Sperry, Secretary of the National Union Committee, who joined the members at the Astor House meeting, makes a statement concerning the split in that body. He says: According to the votes of the Committee re corded on the books, the "headquarters" of the Committee and the place of the meetings were fixed at the "Astor House," New York city. All meetings of the Committee, special or otherwise, have been called by the Chairman Hiid Secrctury, unless otherwise fixed by ad journment. According to the record ot the Committee, the meeting should have been held in New York. Neither had the "four" who called the Philadelphia meeting (one of whom, by-the-way, has since withdrawn from the Com mittee) any right to call a meeting under tho circumstances, lor that duty belonged to the. Chairman and Secretary. Aud here let me say that neii her the Chairman nor the Secretary had been called upon to nive notice of a meeting ot the Committee, consequently they could not have refused. Alter the irregular call ot the "four" members ol the committee at an unauthorized place, namely, Philadelphia, its 1 have plainly sho.vn by the votes to be such, 1 consulted with the Chairman of the Committee, and it was agreed that if there was to be a meeting it should be a legal one in every sense. Consequently a "call" was Issued for a meeting of the Conimitte in a legal manner, and at its "headquarters," as designated by its own vote. Inasmuch as the "lour" who had called the Philadelphia meeting hud fixed Monday, the Ud instant, as a time con venient for them to attend, we fixed the meeting at the Astor House at the same time in a spirit of accommodation. In accordance with the above mentioned "calls,"' fifteen, met tit Philadelphia under the informal call, and cieht in New York uudcr tho leL'al or tormal call. There being no quorum present, the New York meeting voted to adjourn, the time ol the next meeting to be agreed upon by the Executive Committee (a minority of whom were present tit the New York meeting); aud that two weeks' uotice should be given, so that there might not be tiny excuse lor a quorum not being present. But the Philadelphia por tion of the Committee votd to transact their business, in violation of the rules established by their own votes, without a quorum, ontv ti'iteen of fhe forty members being present; thus following the extreme radical usa?e of overriding any constitutional or legal barrier to a proposed course of action which seems likely to promote their success; while at ths hame time they pass solemn judgment upon three of their fc!l'ow-niember, and sentence them to expul sion from the Committee, without even a hear ing or catechizing them upon their views ou that standard ot Union orthodoxy, the platform adopted at Baltimote at the time the Committee vcie chosen. I know not what rule of action, or principle, could have governed their coun sels, except it be that fanaticism never reasons. With the above facts I leave the matter to an imj artiul public, assuring them that, nonvith Ftanoing the action of a minority of the Com mittee, I am. as ever, sound on the principles of the Contention whicn made me a member of the ' National Union Committee." Very respectfully, N. D. Sperrv, Secretary f National Union Committee. HIE PRESIDENT AND SECRETARY OF STATE. At Elyria, Ohio, the Presidential party had a brief village reoopii n. The following, which i found in a report published in the Chicago 'Jliiifs, requires no comment: One tiignllicaut individual, with a radical idea ol' hospitality, p-roaned. "You will groan worse inan that," said the President, "lor tne agonies of the dammca are heavy." Mr. Howard Tell a Story.) Mr. Seward advanced and said he had not time to make a speech, but he would tell them a story. "There are two sections in this coun trythe North and the South. The North is all right, isn't it? (Cries of "ies." Now I'll tell j ou about the South : 'There was a matt in our towu, And tie was wondrous w ise, He jumped into a bramble bush And scratched out both his eye.' "Tbat.s the South; but the t-toro goes ou: " 'When he saw his eyos were out, With all his might and main. He jumped into another bash Ana scraicneu mem iu again.' 'Now, we are going to help the South to scratch them in again." (Loud cheers and laughter.) One day last year, wmte wanting in las gunicn, ill. a., to amuse his children, uluuled his walking stick (which had a gill knob to it).in one of the flower beds.
