IKgctolliu'siT. •WREN IB A FARMER RICH? Arthur Vale, Willoughby, Lake Co., Ohio, •writes: “Wo have many farmers in this country who have good houses, barns and orchards, and who are out of debt; and yet they work as hard as ever, and seem as unsatisfied as when they worn poor. The question arises, “When is a farmer rich?” The best evidence that a farmer is rich will bo a pleasant bed-room in his house, containing a spare bed. On no occasion will any of the family need to occupy it; and there will be such convenience that the guest will come out ready for the breakfast table. , This room not only rep resents several thousand dollars, butnlso food furniture, and shade in summer.— n most families this room is not obtain ed until the oldest girl has a beau, or the oldest boy gets the mitteu. Moreover, the folks have early cucumbers; and, from Jhly till frost, sweet .corn. Every morning the fire is built of dry wood; twiefiff day, the year round, there is milk to strain; horses are not beard stamping In the night; the hogs cannot run, no body-eats poor butter, or drinks cofibe without cream; pickles nro taken out of cider vinegar; if a child bus a sore throat, there is no running to a neighbor’s for honey; even In September a few hens are kind enough to lay; if the old man sud denly starts for the county seat, a pack age of cake and cheese is handed him, and he does not mutter because a clean shirt is not ready; in May, some can bo found in the bottoms of barrels, and in August there is Jard in crocks and pork in the brine. After breakfast, the father will bo likbly to read a chapter in the bible, and then bow before the Crea tor confessing his tender mercies. We care not how many fat cattle a far mer may have, nor how many dairy cows; nor hogs, in a yard four rails high, fed with whey and bran from barrels which steam in the sun; nor how many acres running off toward a river: nor how many thousand dollars are at inter est; nor how much folks may stand aside when he goes into the store; if there is not a spare bed in his house, he is a poor man.— N. Y. Tribune. LiTE VS. EAICLT COLTS. In conversing with some of the gentle men practically familiar with the subject of breeding, who were in attendance at the recent exhibition of horses in this city, wo found it to bo the opinion of many of them that it was far bettor to have colts dropped late in the season than in the spring, as is now the almost uni versal practice, and in some sections of the State the former is fast gaining favor. It certainly has many advantages— Where colts come in the spring and are taken off*at the approach of cold weather, they are poorly llttod to withstand the severe season of winter, are obliged to bo kept on dry forage, if given a little grain as an extra feed, they are often injured by it, as their system is easily thrown out of order thereby, and they almost hi varia bly come out in tbe spring very poor.— tffcw it seems to us these disadvantages can be most completely overcome by just reversing the general order. Have colts come in the fall, say about the last of Au gust, ami let them remain with the mare through the winter. Provide a large stall, have the floor well furnished With straw, sawdust or fine shavings as a litter, and turn them in together loose. Feed the mare well, giving a moderate quantity of grain. This will make the milk richer, and consequently the colt will receive full benefit of the grain without the 111 results attending the feeding it directly to them when young. Then in tlju spring, with fresh starting of the new, tender grass, the colt can bo taken off and en closed in some spot whore ho can have a choice “ bite,” where, in a short time, he will be nil ready to go on growing, and by fall, will have attained sufficient age, and practice in “ foraging,”' to withstand the winter well. The matter is worthy ot attention by all who are engaged in breeding. —Maine Farmer. A Receipt Wouth O.m: Thousand Dollars. —The Ohio Cultivator says: Take one pound of sal-soda and a half pound of unslack lime, put them it) a gal lon of water and boil twenty minutes, let it stand till cool, then drain off, and put in a strong jug or jar; soak your dirty clothes over night, or until they are wet through, then wring them out and rub on plenty of soap, ami In one boiler of clothes well covered with water, add one teacunfui of washing fluid; boil half an hour briskly, then wash them thorough ly through one suds, rinse, and your clothes Will look better than the old way of washing twice before boiling. This is an invaluable receipt, and I want every poor tired woman to try it. I think with a patent wash-tub to do the little rubbing the washer-woman might take the old bi ble and compose herself on a lounge and let the washing do itself. I Plant Peas Deep.—The theory re cently advocated of planting peas very deeply iu the earth, in oTder to prolong the bearing capacity of tiio vines, has beep well tested and found to be correct A farmer ploughed a furrow beam deep then scattered the seed beds at the bot tom, alter which he turnedadeep furrow upon them with his plough, covering them to the depth of twelve or fourteen inches. They pushed their way up through the thick mass of earth very soon, and instead of turning yellow at the bottom and dying after the lirst gath ering, they blossomed and boro until he was tired picking the pods. If such a re suit will uniformly' be realized from the plan, pea culture may bo more profitable than heretofore. Corn Maricer.— A farmer at Chester field, HI., describes a simple and cheap corn roarkor. Jt is made by putting a short axle in the forward wheels of a wag on, and a long one j n the hind ones: couple them together by a six feet stick pinned on the hind axle, and running to the centre of the coupling; the wagon tongue can bo put on the front axle bv two smuli iron bolts put through the ends of the hounds and axle • the axles can bo made of poles. Put the front wheels four feet apart, and the other twelve feet though the length of can be made to suit. Sixty acres in a day can be marked with it. It runs light, ami makes a good mark, and one that will show after a rain as good as a sled mark. Training Heifers.—A Pennsylvania farmer who has trained and milked heif ers for more than fifty years, and never had any trouble about |tiielr jumping kicking or running, gives the rural American the following secret: “When I intend to raise a heifer calf for a milk cow, I always “raise it by hand" and when feeding frequently, handle it by rubbing it gently down over the bead and neck until It becomes tame and gentle The rubbing is done at the first feeding with milk, and continued until I quit feeding it; I never afterward had any trouble about milking them. fiST* A Bilk plant Is reported to have been discovered in Peru, and is described in a communication recently sent to the State Department at Washington. The shrub is three or feet in height. The silk is enclosed in a pod, of which each plant gives a number, and is declared to be superior in fineness and quality to the production of the silk-worm. It Is a wild perennial, the seed small and easily sena rated from the fibre. The stems of the plants produce a long and very brilliant fibre, superior in strength and beauty to the finest linen thread. * Points in a Good Milker.—A corres pondent m the Country Gentleman says; In selecting a milker, look well to the udder. Before milking it should be wide and brqad, not hanging down like a sack • and hard and shiny, nearly destitute ot' hair, and what there, is should be fine short and bright. Aftermilking, the ud der should be soft and apparently a skin bag. If after milking, the udder Is hard and full, itshowsthatitisflesh, notmiik. that distends it.” In Russia horses are chiefly bought and sold at great horse-fairs, which are held annually In various parts of the country. There are every year 880 of these fairs, at which the number of ani mals sold is estimated at 268,000. Boots, & Ucatfjec. £JHEAP BOOT AND SHOE STOKEI AT THE SIGN OP THE MAMMOTH BOOT.
