Merrick as. sinned the duties of the office, ex-Gov Nash became worse, and at one tim< the doctors resorted to the most heroic remedies to keep him alive. To the surprise of his physicians, the former governor gradually rallied and recovered to such an extent that he was able to walk down to his office and attend to business. He remained very weak, however, but continued tn attend to his law business, having been a! his office on Thursday. EX GOV. GEORGE K. NASI Friday morning Mr. Nash arose late and went, to the bath room, when lie was heard to fall. Life was extinct when the famil\ reached the room. Ex-Gov. Nash was born in Medina county, Ohio, August. 14, IS!:.'. He at. tended Oberlin college, but left col lege before lie graduated, to cuter tin army. Afterward he taught school and studied law in Columbus. Ha edited the Ohio Stale Journal for a time and was elected prosecuting at lorney of Franklin county in ISTO. He was elected attorney general of Ohio in IST:I He was elected governor of Ohio in 1899 and in 1901, serving two terms. During the war of the rebellion ho served as a private in Company C. One Hundred and Fiftieth O. V. 1., of which the late Senator Hanna was the lirst sergeant. Gov. Nash leaves no family and his wife died some years a.uo. MUST BE NATURALIZED. Filipinos Who Wish to Vote in this Country Must Take Out Citizenship Papers. New Haven, Conn.. Oct. 29. —The registrars of voters here Friday twice refused to admit to suffrage J. R. I.agdameo, a Filipino student at the Yale forestry school. The registrars said that as i.agdameo was not native born it was accessary for him to be come naturalized before he could vote. I.agdameo claimed that as the I'nited States owns the Philippines he was a citizen of this country. Tiie matter was brought to the at t< in ion of Mayor Studley, who called up the atlornev general's office in Washington. Assistant Attorney General Kobb made this statement by telephone: "The supreme court of the I'nited States has held that a Filipino is not a citizen of the United States. Therefore if the law of Con necticut requires a voter to be a citi /.en he must be naturalized." Four Convicts Escaped from Prison. Jackson, Mich., Oct. 29.—Four con victs escaped from the slate prison here Friday. James Wilson was serv ing a seven -.ear sentence for burg lary, Edward MePherson ten years for burglary, John Cabo ten years for as sault and robbery, and Thomas Me Glynn four years for larceny. The four prisoners, with IS others, were at work on ain w cell block. Taking ad vantage of the noise made by ham mers used in riveting the steel ceiling, thi y climbed into ait attic and worked their way through the roof to the wall, liy means of a 10. foot rope that they had picked up they climbed from the wall to the railroad track. Sheriff Raided a High Toned Club. Washington. Oct. 29.—The Chevy Chase club, devoted to country sports and located* in Montgomery county, Maryland, across the disiric line, where local option is in force, was raided yesterday by the sheriff of Montgomery county. Several hundred dollars' worth of liquors were seized and the bartender was arrested. The latter was released, but the lirjuors were conllscatod. The club is made up largely of well known society peo ple of Washington, including mem bers of the diplomatic corps, supreme court and congress. Killed by Knockout Drops. Hon ton Harbor, Mich., Oct. 29. — Myrtle Smith, aged 2H years, is dead and Jennie Leaver is in critical con dition, the result, il is said, of knock out drops taken Thursdaj night while tiie girls were drinking with two well known young men of this city. The girls are waitresses in a hotel here and met the men at a dance. While in a drug store after, it is alleged, they had been drinking heavily, the girls became ill. Agents Refuse to Advance Rates.
