THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, MONDAY, MAY 0, 1870. 5 ftvm Our Own Qrrrpfirru. Nw York, Msy , 18T0. PaaKeraa Hotel. Hw many of the hundreds of hotel iraesls who wend their war im elevators to bed-rooms n the jQftli, sixth, seTenth, or eighth story brood on their way up on the chances of a fire during the night? How many of them satisfy themselves that there is a fire escape t now many of them are perfectly certain as to their being a satisfactory number of buckets? now many of them bestow a thought upon the engine and the hose ? And is there a traveller that car rles a rope-ladder in his valise? Yet a few such precautionary thoughts and paias as these might ho well, for the hotels of New York are poorly off in respect to all the artifices by which fire may be extinguished or escaped. Without mentioning the Inferior hotels, which are scarcely better provided than base ment houses in this respect, those of Broadway are alone quite sufficient to make their guests dread going to bed. Committing oneself to re pose under euch circumstances seems scarcely better than committing oneself to the flames, and the arms of Morpheus and of the Ire-fiend become almost identical. Empty Ilaanra. The May-moving horror being over for another year, it is fair to calculate that the houses now remaining empty will remain so until that year has expired. The avarice of those landlords who would rather see their houses remain empty on their hands than re duce their rents, is exemplified la the fact that there are a larger number of empty houses now In New York than at any corresponding season from which data have been taken. In Clinton place, for instance, there are 10 empty ones; in Amity street 8; on Fourteenth street, between Fifth and Seventh avenues, 2; in Nineteenth treet, between Fifth and Sixth avenues, 4; In Varick street 12; la West AVashingtoa Square S; in Irving place 3; in St. Mark's place 6; in Orchard street 13; in Tenth street 5; in Eleventh strset 8; in Twelfth street 6; in University place 4; in Macdougal street 7; in Vandam street 8; and in the same ratio all over the city. AaiassBiontn. Mr. Fechter is going to play "Hamlet" again, probablr for one week. He evidently don't care for the critics, or prides himself on seeming not to. Even his admirers amongst them seem to have come to the conclusion by this time that he is not an intellectual actor, and that histrionic genius is not to bo conceived of as existing apart from intellect. Senator Revels lectures here on Wednesday. I nave heard it Bald that this gentleman used to be a clergyman. I hope not, for in these days of Good Samaritan se ducers, gin-and-milk thump-the-cushions, and pulpit frauds in general, that circumstance would not of itself be in his favor. That unique exhi bition named "Mrs. Jarley's Wax-Works" is to be brought out to-morrow night, at Stolaway Hall, tickets two dollars each. A lady adver tises herself, without giving her name, as "pupil of a celebrated elocutionist," and promises that he "will lecture in New York during this month. Subject "Poetry." I hope she will have large audiences, her claims are that enor mous. Mr. Grau, that polyglot lmpressario, has got a sensation at last. It is the German trage dienne, Madame Marie Niemann-Seebach, who, he says, will give one hundred performances in this country, commencing next September. The salary is not stated, but perhaps it was so enor mous that Mr. Grau was afraid of awakening the anxieties of the public with respect to there being nothing left for himself. Mr. Clark pro duces Mr. Stockton's play of Fox vs. Goose next Monday night. This U the first time that cul tured writer, Mr. Stockton, of the Morning Post of your city, bo's been represented upon the stage of New York. Miss Kellogg is to attempt ''Leonora" for the first time in public on next Monday evening. This is everything that is new among amusements at present. Choristers mad Christiana. I do not propose to suggest any question as to the right or wrong of choir-slnglng in churches. Some congregations so decidedly object to it that they do all the singing themselves, and "shut down" on musical professors of all grades. At other churches the chants, intonations, and solos absorb by far the greater interest In the services, and the semon is merely endured as a necessary evil. This is especially the case in New York. A large proportion of the choir singing Is done by Italian opera artists, who are paid high salaries, and discharge their profes sional duties as though they were behind the footlights, and eager for an encore. , If they can do this, and at the same time make their peace with God, that is a good thing for them. They certainly cannot complain that Providence does not behave towards them like a gentleman. But now our fashionable churches, where Italian 'opera singing is carried to the furthest stretch, are beginning to complain of the trifling and chatter which these godless artists too often keep up among themselves during the pauses between the music. It Is the old dilemma of propitiating the God with the man, and yet sat isfying the Mammon ! An Baba. ) CITY ITU TIM. All Prices Ouabaxteed Lower, than the Lowe.it i'mrArt',.
