Preserve the Trees There is a great want of reflection i the American husbandman as to the gross neglect and wilful waste of the forests. Every where is the old woods being felled by the pioneer's axe, and destroyed by the conflagrations. The new settler clears in a single year more acres than he can really cultivate in ten. And this totally independent of the legitimate consump tion of trees for ship-buildings, the arts, manufactures, plank-roads, railroads, fire wood, &c., to the amount annually of mil lions of dollars. Independent of' the beauty of trees iu our country, where exposure, in consequence of the remarka ble clearness of the atmosphere, to the burning heat of the sun is great, the use of trees for shade is evident. A tree is both a shade and a pleasure to a house. The plainest looking house looks beauti ful, if it has a grass-plot before it shaded with a tree. Trees should be planted not only by dwelling houses, but they should be in every pasture, by watering places, and near every barn—wherever cattle, horses or sheep are. Animals are so grateful for a shade from the burning sun, as pay back thanks in the shape of milk, fleece, and strength for the favor. Trees also improve a soil. The roots by penetrating deeply into the ground, let iu the air to produce their slow but sure effects. The radicles decompose 'the grains of sand, and extract from them some of the elements essential to the soil. They drink in the carbonic acid formed beneath, and thus purity the air while nourishing themselves. The annual de posit of leaves, and the final decay of the branches and trunk go to constitute the mould upon which other plants' grow. And the soil thus formed is not so liable to be washed away, as that on uncovered rocks, and the sides of mountains. Trees also serve as conductors of lielt ning„ and thus give activity to the vital powers of plants, and causes the clouds to discharge their contents upon the earth. A few trees on the summit of a hill are sufficient to produce this effect. A thun der cloud which will pass over a bare mountain unbroken, will pour (town its gladdening moisture, if its electricity is drawn off by these natural conductors. It is probable that much of the sterility of Mexico, Spain, &c., is owing to the de struction of the forests ; for these not only shade the ground in the summer, but coat the earth and keep it warm in winter. It is stated that in Honduras the first ma hogany cutters found the cold so great under the immense forests, that they were obliged to kindle fires to keep themselves warm, though within 16' of the equator. I Rain falling on the woods of a hill-side is retained by the deep spongy mass formed by the leaves, instead of it rushing down and carrying away loose soil. Trees al so equalize the temperature. and pro tect from the extremes of heat and cold. dryness and humidity. Trees protect houses, barns, &c., as forests protect a country from the violence of winds. Su gar plantations existed in the valley of Mexico in the time of Curtez, but the cut tin;, down the trees has rendered the spot now too Cold for the sugar cane to thrive. The laws of atmospheric motion show that a bare hill gives no protection. The wind pours over it as water over a Jam, but if the hill be capped with trees, the wind is broken into spray, and its violence sen sibly diminished. On the prairies of Illi nois, the wind often blows a gale so vio- lent as to render men unable to stand. Settlers are obliged to shelter their habi tations under the lea of forests or promon tories. Forests not only protect from winds but protect their formation. The air resting over a broken surface can not be rapidly heated to a uniformly high temperature, so as to rise upwards in great masses and create a violent wind. An English farmer has justly observed that the local climate of any country may be much improved by a plentiful supply of trees. Cattle, he says, invariably thrive better in fields moderately sheltered, than in an open country. Pasture lands should be bordered with rows of trees, so that cattle may now and them browse in the shade. From these and a thousand other con siderations easily suggested, it must be apparent how important that the wanton waste of them should be stayed, and sup plies provided for the wants of those spots now destitute. Some one has said, "put up a picture in your room," and we say, stud your homestead, and. your fields with trees. WHY must a telegram be slower in transmission than most letters? Because it must go by so many posts before it reaches its destination. GIFT stores in New York city buy their bogus jewelry, it is said, at so much a pound from Connecticut manufacturers. Patina MISTILER'S BITTERS INTERMITTVNT A.ND REMITTENT FEVER Intermittent Fever is similar to Fever and Ague and its origin can be traced to the same causes. As its name implies it is remittent in its effect, recurring at staters periods. As in Fever and Agno this disease is proceeded by a dull, listless feeling. Soon the Fever, accompanied by a violent heau ache, comes on. After raging a length of time it disappears for a few hours, only to return with increased severity, and leaving the sallerer prostrated mentally and phy sically. In ordinftsy practice the first re sort of the physician in the treatment of this complaint is quinine and mercury. The disease by this treatment is checked—not cured—and is liable at any time to return. 