faqufm. BEDFORD PA., FRIDAY. MAY 20, \m. LOCAL AFFAIRS. To the Friends of the Inquirer. Vt e are much encouraged by the kind and friendly words said for the INQUIRER by its friends. We have added eighty new names to our list, since the first of April. These names have been received without any concerted effort. A few gentlemen in different local ities have interested themselves in extending the cir culation of the INQUIRER. The results of their efforts convinces us, that if a concerted and hearty effort is made throughout the county, the circulation of this paper can be greatly increased. Wc are giving more reading matter than has ever been given in any other paper published in this county, and we shall continue to give as much hereafter. Our friends will under stand that it costs a good deal more to print such a paper than one filled with advertisements. There are more than a thousand good Union men in this county, who do not take the IVQVIREK, but who are abundantly able to do so. Every one of them ought to take their county paper, and as the INQUIRER in this case happens to be their county paper, they ought to take it. If the intelligent Union citizens of Bed ford county desire to make the INQUIRER among the best country papers in tho State, let them do their part, and come forward with a prompt and liberal support. The attention of persons owning Unseated Lands is directed to the Commissioners' advertise ment in this week's paper. Sick and Wounded Ponna. Volunteers. Information respecting Pennsylvania soldiers in the Hospitals of Philadelphia, mny always be had by application to Jos. PARKER, chief of the Hospital Commission, at the rooms of the Young Mens Chris tion Association, No. 104 Chestnut street. Internal Revenue Notice.^ The Assessor of internal revenue publishes a no tice in THE INQUIRER of this week, that the assess ment books of this county will be open for examina? tion until the 2Sth of May inst. Tax payers of Bed ford county will make their appeals in writing to THOMAS HUGHS, Esq., of Bedford. Professional. I. X. BOWSER, resident Dentist of Woodberry. will be absent from home for four weeks from the 17th of May. At the end of this time he will be home again, to faithfully attend to the duties of his profes sion. High M ater. We had heavy rains in this vicinity the latter part of last week. The streams were a good deal swollen in consequence. Ihe Raystown Branch wa3 bank lull. Denning's creek owerfiowed its banks. At Ritchey's and Bridaham's bridges the water was two feet over the road. The water rose, to the height of about six feet above high water mark. Travellers were obliged to pass down the east side to the bridge over the river at the turnpike crossing. Concerning Swine. James Kirboy, High Constable, against Capt. Geo. Smith. *s- Mr. Smith's hogs had been running at large in the Borough, in violation of a borough ordinance. On the 12th inst. Constable Kirboy seized and put them in the pound. On the same day Mr. Smith directed abov to open the door, which having been done, he drove the hops away. Mr. S. refused to pay the con stable fees. Constable "Kirboy brought an action be fore Esquire Nieodercus for his fees, and the case was tried on Wednesday. Verdict —Two dollars and c -s's against Smith. Moral —It costs something for hogs to break a borough ordinance. The. Enrollment. From nn offi<-'a! or ior, given in another column, it "w ill be seen that the Hoards of enrollment are requir ed to revise and correct the enrollment lists. The different Boards are required to appoint at once en rolling officers, who are to enroll all persons whose names have been omitted: such as shall arrive at the age of twenty years before the draft; alien who ahall have declared tbeir intention to become citizens; per sons discharged from the military and naval, and who have not been in the service for two years dur ing the present war; all persona exempted tinder the act of March, 1868, and not exempted under the act of February, 1864. The Boards of enrollment are required to strike from the enrollment lists, upoa satisfactory proof, the names of all persons who have arrived at the age of forty-five years; all who are manifestly physically or mentally unfit for the service; all who are now in the military or naval service of the United Stales, and all who have been in the military or naval service two years or more during the present war, and been honorably discharged. THE HISTORY or UOSTETTEITSSTOMACII HITTERS, The most remarkable medicine of the day, and the many cures tbat have been performed with it in case of Liver Complaint. Dispepsia, Nervous Debility, and other diseases arising from a disordered stomae or liver, places it at once among the most astonishing discoveries that has taken place in the medical worid. The diseases to which hitters &r$ applicable are fo universal that there are but few of our friends who may not test their virtues in their own families of circle of acquaintances and prove to their own satisfaction that there is at least one remedy among the many advertised medicines, deserving the public com mendation.
