agricultural, set. From the Penmylvoit-.a Farm Journal. Improvement of the Dung Kiii Fowl. MR. EDITOR : In locking over several other Agricultural Journals which I receive from month to month, I have been struck with the unanimity with which they all condemn the practice cf breeding in and in. But the re marks of the writers apply mainly to the breeding of cattle, horses, &c., poultrv being, I presume, too small a subject to claim their attention. Feeling, however, a deep interest in chick ens, you will, I hope, allow me a brief space iu yuur valuable journal for the purpose ot directing the attention of farmers to a subject which interests them all, because ihev are all to a greater or less extent engaged in it. Every one is aware of the fact that generally speaking, the fowls kept by our farmers are small in size, and usually, but indifferent lay ers. Neither their inferiority in size, nor their poor egg-!aying qualities is, however, to be attributed to the kind of food they receive, (for farmers fowls generally fare well) nor to any want of attention ; but to the fact that iu very many cases, the stock is never changed, or if changed at all, so seldom as to be pro ductive of no good results. Thousands of miserable, weak-minded people, idiots and lunatics, attest the evil results of marriages between blood relations. If such be the con sequences resulting from breeding in and in from the human family, will not the prin ciple apply to fowls. Will not a stock of fowls degenerate from year to year, both in size and in other good qualities, if no addi tions from other varieties or from other prem ises are made ? Look to the condition of the chickens usually known, as "dunghill fowls," a variety more generally ha l than any other kinds in the United States, and which although now small, and comparatively worth less, were doubtless one time in every respect equal to those for which such enormous prices are now asked. V, hy this degeneracy ? It is very easily understood. The idea "of im proving the breed of fowls rarely visits a farmer's mind, and n the multiplicity of du ties resting upon him, lie loos not think it a matter of sufficient impoi lance to change "crowers" with hisn. iglrbor, or i . kill off Ins old ones and purchase new. But this is a great error as I 'shall endeavor to prove, by tacts gathered from rr.y own experience, and which I respectful; Jf f.,r rh 1 ,,f my fellow subscribers t> the Firm Journal. Several years since. conriueed that bv changing my plan cf breeding chickens, "l could very materially improve them in some very essential particulars, i pur. based twer.tv of the finest dung hill chickens 1 eould find —eighteen hens and two coc-ks, pa ving atten tion to size and form onlv, color being disre garded. The oldest < hicken in the 11.K !. W I not more than seven months. I purchased them in the fall of the year, provided com fortable quarters for them during winter, fed them well, and received in return, a fair sup ply of eggs. from this floek I r us • 1 during the ensuing summer, about two hundred chickens. The young cock- w.-re either sent to market, or served up for my own table. I did not retain a single one of them. The old ones were also disposed of, and an entire new supply of young cocks of the best form .'uid size I could find, purchased. The ensuing spring the same system was pursued, and I thought the progeny ol the second year somewhat supe rior in size to their progenitors. The vear following, the cocks of the previous year were discarded, and their places filled with new ones, fhe two year old hens were also put aside, or retained merely for hatching. The third year I had the satisfaction of be holding the results I had anticipated. .•17 chickens were not only greatly im proved i,i appearance, but I received nearly double the quantity of eggs from the same number of . ,wls. I still pursue plan, and cannot but commend it to the attention ol some of cur ferment. My fowls are one half larger than formerly, and cost me no more feed or trouble than the smaller ones, and when sent to market they command a much better price. 1 do not believe it necessary to chancre the cocks every year, although I have done it with advantage. Every second vear would perhaps answer as well; but changed th< v "houid be by all means, if larger fowls are desired. ELXATHAX ROGERS, -JR. Montgomery county, Pa. Plowing In Clover fur \\ heat. MR. EDITOR:—I wish to let Mr. Gowcn, and others who read the Farm Journal, know the efleet that plowing in green clover has with me, and give them an opportunity of judging whether it will benefit the land ..r not. In the summer of 184'j, I had a small field of 41 acrces in clover, which 1 pastured a whne, and then let the clover grow until it was fit to cut for seed. With a large plow and tnree strong horses, I plowed ?t, then harrowed it effectually, and let it lie until ~Bth ot September, when I seeded it. In the harvest of 1850, I cut 135 dozen of wheaE which yielded ltj.j bushels or 36.} bushels per acre. It did not require to be seeded with clover the next season. 1 plowed it down last season again, and the wheat now looks tme, although a part was winter-killed, it i proper to state that the crop of wheat that was on it before the clover was plowed down uid not exceed ten bushels per acre. A LSO, My Yr?ftn.b!c Auti-Dysyfpsia Eitlfr>. This Medicine U a rertain cure for Dyspepsia in its '■ very worsf forms. Thousands of cases have been com pletely cured by it within ibe last year, which have been entirely despaired of by the regular family physi cians. We do not recommend it to cure everything—we recommend it to cure Dyspepsia, and the d seases origi nating .com it, and that it wilt cure in almost every case, and it is recommended for nothing else. In many in stances, even the worst of cases have been completely cured in two and three months, but it depends soinewl.at ; npon the constitution of the patient. This is the most wonderful Worm Destroyer ever known, and at the same lime, so pleasant to take, that J almost every child will he fond of it, and many insult*:** ] have been kaown of children crying for more after once | taking it. j This medicine is in the form of a powder, the ni. > • medicine ever used in that f. rn, ai d it operates > , I principle entirely different from any other medicine ev. i j administered by any olher physician. H is the cm, j medicine which has no Worm-seed Oil or Turpemi: combined with it, which is believed by al! other physi | cians, to be the only two things which will desttoy worms, and these two things combined, together wiih castor oil, are the active principles of a!l olher worm j medicines, which every person who has ever taated •> j smelled, knows to be the most nauseous of all nauseou-. ; medicines, and on account of which, there is generally something added to destroy this nauseous taste, and ii. j order to do this, it must be something stronger than the ! medicine itself, and therefore, it must necessarily destroy | some of its medicinal properties. These powders are I simple and so harmless, that a child may eat a whets box j at once, and it will not be hurt, while at the same time, I the principle upon which it acts being different from any thing else ever used, it will destroy all kinds of Worms - with a certainty never equaled. It will not only destroy I the seat worms, or Ascandes, and long, round worms, or Teres, but is the most effectual medicine for the destruc tion of the Tape Worm ever known. Ten doses have brought as many as FIVE Tape Worms from one person If your children have any symptoms of worms, try these powders, and in nine cases out of ten, you will nev er use any other. These are also warranted. These medicines are ail separate, and one for each d>e. ease, and each for only one disease. They are not re commended, as many other medicines are, to cure some fifteen or twenty diseases, and alt of different nature*, but they are each to cure but one disease, and tfat they will do in ninety -nine cases out of every bundled, and w here they have a fair trial and fail in all cases, the money will be returned.