691,',50 10 MISHLER'S BITTERS CHOLER.-. Mishler's Bitters cures effectually all such cases by inducing a healthy action of the Liver and by their unsurpassed tonic pro perties prevent a recurrence of the disease. Wben Mishler's Bitters were firseintro duced to the public the proprietor did not feel justified in recommending it as a spe cific; for Cholera During the fall of 1865, Dr. Mishler received the following note from Jacob L. Baker, Esq., of Lancaster Pa., a member of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Mr. Baker had a great deal of experience in the treatment of Cholera is a druggist of sixteen years standingovas Hospital Steward in the - Jefferson Hospital, Philadelpbut, for three years, and is withal a gentleman of undoubted integrity and one in whose statement the most implicit confidence can be placed : Lancaster, "November 3d, 1865. Dr. Mishler—Dear Sin—Knowing that the Cholera with its dreadful ravages is now up on our land, and knowing that no medi cine now in our country possesses such a calorie intim eller "which is the vital reme dy for all diseases of this kind," as the Bitters you now making I request you to prepare such a quantity of your bitter as would suit all demancls, as I assure you they will be an invaluable remedy, and will be hailed as a blessing by all who will use it. Yours respectfully. JACOB L. BAKER Being thus urged, and having noticed the Barters were constantly curing the most violent cases of Diarrhoea, Cholera illorbus and kindred complain ts,Dr. Misliler at last ()tiered his eoutpounds as a cure thr Cholera 'l•he result has exceeded his most sanguine expectations and fully justifies all that Mr. Baker sat a in his note. It certainly proves that Mr. Baker's practical knowledge of ti.edi aloe far exceeds that of most doctors who too often close their patients with de leterious drugs on some absurd theory.— For the purpose of showing that . I‘l ishler's Herb Bitters will cure Cholera we give below a few facts. .-i-N-,,-.2. , , %; All intelligent persons who have investi gated the origin of cholera, agree that it is caused by poison introduced and generated into the system by impure water, damp ness, filth and over-crowded rooms with deficient ventilation. This is proved by the fact that cholera always rages worse on hoard of ships where all of the above causes are foilint more or less combined. To cure cholera, and also to prevent it,it is necessary to neutralize this position, and that Mishler's Bitters will do this is proven by the following, : The steamship Virginia, arrived at the Port of New - York about the middle of April with cholera a board a number of the passengers having died during the voyage with this complaint. Among the passer. gors were a thin ily named Schmidt, front Baden, Germany. This family was at tacked with cholera. Fortunately for them they had friends living in this city f an ca sier. Pa.,) who knew the virtues of XI ish ler's Bitters and who procured a bottle and sent it to the Schmidt fancily. When this package arrived at Quarantine, the doctors examined it and confiscated the contents. Another bottle was procured and packed in a more secure manner: it safely reached the Schmiths. On its arrival aboard the Fir pinto, Henry Selmdth and Christ. Schmitt' were both laboring tender choleric symp toms: Mrs. Marcia Schmidt, wife of the former was very bad, not expected to re cover, and a son had died of the dread com plaint and had been buried theday previ ens. It was in this plight a bottle of Wish. ler's Bitters, sent forth like an Angel of Mercy found the poor Schmidt family.— Henry Schmid' was the first to try it, and so instantaneous was the relief be experi• enced that he gave it to his wife and brothel: both of whom it at once relieved. They used the entire contents of the bottle ant all three were so much relieved that the physicians permitted them to leave the Virginia, after being confined at quarantine aboard that scourge ship forty-two says.— Thu Schmiths proceeded to their relative:. in Lancaster, and at an early opportunity called on Dr. :dishier to express their grad. tude for the timely relief they had found in his Bitters. Mr- Henry Schmidt stated that all the compounds the doctors Lad given hint did no good, but that one glast of :klishler's Bitters made him feel like fi new man, warming his whole system, giving in in a healthful heat and causing loin to perspire freely. His statement was substantially was substantially as given above. and lie further said that if the doe• tors had not kept the first bottle from reaching him, his son would yet hrve been living. Mrs. Schmidt was still weak front the etlbet of cholera, but the continued use of the Bitters were most sorely restoring her accustomed vigor. It is not to be expected that regular M. Ps. will admit, that any remedy not to be found in the Dispensatory will cure Chol era or any other complaint, but candor compels Dr. D. H. Bissell. of the Cholera Hospital ship " Falcon" to admit that he believes Mishler's Bitters to be a'• very good Tonic." In reply as to a case of 'Mi ters that was sent to him by a well known gentleman of Lancaster, he writes as fol lows : Hospital Ship Falcon, gnarl:n[ln, New York,.lone Tth, 1:=66. George S.
