THE DAILY EVENING TELEGR APE PHIL ADELPIIU, TTOjoaY, MAY 1G, 1871. MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC. "The Streets of Philadelphia" nt tlio AVnlnut. The drama produced last night at the Wain at, to a very fair audience considering the attrac tions in the streets of Philadelphia, which for many surpassed those of tho mimic stage, U one that has the happy faculty of adapting Itself to circumstances. It has been played here many times indifferently as representing life in Philadelphia or in New York, as the sUgo managers happened to be romantic or practical. If they thought the poet's maxim true, that distance lends enchantment to the Tiew, they named it The Streets of Xeto York; Tve believe that it was originally brought out a good many years ago under the name ot The Streets of London, it being in some sense an adaptation of a piece which figured in the ori ginal French under the title of The Streets of Paris, or if desirous to appeal to local patriot lam, they boldly posted it as The Streets of 1'hi lalelJiia, and diligently revised tho dialogue to eult circumstances. Such a piece as this is of course invaluable, for it could, by means of a little practical ingenuity, be relied upon equally as an attraction in Pekin as in New York or Philadelphia. It is a piece that does not de pend upon any of the finer elements of art for success; there are no half tints, but the contrasts of light and shade are made as distinct as pos sible, eo that it is impossible for the most ob uae intellects to miss tho meaning of the plot, or fail to understand the obvious moal Involved in the failure of vice aud the triumph of virtue. Looking at it from the proper standpoint, the play possesses very decided merits. It tells a story of considerable interest: it presents a number of well-contrasted characters which enable the actors to make eonie telling points; its moral tendencies are excellent, and it affords opportunities for attrac tive scenic display. The applause with which the performance at the Waluut last evening was greeted was a proof that tho drama has lost none of its attractions, and its reproduction may be considered a success. The best acting part is that of "lorn Badger," the clerk and the evil genius of the defaulting banker "Bloodgood," and this found a fitting representative in Mr. Walcott, who made the moat of the opportuni ties afforded him. The other characters were for the most part creditably sustained. The piece is well put upon the stage, with several new local scenes which are effective. "Nohody's Daughter" at the Arch. Miss Kute Keignolds was greeted last night at the Arch by a tolerably large audience, and gave pleasing personations of the three characters of "Jenny Milson," "LadyEversleigh,"and ".Yiad'lle Brewer." The drama of Nobody's Daughter by Messrs. Fulton and Maeder, belongs to the class known as "sensational," and while there is nothing in it sufficiently soul-harrowing to make the hair of nervous persons stani on end like quills upon the fretful porcupine, it con tains in its involved plot and picturesque tab leaux a fair amount of matter of interest to those whose tastes incline them to this style of entertainments. Miss Kate Keignolds, who has not appeared here for several years, is an actress of prepossessing stage presence, but with almost too placid a style of acting to do justice to such characters as she is called upon to repreeent In Nobody's Daughter and other similar pieces of her repertoire. She has excel lent abilities, however, and in some of the scenes in which she appeared last night she was generoufaly applauded. The City Amusements. At the Academy of Music the spectacle of The Black Crook, with its innumerable attractions, will be represented this evening. This being the German jubilee week, and also the last week of The Black Crook, the prices of admission have been reduced, and at the present popular rates every one can afford to see this elegant entertainment before it closes. AT the Waluut the drama of The Streets of Philadelphia will be performed this evening, At the Akch Mies Kate Keignolds will ap pear this evening in tho drama or Jsoboay s Daughter. At the Chbsntjt a performance of the comedy of Saratoga will be given this evening. At the Museum, Ninth and Arch streets, Mr. Robert McWade will personate "Rip Van Winkle" this evening. A matinee performance of Uncle Tom's Cabin will be given to-morrow. At the American the Japanese troupe appear this evening, with other attractions. The Italian Opera. We have had very little oDera this season, and the series of per formances to be given at the Academy of Music nest week will doubtless receive the patronage they deserve at the hands of our music-loving public. ine reperwire cumams wum of well-established reputation. and the combination of artists, with Miss Clara Louise Kellogg at Its head as prima donna, is Bumclently strong to ensure creaitaoie repre sentations of the various works announced.
