AFFIRMED.—The case of GRANTILA*
vs. NEFLY, from this county, .has been
again affirmed by the Supreme Court; It
had been affirmed a year ago, but the Su
preme Court, on appltestion of counsel
for defendant, had granted a re-ailmment.
ACCIDENT.—On the 7th inst., a young
man named GLASS, hired with Mr. JESSIi
SHRIVEIt, in Huntington township, cut
his foot very severely with an axe whils t
chopping wood. The gash across the top
of the foot was four or five inches in length.

DIED FROM HEAT.—On Wednesday
last, as the team of BENJAMIN DEARDORFF,
of Franklin township, was coming into
town about noon, one of the horses fell
down from the effects of the intense heat,
and died shortly alter.
We learn that FRANCIS COLE, of the
same township, lost a horse from the same
valise on Tuesday.
BURNED.—On Wednesday last, the
oldest daughter of Mr. Join Ruep, of
this place, aged about G or 7 t years, while
in, her father's Steam Tanery, by some
means fell into a pile of hot ashes which
had been taken from the fitinace, severely
burning both her legs from the knees
down. Dr. C. HonNErt was called in, and
the little girl, although suffering much
pain, is doing-well.
SUN-STROKE.—We regret to learn
that Mr. HUGH Scow, formerly of this
Place, and more recently of Philadelphia,
had a sun-stroke last week while on a vis
it to some friends in Lewisburg, Pa. Be
ing in advanced age and impaired health,
the attack was a severe shock to his sys
tem ; so that 'although he had recovered
from the immediate effect, his vision and
mental faculties were, at last accounts,
seriously impaired.
OPPRESSIVE WEATHER.—The mer
cury having some ten days ago managed
to get above one 100', seems indisposed to
register anything below that figure. The
last ten days have been the most oppres
sive every known in this town, the the
moineter day after day, registering In and

it stood at 103 0 in the shade. Yesterday
opened fiereely, but a cool breeze sprang

.MOORE'S LIFE OF COLFAX.—We
have received a copy of this work, writ,
ten by Mr. Cotrax's pastor at home and
published by T. B. PETERSON tt Co., of
Philadelphia. It is a handsome octavo

its subject, printed and bound in elegant

CRUEL.—Some weeks ago a friend in
East Berlin ordered the "STAR & SENTI
NEL" to be sent, prepaid to Nov. 15, to
JOIIN SINNER. We notice in last Compl
ier, alcard Purporting to be signed by "J.
H. SENNER," compliining of the paper
being sent to him and declining to receive

or "J. H. Senner." The latter claims t o

and infer that this "card" was prepared
ter him by some blatant Copperhead, ant

expense. Sharp, but cruel.
REMARKABLE.—A littlo son of JEn-
OMIt MARTIN, aged 27 months, has been
afflicted for some 20 months, with frequent
tendencies to coughing and choking, especi
ally while eating, causing a good deal o r /
uneasiness tf:', the parents and often the I
cause of much distress to the child, but.
without any knov,•ti cause. On Tuesday of ,
last week, the child, while eating dinner, !
was seiied 'with a violent .Ct of coughing,
during which he threw up a flattened
piece of lead in the shape of a shield,
weighing 1.1 ounzes and Measuring ii by

a piece belonging to ono of the t24.ildren,
but which had been lost sight of for a tong
time. The littlo fellow must have been
playing with it when only 7 months old,
and got it in his throat, where it has re
mained every since, causing the coughing

SCHOOL MATTERS.—The Borough
School Board met on Friday night last,
and ro-elected Mr. J. U. WIRT Teacher of
School No. 1, and Miss MARTHA. Annms
Teacher of School No. Y. The selection of
Teachers for the remaining 5ch , ,015 was
postponel until Friday evening the 2ith
inst. Applicants examined Monday next.
We notice in the list of Permanent Cer
tificates granted by the State Superinten
dent, published in the July No. of the
School Journal, the name of LEVI CITRON
IRTFIR, or riampton,-21.,6....t.
The State Superintendent derides that
under the amended School law, all pro
fessional certificates except those issued
since the first Monday of June, IsrA,
ceased to be valid after the first Monday of
last month, June, 1865.
Directors should observe that they can
not continuo teachers in office or employ
new ones who hold such certificates gran
ted prior to the first Monday in June, l&,d,
unless they have subsequently had them
renewed or obtained Permanent Cortifi.
cater. The State appropriation might be
forfeited by carelessness in this particular.
The attention of directors is further
called to the fact that no Professional Cer
tifiicate is valid, of whatever date, unless
it shows, upon its, face that its holder has
passed an examination in the History
of the United States.
It should be borne in mind, too, by all
concerned, that Permanent Certificates
can hereafter be granted by the State Su
perintendent to those only who hold Pro
fessional Certificates valid at the date of
application. No others Deed be sent to the
Department. In renewing Professional
Certificates, it is optional with the Super
intendent whether he examines tho hold
ers or otherwise ;but in no case should
they be renewed without satisfactory evi
dence that they ate deserved.
By renewing a certificate, in the sense
of the law, is meant the granting of a new
one, not simply endorsing an old one.
A Convention of Stiperintendents will
be held In Harrisburg., commencing on
Thursday, the 30th of July.
The Annual Meeting or th Pennsylva
nia 'dtzte Teachers' Association will 1)2

GOING TO PIECES.—The disaffection
_among the conservative Democracy over the
New York nominations is rai)idly extend
ing, and bids fair to disrupt the party and
bring out another ticket. All the Washing

ment to this effect is on foot among promi
nent friends of Chase in Washington. _New
York and other cities. The Democratic
soldier element also talk of bringing out
Gen. Rosecrans as a candidate. It is already
evident that Seymour and Blairl will
to tool: to mes - tmon-pnre opperhead ete ment alone for support.
