TITE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPnPglLAbELrm A, WEDNESDAY, JffNE 19, 1807. HEW POEM BY JOHN G. W1IITT1ER. John O. Whltticr contributes to the Julj number of the Atiantin Monthly a poem entitled FREEDOM IN BRAZIL. With clearer light, Cross of the South, ghine forth In blue ItrAKillftn skies; And thou, Oh! river ! cleaving half the earth From fcunet to sunrise, From the treat mountains to the Atlantic wave Thy joy's long anthem pour. Yet a tew da j s (Hod make them lets I) and Maves Shall thame thv prtle no more." No fettered feet thy shaded inarqlnB press; But all men ahull walk free Whie thon. the high priet of the wllilernens,' Haet wedded sea to sea. , And thou, irreat-hcarted Ruler, through whose mouth The word of Ood Is eaid Once more, "Let there be light!" Son of the South, Lilt up thy honored head, Wear, unr-hamed, a crown by thy desert More than by birth thy own, Careless of watch and ward; thou art begirt By grateful hearts atone. The moated wall and battle-ship may tall. But sate shall justice prove; Stronger than greaves of bra?s or Iron mail The panoply of love. Crowned doubly by man's blessing and God's, grace. . Thy future la secure; Who frees a people makes his statue's place In time's Valhalla sure. Lo 1 from his Neva's banks the Scythian Czar Stretches to thee his band, Who, with the pencil ot the Northern star, Wrote freedom on bis land. And bo whose Bravo is holy by our calm And prairied bantam on. From his gaunt hand shall drop the martyr's palm To greet thee with ''Well done I" And thou, O Earth ! with .smiles; thy face make sweet, And let thy wall be stilled, To hear the Muse of Prophecy repeat Her promise half fulfilled. The voice that spake at Nazareth speaks still, Mo sound thereof hath died; Alike thy hope and Heaven's eternal will Shall yet bo satisfied, The years are slow, the vision tarrlelh long, And lar the end may be; But one by ote, the fiends of ancient wrong Go out and leave thee free. Important Mining Operations. At Coton Park,' a few miles from Gresley, England, a wealthy company la now sinking for coal at a point away from any coal-field, and the geo logical maps show that there is none in the neighborhood.
