Every shred of his clothing was burned in an instant, and. being knocked down by the falling mass, he lay imbitlded ! In the cinder for a moment or two. until 1 able and willing hands came to his rescue, i It all occurred so suddenly and the ex- '' plosion that followed created such a panic ' that the men In their (light for safety for- i got there was a jMissibility of some one of their iiuiiiImt lM-ing buried under the mol- 1 ten mass. I'.ut instantly they lecovered . from their fright, and tlhough "ach man j had lieen seared with a spark of the living ! cinder, they devoted themselves solely to ' those or their fellows who were more ser iously burned. When Williams and Linn were approach ed they refused the services proffered, in sisting that all attention should lie first given McCuire. Everything that was pos sible was done by the management to al leviate the sufferings of the unfortunates, they having summoned the entire medical force of Homestead. I)r. (iladdeti, the company's physician, w as mou the-scene almost immediately after the accident, and rendered heroic services. It is the custom in the converting mill of the Homestead steel works to 'burn out" the el-" every Saturday. To "burn out" means to melt olT the accumulations of slag that have formed on the inside of the converters, and which are known as "sculls." The common practice is to pour a nuam it y of molten iron into the ves-cl and add limesionf-. and then turn the blast ou. by which action the cinder on the in side of the vessel is reduced to a sifthing. lidling mass of molten stuff, and is dump ed into a ladle front the converter. It was during such an opera t ion t hat t he accident occurred. Jacob Linn died on Sunday from the ef fects of his injuries. On M( -.inlay afternoon about two o'clock some of the employees in the woolen mill of Messrs. John Lndwig it Sons in this place discovered smoke issuing from some of the belt holes in the ceiling of the sec ond floor, and a hasty examination disclos ed the fact that a tire was raging on the attic. All hands at once went to work with buckets to fight the flames, and Met Liuhv ig mounted a horse ami -rode up through the tow n giving the alarm. The Dauntless lire company responded quickly and in a slioit time after the alarm had j their hose connected with the pl.ig in the , east end of town and two streams of water playing on the building. In the meantime the bucket brigade had lx-en lining noble work and kept the flames fr .in gaining much headway. Inside in the attic was all on lire, but as the fire was con lined, it ni lade but little progress for j want of air. After the streams from the hose commenced playing on the lire il was s n got'en tinder control and the building saved. The loss is not so great as w as ex pectiil but will probably reach l.noo. on w hich there was no insurance. The tire i- supposed to have originated from spontaneous combust ioii. as tin-re had been no fire atiout the building for some time. Where it originated a large quan tity of greasy wool and w aste was stored, and from that source the lire evidently or iginated. II o, tor The t.ipanllloa!
