Testimony was taken. The gradnatesand students of Dickinson College met last evening, and formed an asso ciation, to be known as the l'hiladolphia Dick inson College Club. The alarm of fire last evening abont half past nine o'clock was caused by the burning of a stable attached to the Ashland House, Arch street, above Seventh. A meeting of the Notaries Tublio was was held yesterday afternoon for the purpose of taking measures to oppose some legislation whieh it is asserted is about to be attempted at llarrisburg, depriving notaries public of tho right to take acknowledgments of deeds, etc etc. Mr. William O. Moorhead's large granite building, on Walnut street, above Sixteenth, formerly the IJutler property, has been sold for f 80,000 to Mr. Henry C. Gibson. The late B. M. Jones' property, Walnut street, below IJroad, adjoining the Dundas estate, and fronting ,TJ feet on Walnut street, has been sold for $i0,0(H) to II. M. Phillips, Fq. Last evening the Finance Committee had Tinder consideration the police appropriation for 1870, and agreed to report it to Councils. The school bill was also considered, and the item of $10,000 for musical instruction was retained. The committee refused to agree to the proposed increase of the salaries of teach ers, and as thus amended the bill passed. The fourth annual meeting of the Mana gers of the "Boarding Home for Young Women," situated in Lombard street, above Broad, was held yesterday afternoon. The name accommodates thirty-three boarders, which number has been in the Home daring the past year. The demand for admission during the season has been so great that, al though the managers fe9l encouraged in their work, yet they nave been obliged to ret use admission to some who need the sacred sur roundings of a homo. At the regular meeting of the Board of Guar dians of the Toor held yesterday, the House Agent reported the census of tho Almshouse for the past week at 3707, a decrease of 155 as compared with the same time lost year. State Auditor Wyckliffe, of Louisiana, is to be impeached by the House upon charges of mol-administration, bribery, fraud, etc, The Spanish Consul at New York pub lishes a despatch, stating that the Cubans were badly defeated at Goiamaro by General Puello. An act has been passed by the Tennessee Legislature granting aid to the Mediterra nean and Oriental Steam Navigation Com pany,with a view to promote emigration from Southern Europe direct to boutuern ports. A decision has been rendered by the United States Supreme Court in the case of Frank LSI air, in which the sovereignty or a State in respect to the right of suffrage is aihrmed. The court was not unanimous. Gonzalo Castanon, editor of La Voz de Cuba, Havana, who arrived in Key West the other day for the purpose of challenging the editor of the Jiepublican, of that city, was assassinated yesterday by some Cubans. In the United States Senate yesterday, after the close of our report, the Currency bill was taken up, and Messrs. Morton and Sumner withdrew their amendments. An amendment was then adopted yeas, 43: nays, 12 allowing a bank located in a State having more than its proportion of circulation to be removed to any State having less than its proportion, provided the amount of issue of said bank shall not be deducted from the amount of new issue provided in this act. Mr. Morton moved an amendment making the increase $52,000,000, and Mr. Chandler one making it $100,000,000. Mr. Chandler's amendment was rejected, and the Senate ad journed, with an understanding that the bill would be voted upon to-day. la the House Mr. Ingersoll offered a resolu tion, directing the Banking and Currency Committee to report within six days his $44,000,000 additional legal-tenders bill. The House refusing to second the previous question, the yeas being 43 and the nays 1 1, the resolution went over. Mr. Marshall offered a resolution declaring that the con atitutional authority to levy taxes does not include the power to impose duties except for the collection of revenue, and directing the Ways and Means Committee to report a bill accordingly. Mr. Kelley moved to table the bill, when the morning hour expiring, it went over. Mr. Fitch of fered a resolution giving belligerent rights to Cuba, which was referred to the Foreign Committee. Mr. Cox desired to offer a reso lution looking to the repeal of the tariff on coal. Objection being made by Mr., Cessna, he moved to suspend the rules, but the House, by a vote of 75 to 21, refused o sus pend them. Messrs. Oonger and MeKenzie, members elect lroin lrginia, were sworn in. Mr. Scofield introduced a bill authorizing transfers in navy appropriations to the Bureau of Construction, which was referred.
