Iron-Making—The New Process. Our recent refferences to the new pro cess of iron man ufact ure,says_the Pittsburg Gazelie, by which puddling is practically dispensed with, and which has been intro. duced in this city, have attracted a very general attention from the press. In additiut. to what lms been already stated, we learn further that practical men think well or the new process, that it is the best sugestion yet made, but that a practical monopoly cannot grow out of it. The idea is to decarbonise the iron ore by stirring in oxides while it is in fusion. This is an old process, though mach more is stirred in than was done formerly. To stir iu some, .Was always done to make iron come quicker. To stir in somewhat limit!, tram:rot wed it. to steel, which is the BCESZIIIICr process. To stir in still inure, renderS the iron malleable. This is the procres now used. This is not sup posed to be patentable, because always practiced, except as to the quantity of ox ides used. But the inventor bass method of manipulating the iron, which is paten table, and has been paten ted,and will prove of value. The diicoverer is a ,German, of New 'York. Ile made his hit by experiment ing to avoid the difficulties which render the Bessamer process unreliable and waste ' fut., The process disengages the carbon so rapidly that it consumes the metal. Ile kept stirring in oxides of iron into the molten mass until the steel producing point passed, and found he had 'malleable iron. The boiling process is not dispensed with, but puddlers are pretty much laid aside. The ore k conducted from the melting furnace directly lute the boiling *pets, iu - slediriX 'being cast into pigs. It, is on this special manipulation that the patent rests, as we understand it. :Much as this improvement accomplishes, practi cal men regard the ultimate improvement as still ahead. MEN' buy wood by the ponna iu Pars The Gohi Fields in Africa By reports transmitted to the Govern ment of the Cape of Good Hope Cron the geologists sent out to explore the gold fields iu South Al rica, it appears that the prospect of profitable returns are very un favorable. Traces were discovered of old excavations carried to the depth of thirty fivmfeet, but now filled up by the lapse of time: - The most encouraging specimens were - discovered about thirteen inches be low the surface, but at a greater depth the sold was distributed in extremely fine particles through the quartz roek.antl the friable tleti;itus of a green talecse slate. The dip of the strata is seventy-five de grees, and the search for gold requires the sinking of almost rerpendicular shafts. The amount of gold as yet procured is so small that the miners prefer "prospecting" to continue their present laborous work. This alledged discovery of gold will there fore add very little 'to the product of the precious metals. A CITIZEN of Burlington, Vt., has in vented a clock that runs by electricity, and never requires minding. it has only three wheels, no weights or springs, and it is claimed that it has little . friction, is not affected by heat, cold, dampness or jarring. A single clock arid battery can be connected with any number of dials and indicators, in the same building, or even along the whole line of a railway. • 1111SCELL21E0US. "El W. CLARK CO., je).
