A ,1IISS SOT A JEISS, Mrs. Dr. Walker, having occasion rtrent ly to pass up the Missouit rivtr, was inter view el at New Madrid by the editor of the Record, and in the Cuur.e of her couversatioti the Doctor lelatcd the following ibciJeut ot her war excellence iu Georgia: I frequently rode outside of our lines and visited tlie farm houses, where I found much destitution among the women. The ujtu were generally absent in the. Confederate army, or had tied at our approach. 1 ad ministered to a great many tick among thos-e destitute Georgians. On one occaai ju I cabled at the Louteofan old lady who was sick, and had quite a pretty young daughter liv ing wiih her. I prescribed for the old lady, aud furnished her whh medicine and some needed delicacies, aud gave her great and speedy relief. At her request I remained all night, and, there being no vaciint bed in the houve. slept with the daughter. Soon afterwards I was called upon to i-it a very (pick young man in the same neighborhood. By proper medical treatment and attention he was soon convalescent and I suddenly be came very famous in that neighborhood. Exaggerated accounts of my t-kiil aid learn ing were noised abroad, and reached the eais of th-t tld lady just mentioned. Not long after. I was overtaken by night outside tl e lines, and called upon the old lady for an other night's entertainment. To my sur prise she seemed reluctant and hesitating, and then said : 'Look here, I'm afeard of you ; I'm afear ed to let you sleep with my daughter Kgain, for I'm a feared you ain't a woman ; I don't believR any woman could know as much about doctori tig folks as you do." I tried to disabuse her mind of such an impression, but she only shook her head and said, "I'm afeared I'd rather not." At length 1 unfastened my hair, and, shaking it out upou my shoulders said : "Look there, did you ever see a man have such hair ai that? Is cot that a womau's hair?" "Oh, I don't know," said the old woman, folks has got a curious way of fastening hair on their heads in these days, and maybe it's jist fastened there. I'd rather not let you sleep with my daughter any more." I tried othr means with better success, and greatly relieved, tbo old lady again put me in her duu-htet'- bed. One of the Lost Tribes. One of the "lost tribes" has turned up, safe and sound, in the shape of a people called the Falashas, who inhabit a district in Abys sinia, which has long remained a terra in cognita and a blank space on the map-. They were visited by Mr. Halvey, a very intelligent French traveler, who lias now communicated an account of hi? journey to the French Geological Society. The;e were about 250,000 of the Falashas They speak an ague dialect called FaU ashina, or Kaillina, and into this lan guage they have translated a Gheez ver sion of the Old Testament. They do oot practice polygamy. They circumcise their male children on the seventh day. Their proper names are derived from his tory, Gheez, and Araharic' In the Syn agogues the sexes sit apart. Incense is burned during the services. Their reli gious hopes are turned to Jerusalem, but their idea of the Messiah are very indis tinct. They are wholly unacquainted with Hebrew, and know nothing of the ceremonies instituted after the time of Ezra. They have a religious literature written in the style of the Midralh.- They keep the Sabbath rigidly ; fast on Mondays and Ihursdays; keep the 6th of Ab to commemorate the destruction of Jerusalem ; they wash before and say grace after eating ; they have a tradition al mode or slaughtering animals for food ; they practice commemorative sacrifices on the holy days, and also for the repose of the sou's of ths dead. Their women enjoy equality with the men. They hold slaves, but liberate them lifter a servitude of 6i. x vcurB. And a GOOD THING in EBENSBURG. ROYALTY SUPERCEDED!
