□ □ When Enid Eloped By DOROTHY DOUGLAS □ □ Alice Dorset, slim, fair and within three years of forty, turned suddenly upon healing the click of the front (ate; then her face paled. A messen ger boy with a yellow envelope in his Irnnd was coming up the path. Mrs. Dorset Jumped quickly to her feet and hastened to answer the knock, not •waiting for the tardy appearance of the maid. "Something has happened to Enid— something has happened to Enid," kept running through her brain as she tore open the telegram with trembling fingers. Then she read: "Come at once. Am in very com promising position. Manor Inn, Elm ton. Enid." "Only compromised." Mrs. Dorset breathed a deep sigh of relief before she rang for the maid. "Emma, please pack my suit case," she commanded when the trim Etr.ma stood before her. "I must take a short Journey immediately." With haste, she could catch a train out, which would get her into the little station about ten o'clock that night. The drive from there to the inn would mean another half hour at the outside. Mrs. Dorset was thankful that Enid had choseu a place familiar to her, for an escapade. t Enid Dorset had been in boarding school for some six months and each hour of the past six months Mrs. Dor set had been in constant dread of her ■daughter's proclivities for getting her self into trouble. Enid, a beautiful sunbeam, reflecting the glorious beauty of her mother, seemed ever ready with a new entanglement for her mother's deft fingers to straighten. "Thank goodness, she's safe and sound what ever else has happened," was the thought uppermost in Mrs. Dorset's mind as she pinned on a dainty toque of mouse-colored beaver. Her eyes were gray and luminous be neath its shelter and her cheeks were ; —rri rip* 'j|j^ "Enid, Darling!" flushed with the haste of her move ments She slipped Into the pan-vel vet coat that exactly matched the hat *vnd was ready for the start. When the train drew into the station lit El niton, one other passenger alight ed. He was a clean cut, handsome boy with perhaps twenty-one years to his credit In the dim light (if the station plat form Mrs. Dorset observed that the boy ww met by a gentleman who de scended from a large, double-seated sleigh and she overheard their greet ing. "Ned, my boy—a--this is rather an awkward affair but It's Jolly of you to coino and help me out." The older man was plainly embarrassed, "I'm right at your service any time, j dad," the boy laughed joyously. "Do | we go to the inn?" "Yei>. I wonder If anyone els.' is I y.oing in our direction? In the true spirit of the country, ' lohn Allen looked about the station ; fid spied Mrs Dorset He approached In rand raised his hat. "Madam, can I be of any service to 1 >ou?"
