SCHOOL MATTERS.— We are indebted to l!ar. WERT for a copy of the Annual Re port of the State Superintendent of Com mon Schools. It is an interesting docu ment, with sensible suggestions and rtcom meudations. Mr. WIOKIRSIIAM does not favor compensating School Directors or reducing the number. While admitting the evils growing out of threlection of in competent men, he thinks the wisest policy is to create an improved public sentiment that will bring into our school boards the hest men and t-nstain them in the measures they may see fit . to adopt for the good of the schools. The inequality in salaries of County Superintendents is referred to, and it is pro posed in future to regulate these salaries in proportion to the number of schools to be visited and the amount of labor tp be per formed, instead of leaving them to the arbi- trary action of triennial conventions of Directors. Oa the basis proposed, the sal ary of the Superintendent in Adams county would be $842, Cumberland $984, Franklin $1202, and York $l6ll. The aggregate number of Oildren in the State, between the ages of 6 and 18 years, is put at 975,753 ; of which 815,753 are at tending public schools, 85,000 in pritate schools, and 75,000 not "attending any schools. The value of school property In • the State is put 8t,48,488,867 ; in Adams coun ty $94,000, Crunberland4lB4,loo,. Fran kiln $154,660, and York $138,400. _ We gather from the reeport the following ,statistics In regard to Adams county. No man can hear Mr. Phillips sing without being not only entertained, but made better, as there is not only music but gospel in what he sings. Prom the Cincinnati CommentiaL Philip Phillips, the Binging-Pilgrim,has become a universal favorite wherever he is beird. Tns WEEKLY TRTERITZ of Jan. 5 contained the first es say. DISTURBING RELIGIOUS MEET INGS.—A young man bf the name of Ad am Seachrist was tried in the York county court last week, and convicted for. disturb ing a religious meeting on the 19th of March last,. in the church of the United Brethren, in Dallastown, that County. In order to avoid disturbance and confusion, during service, the trustees of the congre gation bad established a rule that ail per sons leaving the house before the congrega tion w 9,9 dismissed, should retire by a side door, with which fact Seachrist was well acquainted. Notwithstandiug, this, he in sisted upon violating the rule, and the noise and confusion occasioned by his leaving that night at the wrong door was such as to break up. the meeting. The True Dem .., 1 hes ~...0 J. Fisher, our presiding Judge, to the Jury, was such as to reflect great credit upon the bead and heart of that able and distinguish ed jurist. A. religious congregation has a right to make rules for the government of their services and the house in which Ithey are held, and arty person knowingly violat ing them, is liable to the penalty imposed by the Act of Assembly passed for their protection. &tsarist, in ,the case mention ed,• was sentenced to pay a fine of five dol lars, the costs of prosecution and undergo an imprisonment of Ahem days in the county jail. PUBLIC SALES.—The season for sales of Personal Property is approaching. A liberal advertising, of these sales always primes a good investment. It Is poor economy to save a few dollars, and thereby neglect to make the sale known as widely its possible. At tractive Bills judiciously posted - will do much to draw attention ; but there arehun dreds of farmers,,especially in winter, who who do not leave their homes and thus fail to see the Bills posted in Hotels and places of business. An idvedisement in the newspaper cstrries' home to every, family weekly notice of the sales and the kind of articles to by offered, thus attraellirg Many as .bidders who would otherwise not be present. The large circulation of the Bun & i3sarri- NIL in this and adjoining counties presents an invaluSble medial' at ariveiiiting these sales, the cost of advertising being but a trifle compared with the publicity thus given and the necessarily euhanoed prices, grow ing out of competitiOn in-bidding.
