THE CROPS.—Our exchanges generally speak of the favorable prospects for a large crop of grain this season. You eau see this oper ation very distinctly in . the perlisct isasot, by watching it with i milking They have no other mouth or means of tak ing food, either is the larva or winged state, The Ovipositor is a most curious Warn ment. It is about three•eighths of an inch long, of the size of a small pin, flattened at the point, and the whole making a moderate curve. It is compoied of a material very much resembling tortoise shell, of a dark reddish brown color. It is composed of three pieces ; a centre piece, which is the tube or duct, and two side pieces. The cen tre piece or tube, has a sharp chissel-formed point, with two sharp projecting points, one above the other, below the orifice, resem bling a fish's mouth. The two aide pieces are supplied with saw teeth on their edges, and to the centre piece by tongue and groove. In use, the centre piece is fixed firmly to the bark, and the two side pieces commence working up and down, first one and then toe other alternately, and thus the excava tion is made. All this, however, can only be seen with the aid of a powerful =qui- fying glass. On looking at the instrument with the na kod eye no such mechanism would be sus petted. The Musical Organs are also very curi ous, and difficult to describe. Directly un der the shoulder of the wing on each side of the chest there is a beautiful membrane, somewhat triangular, convex, and ribbed with bony ridges. The membrane mann- bles a small shell, and is stretched over a cavity in the chest, the lower angle connect ed internally with a strong muscle. On the breast there are two large scales, one on each side, firmly attached to the breast above but free below. On bending the body back ward these wades are elevated and expose two large cavities also covered with extreme ly fine and silken like membranes. These mvities are connected with those under the musical membranes under the wing and shoulders and probably serve for lungs.— When these cavities are filled with air the musical organs or membranes first described, are made to produce the sound by the large muscles; the :homey ridges of the mem branes being made to art on each other with -uch rapidity that the motion is scarcely perceptiblq. VIE FOUItTII.—No movement has been made to celebrate the 4th, in this place. We hear, however, of a number of Pie-Nice In preparation, :And the day will be observed in that way. JOHN ADatts had a different idea of the mode in which the 4th of July should 15 commemorated, from that which in these Later days obtains among some worthy peo ple, who have forgotten that they were once boys. On the day after the Declaration ut .
