an 'pt()nuscb,olb. lkw.—Comparaiively but few amongst the many who protess to be careful observers of natural phenomena have attained to a mod erate knowledge of the fbrmation of dew. It is often-indeed com monly—said that. the dew "falls," anal the observation is allowed to pass even by persons who know full well that it does not fill], the cc quiesence being partly due to the prevalence of erroneous notions On the subject, and partly to the diffi culty of establishing better notions, in their stead. This is a subject how ever, of such great importance that it should have some amount of at tention from all lovers of the coun try, and especially from such as are employed in out door business, whether in the forest, the field, or in the garden. The most casual observation will convince any one that between the dew and the rain there must be au essential d:ffer ence, for rain certainly falls, and•we see the clouds that produce it ; but we do not see the dew fall, and its appearance is not accounted for by clouds as the appearance of rain is, for, in truth, the clear, moonlight night, is the very tithe when dew appears most conspicuously, so that the early walkers amongst long grass may be properly warned to go out protected by means of water proof boots. It is the same in win ter as in summer as to be the cir cumstances that accompany, and, as will. be seen, that not only ac company, but cause a deposition of dew ; but the result is different to this extent, that whereas iu summer the dew that appears in the form of globules of water, in winter its appearance is bat of .hoar frost. Now, with the popniar—and we must add with the vuy ignorant— description of the dew as "falling," to dispose of it in these remarks, we -shall observe that while the summer dew is not rain, neither is the winter dew snow. Rain fails and snow falls, and both are discharged from the clouds that are not, only visible at the time, but often appear long before the fall takes place, and give us a notice that it is coming. But the time to look for a heavy dew, or thick crust of beautiful hoar frost is when there are no cloudS, and when the barom eter is high, the air calm, and com paratively speaking, dry and cold— while earth and its belongings, such as grass, trees, &c., are compara mot warm.—Gardener's DUST BATHS FOR PO ULT RY.- Cleanliness is important in fowl h.ousea, for experience shows that poultry - are unfavorably effected by the emanation from filthy quarters, and, besides working in places where roots and floors are covered with the droppings, is decidedly unpleasant. Dry earth, in the form of prier , scattered everywhere, will abi‘orli - the - bad odors, giving wholesome atmosphere to the hen house, and at the same time pre serve the manure in the least offen sive condition. Besides these pur poses, a box of dry earth should be in a convenient corner of every fowl-house for the fowls to roll in. Dust from the highway is:most con venient. Replace the same by an equal quantity of good gravel, and the public will be the gainer. LEMON Wm.—Pare off the rinds of six large lemons, cut them and squeeze out the juice, steep the rinds in the juice and put to it a quart of brandy, let it stand three days in an earthen pot tightly cov ered, then squeeze six more lemons and mix the juice with two quarts of water and as much loaf sugar as will sweeten the whole, boil the sugar water and lemons together ; let it stand till it cools, then add a quart of white wine and the other lemons and brandy, mix them to gether, end run it through a flannel hag into some vessel ; let it stand three months, and bottle off, cork the bottles well and keep it cool. It vriii lie` ready for use in a month or six'weeks: HOW TO DRY FRI: fT.--Parel And core peaches, pears, quinces or cit ron ; make a syrup flavored with lemon-peel, boil the fruit till clone; drain in a colander, arul spread on dishes. Place in the sunshine or a moderately heated oven until ncar ly dry. Sprinkle with loaf sugar, dry a little more, then pack them in boxes and put in a cool place. Citron must be boiled in clear water till you can pierce with a fork, and drained through a colander before it is put in the syrup ; then let it boil until it is clear. Pour boiling water on the lemon rind and let it stand over night before flavoring the syrup with it, and it can he dried with the fruit. SADDLE GALLS.—To prevent sad dle galls, the saddle should be lined with some smooth, hard substance. Flannel or woolen cloth is bad. A hard-finished, smooth rawhide lin ing, similar to those of the military saddles, is preferable. Then if the saddle is properly fitted to the horse's back, there will be no galls unless the horse isvery hardly used. Galls should be washed with snap and water, and then with a solution of six grains of copperas or blue vitro', to one tablespoonful of water, IN Lich will harden the surface and help to restore . the _ White hair growing on gall spots cannot he prevented. COST OF A BUSUEL OF WHEAT.- In 1868, says a correspondent, I had in four and a half acres. Yield, eighty-one bushels, i. e. eighteen bushels per acre. Labor and seed cost $50.64, or sixty-two' an& one half cents per bushel ; interest on value of land, tso—at ten per cent., twenty-seven and seven-ninth cent; per bushel. In 18691 had nine acres in wheat. Yicld, 19:2 bushels; wenty-one and one-eighth bushels per acre. Labor and seed cost i i t9B.- 44, or fifty-one and one-fourth cents per bushel. Interest added makes seventy-four and three-fourth cents per bushel. This did not pay and I stopped raising it.
