"~ ~'~ = THE CORNER. GOLD DISCOVIDDED man PHILADELPHIA -AVOIMOING Discotqtes.—An interest ing paper' relative to' the •natural dissemi nation of gold has been read before the American Philosophical Society, in which tile statement has been made that the pre- Cious metal exists in the clay deposit be neath the City of Philadelphia. This clay covers an area of ten square miles, and Resat an-average depth of fifteen feet. The paper says:—'•The inquiry was started whether gold was diffused in this earthly bed. From a central locality, which might afford a fair assay for the whole—the cel lar of a market house in Market street, near Eleventh street—some of the clay, was obtained at a depth of fourteen feet, where It could not have be a n an artifice] deposit. The weight of 139 grammes was dried and duly treated, and yielded one eighth of a millgramme of gold; a very de cided quantity , on a fine assay balance It was afterward ascertained that the clay in itamatural moisture loses about fifteen per cent by drying. So that, as it lies in the ground, the clay contains one part gold in 1,224,000. This experiment was repeat ed upon clay taken from a brickyard in the suburbs of the city, with nearly the lame result. In order to calculate with some accura ey the value of this body of wealth, the theorist cut out blocks of the clay, and found that, on an average, a cubic foot. as lilies in the ground, weighed 120 pounds, as near as may be—making the specific gravity 192. Thy• assay gave seven tenths of a grain, say three carats' worth of gold to the cubic foot. If we assume the data akvady given, we get 4,180 millions of cubic feet of clay under our streets add houses, in which securely lies g126,000,- 000. And if, as is pretty certain, the corL' *lrate limits of the city would afford eight times this bulk of clay, we have more gold than has yet been brought, according to the statistics, from California. and Austra lia. It is stated that every time a cartload of clay is hauled - out of a cellar, enough gold goes with it to pay for the carting. And tithe bricks which front our houses CAW hay brought 'to tit fr surface. in the firm ofgold leaf, the amount of gold which they. contain,. we, should haVe the glittering show of two square iti`ches on eery These statements might excite merriment if they were not conn cted with the names of Mr. Eckfeld, principal Assayer of the Mint, and Mr. E. W. -Dubois, who read the paper before the Philosophical Society. `An allusion is also-made to a r. port that Mr. Lennig's workmen washed out gold from the sands of the River Delaware a few years ago. Those of our citizens who deidre to amass a fortune can consequent ly purchase a "cradle," and locate on some sandbank down the bay, or sink a pit be teeth" their dwelling and raise the gold' through a trap door in their dining room floor. The "claim', accruing to the inqui rer establishment will doubtless be one of the most profitable in the city Philadelphia Inquirer SUMMER . PRUNING APPLE TREES. ---It is pretty well established fact that apple tree —and we would add pear trees—pruned from the middle of July to the ,nridsllo of August sustain the operation ' with much more advantage than if pruned at any oth er period of the year. 11 pruned at that time, the wound will heel over, and make, what surgeons would say of a properly attiputated arm or leg, a handsome stump. If the branches he lopped in winter or spring, the stump generally leaves a per petual scar; and if aft r the sap has corn menced flowing, a bare hone, as it were, projecting from the living parts ofthe tree, and remaining there until it rots away, When frequently the decay "continues on, aqa sort of gangrene, into the very hart of the tree, much to its injury. Who 'has not observed this in his experieneel We have more than once witnessed the benefits of pruning in midsUmmer, and have always been impressed with the ad vantage over the system generally pur sued. On one or two occasions, some years ago, we adverted to the fact, and now again call attention to it, specially as the season for trying it is at hand. Six or eight years ago, a first-class far mer upon a leased pace, trimm d the ap ple trees in midsummer, at which the land lord who had greater pretention to farm ing than his tenant, was very indignant. and threatened a suit for damages; but in one year alter, when we saw the stumps, a more perfect success was never accom plished. A CHARLESTON merchant was drafted for the war some tine since, and procured a substitute who was killed in an engage ment.- The merchant has again been drafted, and pleaded tl - .at he could not go, es he had been r •gularly killed , and was .so recorded. it is said that the military au thorities refused to recognize his _title to exemption, and instated on regarding him as a living man. ft' Gen McClellen, is a son of the late Dr. McCleltin, n celebrated Surgeon of Philadelphia, and'is only thirty five years of age. He has alr ady made his mark as a man of more than ordinary scienci , and energy, and if his lie. should he spared his name and his fame will become household words with the American people. We feel proud of him as a Pennsylvanian. Otr PrivateiVa 83 —"Th y'ro comin", darn m- bp you scar d?"
