THE DAILY EYENINfl TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 18G5. i . Graves of Ancient Britons. tXTEKBSTlKO DIbOOTBRlKS IK TUB TOBKilirBB TUMULI. A letter from Malton, Eoglanl, says the folentiflo investigations among the graves of the ancient Unions, wbioh, at Interval, for three year Pt hare beeu carried on by the Kt. Canon Green wall, of Darbaui, and other archBolopists, npon the Yoiksuire Wold, have been'resnnieol, and are occasioning maoh Interest. Two large barrows have been ex amined, both of which have proved prolilli iu remain", and hive yu-lt-d rnsalts of a valua ble nature, tome of whijh have hi.Urt not len previonr-lj obaerved. The details of tlese discoveries: are hrlelljr theae: Harrow No. 1 was (ill iVm iu diameter aul 2 fet high, lortned of eattli and chalk rabbU. Six feet south of the ventre an uuburnt boi, contracted and laid ou the lilt aid, wa4 foau 1, the head being to the south, aud both Inula up to the face. ThU burial wat upon tie batnral rtirface of the ground. Three feat sorih of this was a burnt boijr, the boom cutting a round Imap 10 luo through, aui 8 incbt-s above the natural aurftite, a later introduced bnifal, among the bones bsing tw pieces of a funeral urn. At 0 test eombea-tt of the centre, also ou the natural aurfane, wi tbe body of a young pert-on on the right ci l-t, With tbe head to the west; aud at 9 feet west of tbe rentre was a et-ojud burnt bjJy at the Same level as the first. 'J be grt at dieooverj ooourred at the centre of tbe bariow. Here a itrave) waj dug into the rock, northwest by southeast, being eight feet fix inches by six feet, aud three feet ten inches deep. la tbe filling-la of the grave some teeth aud various bJDes of a disturbed hutuau body, with three plfom of urn arid a piece of jut, were found, djubt lefs tbe remains of a primary in'-erumnt dii tnrbed by the digging of the grave for a later burial. At tbe bottom of the grave was the body of a man lying on his left side, at the tontheast aide, with the bead to the south east, the body ooutruted. Ia front of the Lead was a floe pieroed stone axe-hammer, tbe edge of which was touuhing the face, the handle having been held in the right hand. The edge had never been intended for oat tinp, it being carefully squared, more like a modern thin-edge hanomer. The weapon or implement is a splendid example, aud has clearly never been in nse before it was in terred with its owner. Uehtnd the head were a thumb flint and a Hint flake, and there was charooal about the body. Closely adjoiuiDg this grave was another, uoitueast by southwest, the two being united by an exoavated passage two feet wide. Toe fecond grave was six feet by four feet six inches, and a few inches shallower. At the northeast end was the body of a woman, coa tracted, the head . to the northeast, the two burials, therefore, beiDg made facing each Other. Touching the temporal bones ef the ikull were two earrings of peouliar oonjtruo- tion, one on eaoh Bi.de. They were formed of bronze, and had been made thus: A piece of bronze had been beaten ont fiat at oue end, having a circular edge, ihe other end being hammered into a pin. This hai been passed through the lobe of tbe ear, then the flat part rolled back, and the pi a turned into it, When once attaobed, there'ore, the earrings must have remained permanently fixed. Be hind the head of this British lady were two flinty and under the body were remains of wood, as if it had been buried on boards, and then strewed with charcoal. The unbared Skeletons lying within twin graves presented a very carious speotaole. It was generally . agreed that the buiials were those of man and wire. In tbe materials of the mound was a very large number of Hint chippiags, among them being fine examples of a thumb lliut, a drill, and a tool of enigmatical use. Charooal was found throughout the house, bat there were very few potsherds. The second barrow was 70 feet ia diameter and only feet high, formed of earth and ehalk. At 16 feet suuth-southwest of tbe centre, on the natural surface, was thi body . of a man, contracted, ou the right side, with head to west and bauds up to face. Two fnet east of the hip of this body was a child's skull, the other honea, if they had ever biea there, having quite decayed. Touching the face of the child was a very small, chisel-like green stone axe, the cutting edge to the face. Tea feet eoutbeaht of the centre was a hole 2 feet 9 inches deep. In this were charooal and various flints, and near the top a tooth and Some animal's hones. Six ftet northwebt of the centre was the body of a young man, on the left side, head to the east. BtLind the head were a thumb flint and a fine oval-shaped iliit knife. Nine feet west of the centre were part of a human pelvis and various other bones, disturbed by rabbit digging, or perhaps by interment of the body above mentioned. Immediately west of that body, the feet of which