= Ike, farmer nub #anstkeeper EELTERE bv THE TOMATO. Misery one who pleats a garden must have expprienceof the difficulty of dealing with to , +mews as usually grown ; they hug the ground 'With imeit persistence that nothing can keep them from it ; they rot both when it rains and when It does not rain; and at about the end of September they come to an absolute end of all production. The consequence is that most people choose to purchase such as the market affords, - and to pay for defective and unsatis factory tomatoes at a high price, • because an ordinary garden does not afford• room for Um., Having gone through an ample ex petience of this sort, I by accident attempt ed a mode or cultivation two years ago which has far exceeded my expectations in obvia ting the difficulties referred to, and In giving an ample supply of tomatoes so far superior to those marry sold as to bear no comparison .With them. This mode is a rigid training of the vines on a high wall—a wail acing south in my ease,: but one 'facing east I think will do ; while one facing north certainly will not do. - Strips of.lath nailed on post or stakes, say eight inches from the face of the wall, suffice to keep the vines within the enclosed , space, but they must also be frequently tied to the lath, or to halls driven in the face of the Some trouble is requisite while the are grow ing most rapidly, but it will repay all the trouble well ; being sure to keep the vines from falling or blowing doivn by whatever driving—tying or lath—may be necessary. I have had no serious difficulty in this re spect, nor will any one who ties the vines fr-rmently in July and August, using some ;:,,ft fax twine; or strong cotten strings. The result is that the vines grow -and bear from the earliest time that any can be p duood, until absolute freezing weather comes in November. I have had them in profusion and in perfection on the vines in two yeurs as late as the middle of November—the fall of both 1865 and 1866 being favorable as regards late frosts or the delay of absolute freezing weather.. And it is remarkable that the tomato plant under such circumstances con-. Unues to produce as abundantly to the last as could be desired, without check by any frost or chill that does not absolutely freeze the Tines. The fruit of the tomato is peculiarly an air fruit, requiring the fullest sun, and the most free circulation of air to pefect it. In the shade °riles!' the earth the fruit does not set, and if set, does not ripen. Under the best conditiOns for the vines in this respect the production is so much greater as to pay for all the trouble of attaining them, even if the wall or trellis were to be erected exclusively to _produce tomatoes. And those growing for marke,t purposes would be as well repaid as private cultivitors. I can count up already about eight bushels as the produce of 60 feet of wall,^ and but twelve inches of earth sur face at the foot in which they are planted, a brick wall three feet in width coming next ; the vines have in these cases ripened fruit largely at a height of six or seven feet; and the bearingleason has begun, or the produc tion of ripe tomatoes, about the 10th :of Au gust—Gardners' Monthly. AGRICELTUIL&L HORSE-RACING. Our readers will remember that as far back as ten or twelve years we took strong excep tion to the trials of the speed of horses at our agricultural fairs. As early as the exhibition of the United States Society, at Powelton, on the west side of the Schylkill, in which we took an active part, we objected to the extent to which the showing off of horses had been agreed upon. We predicted then just what has come to pea since, as to the result of these "agricultural races." Ever since that t ime we have steadly opposed the introdnc dun of Um= opetlal prrynuses rxr Vac owners of fast horses. For years the Germantown Telegiksph stood alone in this opposition. At last some of our cotemporaries uttered low murmurs as to the propriety of allowing horses to absorb so much of the time, atten tion and premiums of the different societies. Gradually these murmurs became louder, un til gaining courage they are now begining to speak, when the evil is full upon us, and our agricultural societies are dwindling away, in tones not to be misunderstood. They see dis tinctly that the thing is reduced to a single alternative, either horse-racing or agricultural exibitions are to go down. The substantial interests of the farmer must dominate every thing else. Gentlemen who desire to display their fast horses can have their own "tracks" and select their own time, and that portion of the community who have a taste in this direction can gratify it without detracting from the interest and usefulneas of our far mers' fairs. Of late we observe with pleasure that both State and county societies are moving in this matter. We have now room to refer to the action of the Ohio -State Societies only. The Executive Board of that society have come to the determination to make their ex hibitions purely agricultural and mechanical, and have voted to prohibit all trials of speed by racing at their fair next fall. The Prairie Farmer backs up this decision of the Board strongly. It says : "We are glad of the decision of the Society, for we can now hive the vexed question settled whether 'the people will support a fair without the usual attraction that has been offered by the nee-track. If they do not, then it remains to be seen tithe pastime cannot be stripped of Its disgusting and revolting features, and thus 1)e allowed to add its attraction to our fairs at say rate, we look upon the act of the Soblety as the beginning of a great reform in racing practices at oar fairs." .Thellast Pennsylvania SOciety, at Norris town, have conceded the that three dais of their future exhibitions exclusively to &gri ts:ducal and mechanical purposes. The Bucks County Society has always extended to the hone-display its proper positions. Those who were dissatisfied with this have, established a separate society in Doylestown. The Cheater County Society, while not forbid ding matched trials of speed, seta apart cer tain hours so as not to interfere with the sub- stantial interests of their exhibitions. We notice that other societies are moving to a ream In this monopolizing feature, and as the "bit" has once been fairly talc& we have reason to hope that this reform will reach every tanner's society in the Union before it is carbed.-_-(isermcmf.own Telegraph ;—Tea EARLY 4001;RICH POIATO. —Thb vari ety has been found to withstand the rot sue % oessfaily during the past year. when many other sorts failed wholly or in part. MeCONARY THIS WONwERTHL REMEDY wee discovered an Introduced about twenty years ago by Dr. 11.Cheop sus, an eminent Egyptian physician. He bad long seen Sad felt the want of some remedy which would strike at the root of disease. and so pre vent much of the suffering which the human family.waa thee compelled to endure. This great question was pro/witted tolls =lad every day In vivid colors as h• moved among the sick caddying, and observed the Inefficiency of Dearly all the remedies then in nee. Thus he was led to think acid experiment; and after ten years' study and labor. he presented to his fellow-man the wonderful Zingati Bitters. The effect of this preparation in the prevention and care of disease, was so cretevellour and astonishing, that the most Better log marks of royal favor were bestowed upon him whe discovered It. His name was placed upon the 801 l of Nobles, and a gold medal with the following inscription —Dr. B.Cheopau., the Public Benefactor—was presented to him by the Viceroy. The preparation has been used in 1 epidemic, of cholera, both as a preventive and curative measure, and with such great success, that it has been introduced late nearly all the general hospitals of the old world. The old saying that au ounce of prevention is worth a pound arms, applies with marvellous !ores to cholera, and therefore any remedy that will protect us against his terrible disease should be freely and persistently gird. AU pathologists now agree that tbecholera poison sets at, the spitem through the blood. and that any col:obis*. tine whicigacts on the excretory organs, and keeps them In yoking order, must p • sufficient acrossals t ion of the poison to exert itsterrible effects on the organism. This Is true not only of cholera, but of nearly all other malsdies, imperially the different forms of fever. The ?Jewett litters is just such a remedy as thsrabev• condition. require. It acts on the orgensof excretion sod secretion, keeping op a perfect balsas* betweea them. This Bitter& is composed entirely of root. and harts, so nicely concocted that every organ is acted upon ant put in tone. Its taste is pleasant and Its effecte prompt =diluting. Numerous cases of the following diseases have !us eared by It: Cholera, Maritima, Dventery, Scrofula, „Typhoid Dad Typhus Fever, Fever, Ague, Nervous De. bllity, Anaemia. female rre g latit Ise ,Dyspeicia,/lat u limey, Colic, Sc.
