SRSBTRT AVP KRIK RAILROAD. —The Phila delphia American states that the individual subscriptions to the stock of this company amounted on Friday to $252,609. One gentle man, whose name is not given, oilers to sub scribe as much as any other, not exceeding one hundred thousand dollars. Mr. Milton Brands, of Lancaster, Fennn., a returned Californian, was found murdered in New Orleans, on the 12th instant. Two days afterwards the assasins were apprehended, and four men implicated. WHO WROTE WASHINGTON'S FAREWELL AD DRESS?—This instrument being recently claimed a- the production of Alexander Hamilton, by ilie son of Hamilton, on the strength of a copy of it, in Hamilton's hand-writing, being found among hi- papers, a passage from a letter writ ten by Governor Jay, has been published, which totally oversets the claim. By this passage it is proved that Hamilton transcribed the address fur the purpose of presenting to Washington, for his approval, certain alterations from the original. The main object in the endeavor to prove that Washington is not its author, seems to be to set aside the idea of his being opposed to the modern idea of intervention, Kossuth having failed to satisfy every body that the doctrine is really taught in the Address.— Washington Tele graph. GEN. SCOTT — AN OFFER DECLINED. —The New Orleans Delta, a democratic paper, refers to a laet of whi'-h it says it has been Sometime cognizant, that General Scott, while in the city of Mexico, alter its capture, was ottered by sev eral of the wealthiest citizens of the Mexican republic to be made President of that country : and, as an inducement to the offer, they bound themselves to settle upon him the sum of one million of dollars. "The splendid offer," 3ays the Delta, " was declined hy the General, with scarcely a moment's consideration. The brave old soldier could not be tempted by such induce ments to abandon the flag under which he had achieved so much renown and honor." The Port Tobacco, Md., Times gives an ac count of a shocking occurrence which took place on Thursday last, in the vicinty of Bryan town. Charles county. A man named James S. Johnson had left Bryantown to proceed to his home in company with two comrades named Francis A. Osborne and George A. Smith. The next morning Johnson was found by the road side, burnt in the most horrible manner, from his stomach downwards. He was about forty iect from the remains of a large fire, in the cin ders of which were found the buttons and other remnants of his clothing. He died shortly af ter he w as discovered, but in consequence of an exclamation he made, that he had been "robbed and burnt by them men," suspicion w as directed towards the persons whom he had been in com pany with the previous evening, and after the finding of the coroner's jury, they were arrested and committed to jail All the patty were ha bitual drunkards, and at the time they were seen t igr ther on the road had a bottle of liquor with them. WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 —The Congressional Banquet at Willard's Hotel, last night, in honor of the birth-day of Washington, was the strong est demonstration yet made. Hon. Robert 1 . Stockton presided, supported by Messrs. \ ena ble and Taylor, of Ohio, and Gen. Scott. Judge Wayne, Senator King, and others, on his right and left. \lr. Stockton delivered a patriotic and eloquent opening speech. Mr. Attorney General Crittenden delivered a beautiful and elaborate speech in honor of Washington's ser ines and patriotism, taking, in the course of his remarks, strong ground against intervention. Mr. Bay ley, of \ a., also responded briefly to a tua't. The Judiciary being toasted. Judge Wayne re sponded in an able speech, in which be pro nounced it unconstitutional to intervene for non intervention. Gen. Scott responded very hap pily to a toast complimentary to the Army. No cue rising to respond to the toast of the N'avv, Mr. Stockton spoke again very felicitously and at considerable length. Mr. Toombs ol Ga., followed in response to a toast, and made a fu rious onslaught upon Kossuth and his doctrines. Mr. Dawson, of Ga., responded in behalf of the ladies; Mr. Ritchie for the press; and Mr. G. W. Park Cuslis, in reply to the toast to the memory of Washington, ail emphatically against intervention. The saloon where the banquet was b.pld, was very beautifully decorated, and the occasion Wai one of much display Lewistown Academy.
