They pretended that they would not nom inate a ticket for the election, last week, but just a day or so before Friday, met in secret and pri vate in a warm lime-kiln, and there made a tick et. They then notified their rotors and brought them to the polls almost to a man. A large num ber of Democrats staid at home under the suppo sition that there would be no opposition to our ticket, and thus the Republicans succeeded in electing their Assessor. The world still moves. SOUTH CORNWALL, Morel, 24, 1802. Mn. Emma perceive by the last Anvr.n.- TIBER that my amiable friend "Union," disclaims being n teacher nnd' backs down a few degrees by classing himself among school-boys. What a beneficial effect a few years tuition would bare upon his erudition 1 lie might then became sen sible of knowing how to speak and what to ■ay. In hie first article he openly charged the South Cornwall Teachers with raising a disturhafee at a spelling•sohool, and in the second he admits that he does not know whether I was among the number. lam certain that several of our teach ers as we myself were nut there, yet his charge includes "The South Cornwall Teachers." If you desire to say anything concerning this important matter, please be more.explicit. Come "Union" there are too many contradictions in your sense lest; inuendoes. In the first place yini appear si a eortbaliondent, then as a school , bny, find lastly as tioliath the bold Philistine. "'r would not be surprised to hear of you claiming in your next to be "Daniel of the lion's den." By so do ing you may claim the merited reward of having done "foal, strode" (first rate.) I will conclude by returning my unfeigned thanks to "Union," alias school boy, alio& correspondent, alias Goli ath, for the complimentary title conferred upon Me. EUREKA. [For the AM:trifler.] LEtursoze, MAR= 24th, 1862 MR. of the article "Excelsior," in your last paper, obviates the necessity of a reply, yet at his request I deign to give him a passing notice. I do not believe,. hoirever, that I could make his chawi appear more ridiculous by iinY iifotless short of getting the au thor to re.*rite it. It Woilla bb eine to inflict a severe castigation for so hi - alders a production. It was no doubt written for the purpose of divert. ing the public from own short coatings. Some of my criticisms, like Banquo'a ghoit, Seem to be continually haunting his barren imagination. I do not (Neat td any one replying to my attitiles;liut when misconstructions are placed upon sentences, and advantdgea sought in agroveling way, t claim the privilege to be h.:crd. "Excelsioe" may well call out for a pill for he iii eMphatieally a sick Ishmadite—his complaint being tin eriviods den tal weakness, bordering on idiocy, if I may take his brilliant productitn as &symptom df his Mal ady. Nature has been kind to him in one rest cot —it has spared him the affliction of being cepa: ble of seeing his own ignorance, whislr is a greit blessing to those with weak intellects. I feel dis posed to deal mildly with him on account of his mental infirmities. Dy washing his oyes, and taking a second rending (If read he can,) "Ex celsior" will discover that I never stated that "specimens of equestriansbip Will be displayed during the debate," but his sense of honor was too obtuse to tell the truth. "Excelsior" intends to be at the Onward schoel-house, and what a consummate ass he must tO e'xpeet to see "spec imens of equestrianship during the course of the debate." Besides, if we desire the services of a greenhorn, who is obliged,to visit the ladies pre• vious to the debate to instruct them to applaud him in his attempts to speak, we will apprize him of it, meantime Ise need not make himself uneasy about coming. "Excelsior" is "glad that John found erroneo u s mistakes! in Cobb." Kind reader, did you ev er read a sentence clothed in more elegant lan guage? "lieroneuus mistakes!" Shadcis of Shaks. pears I With a hundred years' more cipetienee he may become as able a writer as he is a speak er, provided the necessary instructions be given to the ladies, of °corr.°. As it is never too late to do good, I would advis:a:J-24:01181er" to go to Academies and Colleges likewise, and labor With untiring zeal in revising his head, instead of ask ing me to publish "erroneous mistakes . 1 " for his especial benefit. Yours Truly, JOWN. At the election on Friday a pretty full vote was polled. Some uneipected results *ere the consequence. In some districts the Democrats were defeated, while in others the Re publicises were floored. In this borong3 the op- position Wade use of chip-trap as usual,- and succeeded In bridging out their rotes almost to a man to the polls, while the Democrats are lack ing ablut 100 votes of a full poll. We nomina ted a Democratic tioket, and placed it as such he. fora the people. limy- labelled theirs with all &fads of signs fur the attraction of the people.— Not satisfied with appropriating to themselves the name of "Union," they took pains to impress upon certain persons that the Democrats were Secessionists, disunionists, Brack inridgers,, cte. They also made a hobby of the Market question and sale of the Railroad Stock, and 40 4011 bit got some votes on those points. It is very sorpri sing that people do not see into such humbug.— For the past three or four years the Council has been in the hands of the opposition, two years of which the very gentlemen now sleeted Chief Burgess noted in that capacity, and yet the first step towards a marketer the sale of the stock to. maids to .be taken, yet they made it appear to some folks that they were the exclusive friends of bath, dad that the Demoerats were opposed to it. Such things ate called shreirdness in polities, but the ends] if attained, are certainly at the expense of truth and self respect. The game (offices) are not worth the powder (character)that is sacrificed. For the. encouragement of Democrats we need only point tithe vote Polled. They will there see, that although we hove passed during the past year through all kinds of abuse and misrep resentation, We are still a power in the land,— pure and unadulterated. Defeated but not dis couraged, and again ready to buckle on the ar• mor and fight under the harmer of ever living Democraey. SPRING gLECTIOS RETURNS Or' Democrats marked with a star Cr).
