AGRICPLTU B A From the Agriculturist. OKC(IAUi) AND MiiSEKY. Unless set out last month, the earlier the orchard is now planted the better, if it is to be done this Fall. In the nursery the busy season of selliug, taking up aud re-settiug small trees and shrubs f.till continue. Chcriies—Plant, both standard trees and any pits not previously used for seodings. Insects—Unless the borers were vanquished 1 ist month, attend to thou*. Foil directions have already been givcu. Manure, plow and subsoil, or trench, uuder drain if needful, and otherwise prepare grounds for Spriug planting, either as orchards or nur series. Spriug will b-ing with it sufficeot la bor oven when all is done now that can be. Mice—Do uot forget the mischief they have sometimes done. Avoid it t his season by clear ing grass aud weeds ft cm '.be truuks, banking up with earth, using Jitne or ashes, aud iu par ticularly exposed situations, cover a foot of the tree at the surface with closely fitting bark, oil cloth, or sheet lead. Where mice are abuu- Guut use poison , traps, or cats to thin their num bers. Nursery—Prepare early for Winter, aud uf trr the scason'of sales is over, go through with a plow and turn furrows towards tbe rows of trees thus opening drains to carry off surplus water. Now is a good time to transplant young trees from tbe seed bed to nursery rows. See that no mistakes are mnie iu seudingout trees: that they are carefully taken up, correctly la beled, and properly packed. Extra care in this re-pect will save you repetition, which is tho only guarantee of future success. Orchards of old trees should receive due at tention to prolong their usefulness as much as may be, or uutil the younger trees eomo into bearing. Scrape off the moss and rough bark, dig about aDd manure the roots, pruning the tops at a proper season and you give them a new iease upon life for which they will amply repay you. Quinces —Gather before freezing, and lay away ct refrlly if for keeping. Plant tre<\. Scions Cut at any time during the monlii, when not frozen, and buiy in dry earth, either out doors, or iu the cellar. Seeds of Apples, Pears, Quinces, Pi urns, Cherries, Peaches, and the various nu;s and hard shelved seeds—if not already in, plant, as directed l ist n.-uth. Tender .Sce.iir.gs, especially evergreens, need some protcctiiiu in the nursery. Sift iu dry sand to protect the stents, aad cover with forest leaves, straw, or evergreen boughs, for the first Winter. Transplanting generally, both in orchard and nursery, should be industriously prosecuted. CURING HAMS.—The slaughter of the pork ers Logins this month oo all well regulated farms, from Aroostook, to the farthest West aud South to Mason and Dixon's liHe, and only a little later farther South ; wo see the sleek beauties suspended by the gambrels, their open mouths biting the eob, from which they shelled the corn while living. The hams and should ers, destined for bacon, are liable to be spoiled in two ways—by too much or too little. Not one Lam iu ten offered in the market is proper ly cured for human food. Many persons put the hams in with the other pork, and spoil if.— Many of the recipes offered are too indefinite to he of any service. The following cures ba con fit for a king, or his eldest daughter. For one hundred pounds of ham take salt, ten pounds—Turks Island is Lest—six ounces of saltpetre, and two pounds of brown sugar. Mix the ingredients as evenly as possible and rub them upou the flesh side of the hums and shoulders. Pack the hams in a clean cask, skin side downward. Put a stone and board on top of the hams and nil up with clean cold water so as to cover them. In a few day 3 all will be dissolved and form a pickle just right. Rut (lie salt iu the solution is coutiuuslly sink iug to the bottom. Therefore, either chaugj the pickle—pouring it out and back sgain—or if the barrel is but partly filled roll it around a few times so as to stir the contents thorough ly, as often as cuce a week. The neglect of stirring the pickle, after it is made, spoils manv a barrel of hams. In six weeks will be cured just right. Smoke them ten days, to two weeks, in u cool stu.kc home. Put them iu Lg'.l cloth wrappers, white-wash the wrappers, and they will keep for years. This is our fami ly recipe, used for fourteen years, and always makes quarters of ham, that keeps the hotter half in constant good humor at meal time. GARDENING FOR LADIES.