefit by the teachers. Hymns were sung, a prayer offered, and then they " walked into" the good things. While they were partaking, toasts were offer ed, several of which we give : By John Hamilton. Esq.,—The Lutheran Sab bath School, may it never grow less. By J. C. Blymyer, Supt.—Our teach ers, God bless them ! may they ever be found in the faithful discharge of their duty. By Geo. W. Elberty—The Com mittee of Arrangements, may they fare as well as they serve. Remarks were made by Rev. Fleck and J. C. Blymyer, and the happy throng adjourned, all combining in pro nouncing it a happy time. THE DRAFT.—A list of the Borough Enrollment has been procured for the purpose of having it corrected when the board meets. But little has been said thus far as to the proper course to be pursued to avoid the draft. If those liable to it will at once contribute lib erally, a fund may possibly lie raised, but to do this there must be no hang ing back or carping. If this is not done, a club subscription of 8100 or 6200 each would bo the next best thing. few* R. B. Hoover, U. S. Telegraph Corps, informs us that our old friend l'rof. A. Smith, formerly of this place, was presented with a splendid silver tea sett, valued at 8560, on Christmas eve last. From all we can learn no one in the service more deserves the thanks of all with whom he is connected than Prof. Smith. For almost two years he has faithfully discharged his duties as chief clerk and cashier of the Tele graph Corps, Department of the Cum berland, under Capt. J. C. Van Duzer, and the operators of the Corps have shown their appreciation of his kind ness and gentlemanly conduct by pre senting him with this handsome pres ent. v learn from "The Guidon," a paper published in the camp of the 12th, Pa. Cavalry, Charlestown, Va., that two members of Co. E got into a dispute of a most trivial nature, when one of them, corporal Montgomery, deliberately drew his revolver and shot Elias Brown, one of the most in offensive men of the company. The hall lodged in the brain and the poor fellow lived but a few hours, in a state ot insensibility. He was from Hun tingdon Co. Pa., and the greatest sym pathy is felt for his friends. Montgom ery was forwarded to the goal at Harper's Ferry where he will in all probability remain till ho expiates bis crime by a felon's death. t&k. A little boy named Matters had his leg broken while coasting on the hill at the head of Dorcas street. He had procured a "cutter" by subscrip- : tion from friends and others, and had used it but a few times when the acci dent occurred. Boys and girls should be very careful when skating or coast- i big. as accidents may happen when they least expect it. APPLES. —We are indebted to Mr. Henry Garver of Bratton township j". hve splendid apples, the largest of M'hich measures 14 inches in circum ference, and none of them less than 12 inches. If anybody has larger, we should like to sec them in our basket THE MEN OF SUBSTANCE. —The fol lowing is a list of persons in this coun ty who have returned incomes over 8600, with the amount of their extra 5 per cent, tax assessed by the U S. Government. If this statement is eor- I rect all persons not on the list are not | realizing more than 8000 per year, and as it is hardly possible for a family of any size to live on that amount now, it follows that all such are spending more than they make ! This tax let it be borne i in mind, is not based upon the income of the past year, but on the return of 1863, which was eminently prosperous to both business and agricultural pro ductions. The list itself also furnishes food for curiosity. Men reputed to be worth their tens of thousands return less income than sundry "greasy me chanics" who toil late and early for a living—men who have stocks, notes, bonds, houses and perhaps a farm or two are far outstripped by a class who can make no such pretensions. The whole thing is either a farce or exhib its a lamentable state of poverty or dishonesty. The incomes of those not on the list can be guessed at, while those return ed may be estimated as follows: Thus, a tax of 825 shows a taxable income of 8500, or 81 on 820 —to which add 8600 not taxed and the total income is 81100.
