Ti IK DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, AUGUST G, 1870. 3 IN THE WOODS. The Or-rnn f.'rnve 1'mnp. trerttn Popular iiBri Hueceaniul KnlrrprleC. Frvr i Occasional Qorrtepondent, Long Branch, N. J., Ang. 5. Ve have just arrived from the Methodist camp-meeting about seven miles south of thin place, 'and, with the permission of the editor of The Evenino Telkobaph, will von tnre to give the readers of your exoellont journal boiuo information in regarj to what we Raw end heard. But, first of all, permit nn to describe the grounds. They are admirably adapted for the pnrposo intended. The tract purchased by the association cewprisos about two hundred acres of land, the greater part of which is covered by & beautiful young growth of pine and oak timber, making a beautiful shade. North and south is bounded by lakes of pure fresh water, each of which is about half a mile in length, and averaging perhaps three feet deep. On the east roll the waves of the blue Atlantic Ocean, the waves whereof send forth ceaseless To Deutns of praise to Him who bids them roll. A remarkable feature of the ground is that water sweet and cold can be had anywhere by sinking a pump a few feet. We have seldom tafcted better water on a camp ground. The association .have had the plot laid out by a competent corps of euineers into wido avenues, spacious parks, and beautiful streets. A thousand lots JO feet front by ;0 feet deep are marked on the plan, and these are offored on a lease of !'!) years for the small sum of 7.1. The design is that Christian people, who desire the luxury of a seaside home without the dissipation and costly pleasures of a fashionable vatering"place, shall here come, build cottages, and occupy them asj and for as long a time as they please. We learn that already nearly 400 lots have been taken for this purpose. Some of the best Christian families in your city, New York, Newark, Trenton, and many other places are among the number of the lot-holders. The sea bathing is not more than about a Hqnare from the preacher's stand, and cannot be surpassed by any on the Atlantic coast. AH who have seen the grounds are delighted, and embrace the idea and pronounce it just the thing. It will doubtless prove a delight ful summer sea-sido Christian home. The meeting, which closed formally to-day, was a gratifying success. The preachin in the general was excellent, being plain, pointed, and practical. Tho meetings were free from any boisterous exhibition, but were earnest, solemn, and spiritual. Very ranch of a family feeling and home comfort seemed to permeate the minds and hearts of all. During our visit we saw nothing and heard nothing from any one which was not in the highest degree moral and religious. It was a happy place. Ilev. E. II. Stokes, Rev. Geo. Hughes, General ltusling, llev. Mr. Osborn, and others of similar character axe prime movers in the Ocean Grove project. "We feel safe to predict for Ocean Grove a magnificent future. Everything that can be desired in a first-class seaside home is found there, and the facility with which it may be reached in about four hours from the city by the Camden and Ainboy and New Jersey Southern Hailroads, and a beautiful stage travel of six miles, renders it sufficiently con venient for all. CJIty A Hair. The Faculty and Board of Trustees of the Hahnemann Medical College held a meeting yesterday afternoon, and adopted resolutions expressive of their regret on the death of Mr. Norton, late president of the college. Shortly before 2 o'clock this morning fire was discovered in the frame building, No. 227 South Fifth street, ooenpied by George M. Freid, dealer in corks. The damage wa principally in the upper and rear portion o the building. The names were soon extin guished. The only aldormanio fines paid into the City Treasury thus far for the month of July laBt are the following: Thomas Dallas, $37; "William Neill, !$4G; William It. Heins, $40; A. II. Shoemaker, $32; Charles M. Carpen ter, $45; J. II. Massey, $34, and Charles E. Pancoast, $5S. The Board of Aldermen met yesterday, and elected canvassers for the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh wards. An order has been issued by the Chief of Police directing the police to act subservient to and assist the firemen during time of fires. Mrs. Frendeville, who was injured at Cape May on Thursday, has since died. Domeatlo Affair. Gold closed yesterday at 121 J. Mexico sympathizes with Prussia. Mr. Frelinghuysen has not yet accepted the English miusion. "War between San Domingo and Ilayti is stated to be imminent. Two horse-thieves were lynched at Puebla, Colorado, on Thursday. Friends of General Lee deny that he ever ottered bis services to franco. Two heavy robberies of diamonds have recently occurred at Long Branch. Four men are under arrest in New York on suspicion of being implicated in the Nathan murder. The President is said to be indisposed to call an extra session of Congress until new reasons should arise. TUE WAR. TI1IS MORNING'S DESPATCHES. THE SAAELOUIS HOAX TUB QBEAT BATTLE AT THAT POINT NOT YET BOUGHT PKU8SIAM EE- JOICINGS OVEB THE VICTORY AT WEIS8EN- BUBG. ' London, Aug. B. The report that Saar louis had been taken by the French, after a brilliant engagement, proves unfounded. The report came from Paris, and is contradicted by a later despatch, which says there has been no fighting as yet at tnat point. It is understood that England has deter mined to make invasion of Belgium a couh MIL The King of Belgium will summon the powers who have guaranteed his neutrality to Lis assistance if his territory is invaded, and England will respond. I.ndon. Aucr. 5 fSDecial to N. Y. Herald, A special despatch from Hozeman, of to day's date, says the defeat of the French at Weiaaenburg was disastrous. General Douay's tiiviftioo, composed of pUAe4 wen, wua utttxl routed, and several of them have reached here In a demoralized condition. Weissen burg is in possession of the Prussians. A general advance here and at Saarlouia id ex pected. Fhankfort. Ang. f Noon. A train has just arrived here bringing 500 French pri soners from Weissenburg. They will be sent to Northern Prussia. The total number of prisoners captured by the Prussians was 800, including eighteen officers. Beblin, Aug. r. Dense crowds assembled to-day in front of the royal palace, to whom the King's despatch announcing the victory of Weissenburg was read by order of the Queen. Great enthusiasm prevails. Tho buildings are generally covered with flags, and there is to be an illumination to-night. Subscriptions to the war loan already ex ceed $12"), 000, 000. The substantial fruits of the Crown Trince's victory are the destruction of one side of the French quadrilateral and the cutting oft of McMahon's corps from its northern connec tions. Madhip, Aug. r. Journals here have been prosecuted for publishing false despatches from Taris announcing tho defeat of the French at Saarbruck.
