SLAWSON, aged 52 years, after an illness of over one year, died at the residence of H. G. Lyon, West Creek, April 18th, 1902. Funeral took place last Sunday, interment being made in Newton Cemetery. Rev. Pugsley, pastor of Baptist church of ficiated. Deceased came to this county about 1874 and has no relatives here, except an uncle, Mr. B. Ostrum, of Whittimore Hili. He was always a hard-working man and it is said that he would, and did, give his last dollar to help the needy and helpless. His last days were full of suffering and his great charity for his fellow man, we believe, will go a long ways toward his future happiness. «* lIELLYER. The death of MRS. ELLEN IIELLYER, last Sunday evening, from paralysis, at the homo of her daughter, Mrs. Theodore Haekett, was a sorrowful surprise to the community. About four weeks ago she fell down a long flight of stairs, sustaining injuries that culminated in creeping paralysis, that ended her life, Mrs. Hellyer was born in Monroe County, near the city of Easton, G9 years and six months ago. For several years past she has resided in Emporium with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Haekett, by whom with a circle of choice friends Iter loss is sincerely mourned. Of a retiring nature she was little seen by the world, but held in highest esteem by all who had the privilege of her acquaintance. Two children survive her, Mrs. Theo Haekett, of this place, and Mrs. Emma Leo, Delaware Water Gap. The funeral was held from her late home on Third street, Tuesday last at 2:00 p. m.and was largely attended. The Rev. O. _S. Metzler, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church conducted the servi ces, while impressive musical selections were rendered by tho choir of the church. Interment was made in New ton Cemetery. Killed a Big Blacksnake. Gazette and Bulletin: The snake sea son is opening early this year. Saturday afternoon Moses Sondheimer, the well known insurance agent, came across a six foot blacksnake on Bald Eagle mountain that seriously objected to being disturbed in its sunbath. The angry reptile threw itself into an ag gressive attitude, and with head erect and flashing eyes defied attack. When Mr. Sondheimer made a pass at it the snake showed a disposition to become the attacking party itself and started in to drive the insurance man off the side of the mountain. Fortunately, how ever. a well aimed or may be a chance stone, broke the ebony serpent's back, and the rest of the battle was easy. The snake measured a trifle less than six feet, and was a splendid specimen of its kind. Lumbermen Surprised. Williamsport Bulletin: Seth T. Fores man went up the river Wednesday to look after their upper river drive, known as the Flynn drive, consisting of 16,000,000 feet. ' Brown, Clarke & Howe's Sinnema honing and Kettle creek drives and the Flynn drives were all supposed to meet at Keating, there unite, and come through as one drive. On Mr. Fores man's arrival at Karthaus, however, he was surprised to find that Flynn's drive "hung up" Wednesday. Lumbermen hero are somewhat sur prised at his action, as a great deal more headway could have been made, easily reaching Keating. All agree that this is the lightest rear drive known for many years, and it should certainly have been driven a number of miles more. Ruling Upheld. The postmaster at Jasper, Mo., an nounced some weeks ago that he would no longer deliver mail between 4 and 4:30 p. m.to children going home from j school, because of the disturbance and : disorder resulting from a concerted ] decent of the "Kids" upon the post | office. One parent took exception to I this ruling and complained to the De j partinent at Washington, in the hope of compelling the Postmaster to set it aside. The Postmaster General, how ever, uphold the local representative. The ruling having been officially sanc tioned at headquarters will be perma ] nently enforced. Kindergarten Mothers' Meeting.