—Make up your beds early in the morning; sew buttons on your husbands' or brothers shirts, do not rake up any grievances; protect the young and tender branches of your family, plant a smile of good temper in J6f face, and carefully root out. all angry feelings, aud expoct a good crop of hap piness. _A® Irish fellow in Albany is going to have his life insured, so that when lie dies he CUD havo something to live on, and not be crpen deut upon tlie eold charities of the world as lie once was. THE GREAT PURIFIER <- THE WORLD CHALLENGED ! TRODUCE ITS EQUAL ! (TP-GLORIOUS TRIUMLIIANT ! Sworn statement of David McCrcary, of Napier Township, Bedford county : In April, 1856, as near as I can remember, a small pimple made its appearance on my upper lip, which soon became enlarged and sore. I used pohices of sorrel, ami a wash of blue} vitriol, with out effect. Finding the sore extending, I called on Dr. Ely, of Scbellstmrg, who pronounced it CAN CER, and proscribed a wash of sugar of lead and bread poultices. Finding these remedies of no avail, I called upon Dr. Shaffer, of Davidsrillo, Somerset count;, who also pronounced the disease Cancer, and gave me internal and external remedies —the latter consisting principally of caustic ; but nil to no purpose, as the disease continued spread ing toward the nose. I next used a preparation of arsenic, in the form of salve. This tor a time checked the disease, but the iufiamation soon in creased. 1 next called upon Dr. Statler of St. j Clairsvdle, Bedford county, who also pronounced j the disease Cancer, and applied a salve said to bo a [ never failing remedy, but it had no effect whatever ! in checking the spread of the sore. In December, lof the same year, th) disease had eaten away a greatei part ol my upper lip, and'had attacked the nose, when I went to Cincinnati, where I consulted Prof. R.S. Newton, of theElactic Medical College. He pronounced the disease "a cutaneous Cancer, superinduced by an inordinate use of mercury.— He applied mild zinc ointment, and gavu internal temedies. My face healed up, but the inffaniation was not thoroughly removed. In Febuary, 185 7 , he pronounced me cured, and I lett for home. In April the disease again returned and so violent was the pain that I could not rest at night. Late in May I returned to Cincinnati, and again placed myself under the charge of Dr. Newton, with whom I remained until September, daring which time he used every known remedy, and partly succeeded in checking the disease, but when I returned home there were still three disclnrging ulcers upon my face. I continued using Newton's preparations, and also medicine that 1 got from Dr. Ely, but the Cancer continued growing until it had eat off the left side of my nose, the greater portion of my left cheek, and had attacked my left eye. I had given up all hope of evei being cured ; since Dr. Ely said he could only give relief ; but that a cure was impos sible. In March, 1858, I bought a bottle of' Blood Scearcher,' but I must confess that I had no faith in it. I was very weak when 1 commenced taking it; but I iound that I gained strength day by day, and also that the ulcers commenced drying up. I continued, and when the third bottle was taken my face was healed as If by a miracle. I used a forth bottle, and I have been healthier since than 1 have been for tbe last seven years. Although my face is sadly disfigured, I am still grateful to a benign Providence who has spared my life, and which bis beet: done through the instrumentality of LIXDSEY'S IMPROVED BLOOP SEARCH ER. D. JOIIN CORLEY, J. P. NEW EVIDENCE. Being afflicted with a grievous "Tetter on the anas and face—after trying many remedies which utterly failed to cure— l was persuaded by \Y. M. Barris he Co. to try Lindsay's Improved Blood Searcher; and now, six weeks after finishing the second bottle, pronounced myself cured. The tetter broke out, something over a year ago, on the inside of my arms, extending from the el bows down to the wrists ; also, on my face, im. mediately round the mouth and ciin, and continued to be a perfect torment to me until cured by the Blood Searcher. My anus, were almost useless, owing to the cracks and sores on them, liable to hloed at any time on the least exertion to lift or work, and sometimes so itchy that I could scarcely prevent tearing off" my flesh. I have now been cured six weeks and feel it duo to Mr. Lindsey, and to the public generally, to in ike this statement, in hope that others like myself may be benefitted by using his valuable medicine. her JAM-; # WILSON* mark Sworn and subscribed before me, one of the Al dermen in and for the City of Pittsburg, this 28tn day of July, A.
