Thousands Driven From the Re gion ot Crows Nest and are Camped on the Hills. CKANBHOOK, CANADA, Auti. 4.—The most disastrous forest lire in the his tory of British Columbia is to-day sweeping like n tidal wave of flame to ward the Montana border. All efforts being put forth to check the onward sweep of the lianics seem puny'and in effectual. Wherever the fire fighters take their stand they are soon driven back from their positions by the great roaring and ever widening wall of flame. The vast Rochester timber tracts of the great northwest section are being consumed as rapidly as pine knots in a furnace and the timber loss alone is enormous. The flames are visible for a distance of fiifty miles. The survivors are ut terly destitute but outside aid for the sofferers is coming rapidly. The whole burned district is under strict martial law. Vancouver wired $5,000 for relief yesterday and sent a train load of sup plies today. A special dispatch from Winnipeg declares that the deaths will reach 400. Supplies of food and clothing are being rushed to the stricken region from Vancouver, Nelson, Oraubrook and Michel. The fires near Hosmer, Michel and Craubrook, which threat ened each of these towns, have ap parently been checked. For Sore Feet.
