FlBE AT Til K NEW ClIESNUT STREET TlIK- atbe A Man Badly Burned. About one o'clock yesterday attcrnoon considerable excite ment was created on the crowded streets by the ringing of the tire bells, and the announcement that the New Chesnut Street Theatre was on tire. Hundieds of persons ran in the direction of Twellih and Chesnut streets, and in a few minutes steamers were at work in different streets in tbe locality of tke theatre, torcLatr water to the sccdp of the tire. At one time it was thought the theatre wa doomed to destruction. Dense masses ot smoKo poured out of tiio doors und window, and tue interior was so tilled with it that it wa almost impossible to remain within the walls for any length of time. Iloe was carried into the building by the Chesnut street door, but no hre could be seen, and it was soon made known that the flumes were confined to the rear part of ue theatie, under fhe stage. It appeared on inquiry that Mr. James Price. the Bus-titter of the estuolithiueiit, had gone into the cellar for the purpose ot turning on the gas in readiness for the matinee which was to have taken place, and just as he was aouut returning i)stairs tbe meter exploded with a lomt noise, and set hre to the meter-room, besides burning Mr. Price in a very serious and painful mauner about the face aud bauds. Nuiwithft Hiding his injuries, Mr. Price, wrtu commendable pre sence of mind, did his best to extinguish the names, but was forced to beat a hasty retreat. The hre communicated to the woodwork of the meter-room and th engine-room which adjoins it. and but lor the prompt action of the attaches of the establishment and the Bremen, a serious conflagration would have ensued. As it . was, the Humes did not get peyond the locality mentioned. A number of hro coinpa nie were about pouring streams of w ater iuto the auditorium ol the building, but were pre vented mainly through the exertions of Mnna cer Sinn, who understood the situation of tbe fire, and thus prevented great damage by water Though the room was almost instautly in a blaze, tbe woodwoik all on fire, aud Mr. Price badly burned about the bands and face, ho instantly, with great presence of mind and rommeudable bravery, turnol the gas oil' it', the meter, and then attempted to get water on the tire through the hose connected with the Hlrfblihment: but beloi-e siice.'ediii:? in Hut, rtvtrtt.) ot f ho hie ruiupuitii.'s reached the rjund ami 'ooa pot into mtvhc. Mi P.-ieo fion went tot'ie front part of the ho.isc, aud tunic I off the mi at Vac ctrel cormecion. EviUs timo th" pain Irom bis turned hand and t.ice had become so great toit he had to bu taken to Ha hospital. The Binge, green-room, 'orchestra, and otiicr apsrtnients were flooded with water, and some of the scenery which was to have been used in the play ot Hcnrif&c during the matinee was in lured, but the scenery ami appointment of ihe Long ttrike remain intact. Tbe p'.T'prm.ince went on as usual lat evening, and 07' to-nigf:t there will be no traco of tun (ire. The entire los of tii c management by tire and w.iter will be about $ 1000.