extend over it, Was a grave northwest by southeast, 7 feet 10 inches by 7 feet 0' inches, aud 3 feet 8 inches deep. At the east end of the grave was tbe doubled-np body of a young mau, on the left Side, Hands to race aud bead to southeast. This body had beeu enclosed ia wood. About 2 feet above the body was a remarkably fine tavelin-head of flint, 3 inches long, most beautifully chipped. Tiie investigation's are being proceeded with on the Gauton, Slier bum, and Welleiby Wolda. Threatened Famine in IutHn. ; The London Timet contains a letter from Calcutta, under date of September 11, iu which tbe wiittr announces tbe probability of another famine in various parts ot India, owing to the failure of the rice crops. lie says: "Famine once mrpre threatens Northern In dia, eepe.cially.all those provinces to which alone the term lliudostan is correctly applied. There was hardly any hot weather, in the In diau setfe, in May aud Jane last. Again in July and August the heavens were opened with the most disastrous results ia a'l the coast districts, east and west, ou which the monsoon bursts. Orisa was swept; the other districts between Calcutta and the sea are still four feet under water; even more distant Tir hoot was deluged The rioe crops rotted; those sown a second time are now rotting before my eyes. But in Bengal the crop of the year oomes later, as we have too good reason to know since 18(16. On the rainfall this month and half of next depends the fate of the cold season 'crops aud the lives ot thousands. Now, Bengal has already had much more than its whole year's supply. ISo less than seventy-eight inches have fallen at Calcutta, or eleven more than the annual average, against fifty-three in the same time last year. "Nor has Western Iudia escaped the deluge. At this time lat month it iuandated Ouzerat. Ahmedabad, Kalra, Karat, and the other freat old cities there have been desolate 1. 'he news of a calamity which iu L' a rope would have called forth the lameutatlou of nation, in India takes three weeki to travel across the peninsula. Houses have fallen down by tens of thousands, aui lives, both Karnpean and native, have been lost, while railway bridges have been washed away. "At this ninnueut the sixty millions of human beings who live by the land between the Indus on the north, tbe Cbmubol, if not Kfcibudrfa, on the sooth, and tbe Dammoodib, ' la the far east, are prating for rain, iu uio.-ti'ie atd ti-uiple, through vriet and idol. The Lahore and Loodiaua districts of the Punjab have the Baree Dooab Canal or the Indus, but flour (afa) is at ten pound a shilling, and ia the depth of the last famine It rarely reached Seven poand. " Iu Lower Bengal the oropshave guff are I from too much ram, and np iu Behar they are suffering from too little, ttioe, that used to sell at thirty seers for a rupee (thirty pouais a shilling) is selling at twenty, aud going np higher every day. If there should be no rain this month nothing can prevent a famine." The feipsies. A German paper gives ao account of the gipsies in Hungary when they first arrived ia 1417, under the rule of King Siglnmunl, au l quickly adopted, with the imitative epirit of their rare, the manners aud omtoun of the people among whom they settled. Iu Northern Hungary, which is au agricultural coautry inhabited chiellr by Slavonians, tier seldom moved be.voud the bouud of their vitiated; iu Southern Hungary, inhabited by YValUuhUo', German, aud Servian, they led a nomai life. Tbe Ilungariau gipsies are of all varieties of color, from white to a yellowish red, like tint of tbe Indian gipi-ie. There are from thirty to forty tbousaud of them in Hungary proper (excluding Trauvlvania aud Croatia), where they are ohirtly herse dealers, niusl cans, and h!aokumb.s. They have al ways been well treated by the Government, but, notwltbrtaudiiig all tbe elTirts of Maria Theresa aud Joseph. II, they could never be persuaded to bmy tlmmelros with agriculture. Once the Government actually built homes for them, but tbey were never inhabited, tho gipsies pre'erring to sleep in the open air iu it raw huts erected by them selves. Tbe men, though they led a vagi bond life, are on tbe whole tolerably honest; but tbe women aud children are nearly always thieves or b-ggars. Their only hi-ttorioal tra dition is the celebrated defense by ooe thou sand gipsies of tbe fortress of Nagy Ma In 10b7. The gipsies showed extraordinary bravery on this oucafion, keeping the fortress for thiee days against an enemy far more nu merous. At length the assailants began to retreat, upon which, with their usual boast fulness, the gipsies exclaimed that their vic tory would have been more complete if they had not used all their powder. The enemy, hearing this, of course returned to the assault, took the fortress, and killed the gipsy gar rifcon to a man. Hobbles. Nolhln?, observes a Icrelgu writer, sweetens life eo much en a hobby.
