The marvellous de scriptions of external nature, in all its moods and caprices, that abound- in Charlotte's works, above all, that sense of the subtile sympathy between it and the human, are no mere trick of style, no' fictitious blazonry of adjective and rhetoric. The novel of -to-day deals largely with "natural descriptions. But they seem often . placed there for effect sake like a pretty plant trained artfully to a garden lattice, rather' than a wild vine of the woods, trailing with native grace from the rough, strong . branch to which it clings, the free wind tossing its leaves, and the sunlight glinting through.. Sky and heather, sunshine and storm, assume in her stories the import ance of living characters; they are' intrinsi cally a part of the plot and progress of the romance, as they were, indeed, a part of her life. Do you not remember that scene in the garden of Thornfield ? Her beloved master has just Psked Jane to become his wife, and she has .promised to be his forever; the cup of her happiness is full and running over. In the sky of her hopes all is bravery and sunshine, when suddenly, iu the midst of Rochester's passionate talk, like a portentous thunder-clap, comes the passage: "But what had befallen the night ?" The ' moon was Bot yet ret, and we were all in shadow: I could scarcely see my master's face, near, as I was. llourt at JJovie. . . MARINE TELEGRAPH. For additional Marine A'sumses Fbrnt Fade. .
