CDT aterittr. A SALE OF PRINCIPALITIES The President has issued a procla mation for the sale, in October next, of four and three-quarter millions of Acres of public, lands in Minnesota, and for the sale next month, of sev en millions of acres in Kansas and Nebraska. Here is territory enough to set up a half a dozen kingdoms of the Enrdpean dimensions. Belgium, Holland, Hanover, the Papal States, and the Swiss Confederation, are each only about one-half as large as the territory now brought to the ham mer. Greece contains two thousand square miles less. Not one of the German States of Wurtenberg, Sax ony, Baden,Hesse Camel, Hesse Darmstadt, fecklenburg, Schwerin, Oldenburg or Nassau, is much more than one-third of this extent; and in fact all of them except Wurtem burg are loss than one-fourth of it.— The other German States do not, in the aggregate, exceed one-half of this amount of territory. Tuscany, Parma, Lucca and Modena, added together, would make 'about seven tenths of it. This superfluous slice of .our public lands which we are putting up at auction, is about one sixth as large as Groat Britain her self, one-tenth as large as France or Turkey, and one-fifth as large as Prussia. Truly, there is space enough hero for manufacturing principalities and powers without number, and without ever missing the ground.— When it all gets nicely fenced in, and the squatter sovereigns have taken possession, the Lilliputian kingdoms of' European sovereigns will not be worth comparing with our . Brobdig nugian dimensions. A HARD HlT.—The Chronicle of the West, a German paper pUblished at Rook Island, thus informs its read ers of the origin of the 'wide awakes' —a name originally belonging to a plug-ugly association, such as use the awl on the election days in Baltiinore. The Chronicle says : "The gentlemen of the "Wide Awake club," who are now so zeal ously blowing their horn, do not ap• pear to'know what' historical remin iscences are attached tiik, this namo.— The title 'Wide Awake, first acquired notoriety in 1854, when it graced those bands of nativoists, who somewhat later acquired such celebrity under the n a me of 'Know Nothings' Per sons who lived in New York in 1854, will remember 'the outrages which those white-hatted loafers, who called themselves 'Wide Awakes,' repeated ly committed upon the. Germans of New York, Brooklyn and Williams burg. For the sake of decency the Republfc.an battalions should have adopted' a different cognomen.' EARLY VICE.—Lord Shaftesbury re cently stated, as the result of hisper- BOHM investigation, that "of all the adult male criminals in London, not two in a hundred who lived an hon est life up to the age of twenty, af terwards enter upon a course of crime," and that "almost all who en ter upon such a course, do so between the ages of eight and sixteen." Oh I the necessity of family discipline ! Oh ! the blessedness of early reli gious instruction ! SSP "Well, Susan, what do you think of married ladies being happy?" * "Why I think there are more aint that is than is that aint." *: Stir !rGood morning, Ilttr.•Grumm; • Whet is the news to-day?"
