It is certainly high timetAbittla?mettOg be done to improve, our streets. There 'can be no difference of opinion about having the yolk commenced at once and . pushed along vigorously, - and there will be economy in having it wetland 'quickly done. Bat where, it may be ask . 44, should it be commenced ? The most feasible plan will be to begin at the sidej, neit' t pavements, establish the grades along and stomas the streetd, -mac adamize opt to where the turnpike Com pany are required to pike the road; and then compel that company and the Spring's Rail way Company tomomtolete their part of the work without any delay whatever. In this connection, it may not be improper to call attention also to the manner in which mac adatdizing should be performed. If large ' iron stones, generally called "nigger-beads, are.-dumpeci Into mud-boleti, even, if cover eff,v4th smaller Banes, they will sooner or later come to the surface and make this, like Jordan, "a hard road to travel." The proper way is to break the stone fine, as they formerly were, to "ring" size, remove the mud, then put down from eight to twelve inches thickness of this kind of ma terial, cover It with gravel or slate, and a creditable and durable improvement will be secured. Anything short of this will be only temporary repatring, and in a year or two the streets will be as bad as they now axe. The Town Council doubtless Under stand this fully as well - as other people, and if they have any regard fur their own credit and that of the place, they will se.e to it that the work of putting our streets in a proper condition will be promptly and well done. ' A TAX PAYER ORIGIN OF THE EVANGELICAL .ALLIANCE,--In September nest the "Evangelical Alliance" will assemble in the City of New York, and is already engaging the .tit ten tion of Religionists in different parts of the laud. Tile * public prints are also taking up the subject, and presenting to their readers etch facts as tney may have concerning the 6 hitory of the organization. • Thus the Pitterurg Oa idle of June Ilth,, in an article, says : ,"The •.Evangelical Alliance': was form ed In 1846. It is not fur us fix determine whether Dr. Balmer, of Soot, land, or Dr. Patten, of New York, is entitled to the honor of originating the A.ssooiation. It is doubtful whether the honor of originatins, the Alliance belongs-to either . of the distinguished men named by the gazet/A. The subject of christian union -had been discussed at an earlier date * by divibes in England and Switierland. But dotilitleas the earliest agitation of it was by Dr. Setunucker, of Gettysburg. This is frankly set forth in a pamphlet, enti tled 'Historical Sketch of the Evangelical Alliance," which was distributed among the men:there wbiist in session. at London in 18.16, and a copy of which we have now before us. It was prepared by Rev. Dr. King, of Glasgow, at the request of the Provisional ;committee of a preliminary meeting and unanimously adopted as a correct narrative of the origin and prelimi nary steps for the formation of the A.M. ance at London. After having mentioned the frequent injunctions of God's word to union among the followers of the Saviour, the.proz-ress of infidelity and popery as calling for greater activity among Claris tains, and alluding to the uncommon facilities for Christian union that the lead logs of Providence presented on the other hand, and that interesting ruoverneuts bad taken ploy:* expressly for the pn:uno 7 tion of brotherhood, the history proceeds to notice a few examples, In doing wajoa. -(on page 3,) it says ; "And to begin with the remotest—muoh praise is due to Dr. lictunucker of Ameri ca, fur his zealous endeavors to associate 'Christiana of different denominations across the Atlantic, and to cuticeutrate their efforts On objects of common niter e-t. Whatever may be thong= of Ain scheme Of union, aft Cu:Wiens must utt- Mire the„spirtt by . which it was Mewed, 'and rejoice in the practical good of which the 1.7.0P0844 amt afiacestnen of it Moe' been coalassed/y productive." From this it is evident, and it is a fact, that' the nindainentel principles upon whickthe_Evangellial Alliance is ba.sed, were first' presented by Dr. Schmucker, and whilst we bayeim desire to divert an iota of credit that may belong to others, it is only just that the same rule should be 'observed towards one acknowledged by the Alliance itself as first giving impulse to the idea of the association. It is, how evei, certain that at the organization of the American Brunel/ of the Evangelical Alliance in New York iu 1567, the Rev. Dr. Patten was the individual who moved that.tbe time had arrived to organize an American Branch Alliance, on the basis adopted by the Convention at London in 1846; of which he was a1..0 an active and influential member, and as were likewise Drs. Balmer and Schmucker. >- - THE WRATH ER.—For more Wag two weeks we have had an unusual amothat of rain in this section, the storms sometimes continuing for two and three days, follow ed by heavy showers every day, The sun occassionaily peeps out, with fair promise of clearing np ; but a few hours invaria bly bring back the clouds and rain. The - rains seem to have more frequent and plentiful in the central portion of the county, aroubd Gettysburg, than on the northern and eastern borders. Grass and vegetation generally are griiwing won derfolly, but we bear much apprehension expressed of injury to growing grain. While we have excessive rains, many parts of the country, and even of the State, are suffering from want of it. In New England generally there is much Complaint of protracted dkiught, affect ing severely all kinds of vegetation. The Cincinnati Commercial of the Bth inst., &hos spea, lts of the condition of thinga in Ohio : The continued drought over ;be greater portion of this 'State awakens extreme solicitude among the farmers for their crops. The drought tame, on at a time when the sprk4 crepe were just starting, and before they had taken root sufficient ly deep to drew other than, stirface mois ture, and there is a large belt of country wtere a drop of rain has not fallen in six weeks.
