"What a wonderful book !" cried all the night birds, "and it must be right; our lady, the owl, having such very large eyes, ,of course she can see through all the mists pf ignorance." "Very true," pried the bats ; "she is right, po doubt. Aa for us we cannot see a blink, the moon and sun are alike to us, and for anything we know there is no light in either; so we go over in a body to her opinion." And it is said the matter was buzzed about till the eagle heard of it. He called the birds around him, and, looking down on them from his rocky throne, spoke thus: "Children of the light and of the day poware of niyht-birds I . Their eyes may bti large, but they are so formed that they cannot receive the light, and what they cannot see they deny the existence of Let them praise Moon-light in their haunts; they have never known anything better; but lei us who love the light, because our oyes can bear it; give glory to the great fountain of it, and make our boast of the Ann, while we pity the ignorance of poor moot-worshippers, all the sad lot of those who lire its darkness. I have no doubt that the readers of the !'Trumpet," ero this, have found P. H. Flagg, a man whose extraordinary powers of mind as a critic, very few persons are eompetent to appreoiate. It. cannot be denied that this same Hogg, exceeds to an alarming degree the Peens° which respectability is allowed to posess, of being pedantic, formal, cot:a n:PA/place and ludiorous.
