There was a picnic near St rongstown on Saturday which pa-sej off pleasantly until evening, w hen the crowd was about leaving the grove. Luther, a uromiiieni farmer living near St. Augus tine, has been missing a considerable amount of corn from his crib, and one day last week he had occasion to empty the contents and lo his surpiise found a good silver watch, w hich was no doubt dropped by the thieves while "making a h.ml.'i Mr. Luther says that the owner of thu time-piece can have the same by calling at his place and proving property, but is rather doubtful whether the owner will call, and in all probabilities Mr. Luther will become the permanent possessor of the lost article. J'tittmi Cmirkr. On Monday of last week, Edna, the It-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Campbell, of HuOiuglwn, Indiana county, swallowed a coffee tcai w hich lodged in her wind-pipe. A local physician was called in but was unable to reach it and on Tuesday evening the child was taken to Johnstow n and placed iu the Memorial hospital, but thus far the physicians in charge have been unable lo gel it out hy ordinary means and iu all probability will have lo perform au operation. The child, thus far, has .suffered little from tin' ob struction other thin a himlranceol breath ing. Mrs. Campbell is with her child at al the hospital. Martin Watts, of Ferguson township, lost two valuable cows last week in a pe culiar way. Workmei: had been dyna miting stumps and having occasion to slop work awhile placed a couple of sticks of the dynamite w here they supposed nothing could get at it. lint two cows found il and between them ate the greater part of one stick, possibly half a pound. How long after they had eaten il tin y w ere found dead i not not known. There was some thing about the explosive that was a dead ly poison. Secretary of Agriculture Edge w ill is sue a bulletin this Fall devoted entirely to commercial fertilizers, their use, composi tions, value and practical results. Cir culars have lieen sent out by the agricul tural department to many of the leading and most practical farmers ;n the state asking them to furnish the result of their experience with fertilizers upon crops pro duced on their farms. The bulletin will be used for reference and as it will not be for advertising purposes no special brand or make of fei tilizers will lie mentioned. Each one who contributes to the bulletin will receive a copy gratuitously. Secre tary Edge is also preparing a bulletin showing the average price of farm pro ducts in the several legislative districts of th- stale. The dangers of the hay field took a new form iu Clearfield county a few d'tys ago, when Mrs. Fred Marshall, the wife of a well-known farmer at Luthersburg, was killed. Iein throw n at) feet in tin? air and over a high embankment. The wo man was assisting her husband to load hay on a wagon standing on a side hill. The wagon was tilled, and the long pole w ith which it was to lie bound was being fasten ed by Mr. Marshall. His wife, silting on the pole, helped him to hold it down. Suddenly the wagon toppled over, the pole catching in the woman's clothes. At the same time the man was thrown from his his position, and the pole, springing for ward, the woman, with teriflic force, shot into the air. She was hurled at least so feet, landing at the foot of the hill, ami died within a short time. Tuesday's Philadelphia Jlrrnnl con tained the following clipping: "Through purchase of a majority of the stock the Pennsylvania Railroad has secured control of the Altooiia, Clearlield fc Northern, extending from Altoona to Dougherty, a distance of fifteen miles. The road w hich was a narrow guage, was recently taken out of the hands of the receivers. The jrio.om paid by the Pennsylvania as its subscription to the unissnsed stock of the corporation enabled Messrs. Langdon and Patterson, the receivers of the company, to discharge all i;s obligations. Pennsyl vania railroad officials declined to stale whether thev would make the road a standard guage or w hat their intentions were concerning its future." In speaking of the dual the Philadelphia Time says: "Mr. Langdou secured the road for tin purpose of securing an entrance in Al toona fot his Philipsburg Connecting rail road, and it is said he contemplates an en trance into that ci'y by another route to be constructed." Wrevlt oh tit Hlch licit. On Thursday wlien the nwn train was on its way to Vintondale and near the curve at the big cut at Heulah. Engineer Zalim discovered several cattle on the track. The w histle w as blow n and the cat tie all scampered off but one which was struck and thrown under the wheels. The engine and two freight cars jumped the track and went bumping over the ties until the train was brought to a stand still bv the engineer shutting off the steam. Joseph Piper, one of the brakenien, re ceived a few bruises but was not seriously hurt. The passengers all escaped and Mr PilM-r w as the only one hurt. The wreck train was sent for and it took the balance of the afternoon to straighten up the track aod get the engine and cars on the rails. As a consequence of the wreck, there was no train left here at 3:30 i. m., and passengers for Cresson had to either drive over or remain in town. A man from Missouri has been success ful iu roiing in a number of farmers in the eastern part of the county. A stranger who claimed he ow ned a big stock farm near St. Louis, appeared and said he had a thoroughbred stallion on his farm in M issoiiri. which he valued at J.'J.Ono. His object was to have thu animal placed in this locality, and his idea was to form a tock company among the farmers so that the expense of bringing the animal here would not be so heavy. In a day's time nil the stock was sold. The stranger was not particular about being paid in cash. The farmers' note would answer. As that made the matter easier, the "long time" notes were handed over to the stranger. The blooded horse, the stranger assured the stockholders, would arrive the follow ing week.
