THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH I'fllLADEiiPHlA, MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1870. 5 FIl'SICAI. ANWDBiiMlTlU. The nelhva rlt? Cfenrert. The concert Riven on Saturday evening at the Academy of Muslo by the Beethoven Society, la honor of the centennial anniversary of Beethoven's birthday, was worthy of the occasion. The, pro gramme was admirably arranged as an exhibit of the varieties of the composer's style, and the differ ent selections were rendered In sach excellent s'ylo that we have little bnt praise to utter In regard to the whole performance. The Beethoven Society Is composed of some of the most talent ed and accom plished am ateurs In the city. The chorus singing on Saturday was very much above the average, both in aocaracy and expression ; and it was credit able both to the society and Mr. Carl Wolfsohn, the musical director. The chorus, "The Heavens Proclaim," the famous quartette from Fidelia, arranged as a chords, and the "Hallelujah Chorus," were all given In very superior style. The quartette was encored, as It dsaerved to be, but beautiful as was the result, the propriety of arranglrg this number as a chorus Is doubtful, as much of Its value depends upon the characterization of the different parts, and Its dra matic expression, which are of course lost when It ts sang by more than tho four voices for which It Is Intended. The overture to fiymonf.'whlch appro priately opened the performance, was flnely per formed by the orchestra, and the orchestral accom paniment to the other numbers in the programme was more than usually excellent, Mr. William Stoll, Jr., who has been steadily making a line reputation as a violinist, performed the first move ment, the concerto for the violin the only work of this class that Beethoven ever produced in a very superior manner. This Is much the most dlfllcult and elaborte composition that Mr. Stoll has yet attempted in public, an the excellence of the performance was snoh that It will do much.to advance his reputation. The scena and aria, "Ah Perfldo," was sung by Mm. Gibson Pea cock with flue drnmatio expression. This lady(has a Tlch and powerful voice and an admirable method, and a slight nervousness alone interfered with the entire success of her performance. Few singers unaccustomed f appearing la public, however, CJuld have executed such a dlfllcult composition In an equally brilliant style. The trio "Trcmate emp'j Tremate," was very finely given by Miss Clara Lauderbach and Messrs. E. Dil lingham and G. A. Coaly. Miss Lauderbach has a very sweet, sympathetic, and cultivated voice, which was heard with admirable eirect, and both in style and execution her slngiog was very far above the average. Messrs. Dillingham and Conly are both gifted with fine voices, and performed their parts In the trio in excellent style. The "Chorale Fantalsie" was fairly rendered by Mr. Wolfsohn. The orches tra and the chorus, and the "Andante" and "Finale" of the O minor symphony were performed with unusual precision and accuracy. The whole entertainment was decidedly oue or the most suc cessful of Its class ever given In this city, and Mr. Wolfsohn, who has labored con amore, is entitled to great credit for the high state of discipline to which he has brought his forces. With such a beginning as it has made the success of the Beethoven Society may be considered as assured, and it will undoubt edly do much to cultivate a taste In this city for the higher fotms of musical composition. - The Vltr Amiineraenta. Atthk C'hesnct Romeo and Juliet will be per formed this evening, with Mrs. Scott Slddons as "Juliet," Mr. Charles A. Thome bs "Romeo," and Mr. Davenport as "Mercutio."
